Kojima: MGS: Peace Walker HD is 60FPS

Remake gets frame rate boost.

Hideo Kojima has said the high definition remake of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker will run at 60 frames per second.

Tweets by the game developer legend, translated and compiled by Andriasang, suggest the PlayStation Portable game has received a lovely frame rate boost.

"60 frames per second in HD… it's the best! Say peace!" he said in one Tweet accompanied by images of Peace Walker.

The HD Peace Walker is set for release alongside Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater HD as part of a Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, due out this year on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is being crafted by Bluepoint, the developer behind the excellent God of War Collection. MGS3 runs at 60 frames per second, Kojima said last month.

Overnight, Kojima they'd originally tried to make the PS2 version of MGS3 60 frames per second, but the collision detection and jungle visuals were too intensive, so they had to keep it at 30.

    60fps: the new 3D.
  • uiruki #2 10 months ago

    Excellent. I was worried when that video came out and it was still at 20.

    60fps... nice! Great to see a developer with the correct priorities :)

    I own MGS:pW on PSP but never played it very far since I could not get used to the controls, so I'm really looking forward to this on PS3 with a propper controller and two sticks.

    Will I be able to transfer my PSP save data to my PS3? I have Peace Walker but stopped playing after a while because of the controls. It's a good game, I'd like to finish it but I don't want to start all over again.

    Yeah that video which was released didn't exactly fill me with confidence.

    Now I have lead again in my pencil.

    Thank you Kojima-San.

    I've been wanting MGS 3 running at 60 fps with slightly better graphics for years. This HD collection has made my dream come true. Would of been nice if MGS 3 got a complete remake, but this will definitely do.
  • Eurolamer #8 10 months ago

    Top news. MGS just works a lot better for in 60fps IMO, one of the reasons I got so much out of MGS2.
  • kinky_mong #9 10 months ago

    I'm confused, yesterday everyone was saying Battlefield 3 was going to be better for running at 30fps, now everyone is cheering Peace Walker for running at 60fps?!?! WHICH IS BETTER?! I NEED TO KNOW?!

    "Overnight, Kojima they'd originally tried to make the PS2 version of MGS3 60 frames per second..."

    Uh, this sentence makes no sense... I'm guessing they mean when it was originally being developed?
  • arcam #11 10 months ago

    @kinky_mong

    It's really not confusing. 60FPS is better than 30FPS, almost always, but most people agreed that Battlefield's graphics and gameplay were more than enough to justify its framerate.

    Texture quality, models and other effects will be kept fairly simple if the framerate is getting a boost. And judging the sample video above, that looks to be the case.

    Looks like a GameCube game running upscaled on the Dolphin PC emulator.

    It's always been a fairly slow moving game anyway.

    Oooh - 360 version! I'll be keen to check the face-off, as I'd be after the XBL and 360 control pad , tbh!

    @ryze

    I really don't think controller preference should sway your decision as to which platform to buy this for, like all of Kojima's recent output you'll barely use a controller during this interactive movie.

    Hang on did Peace walker actually come out?

    Edit: Ah it was PSP

    Does anybody know if Peace Walker HD will have online play on PS3/360 over PSN/Live?
  • CamberGreber #17 10 months ago

    @Madeinbeats

    DONT USE the word UPSCALLED its a four letter word.

    Dolphin runs its games in NATIVE Res set by the User. (In my case 1080p)

    For reference Upscalled means stretched not actual Resolution.

    Upscalled is a Marketing Term.
  • madeinbeats #18 10 months ago

    @CamberGreber

    Was your anger upscaled then or is it native?

    LOL, my mistake, I was referring to the res being 'scaled up' from the one natively seen when playing on the GameCube. That OK for ya or are you still going to report me to the upscale police?
  • sfp_noodle #19 10 months ago

    @Ryze

    These are ports of old PS2 games, I really can't see there being any difference whatsoever between the two versions other than the 360 one will come on at least 2 discs and the PS3 version will feature the trasfarring system.

    Apart from Twin Snakes I've played every single MGS games on a PlayStation console so not changing that now. Will be getting this on PS3 and then probably pick it up on the 360 sometime next year for the extra achievements.

    @Madeinbeats

    Upscale Police here. Just Kidding

    Sorry I did not mean to Sound mad. I was not trying to call any one out.

    My real anger is at big buisness that markets these terms to consumers causeing mistrust in everything from framrate, Resoultions, and and fake 3d (2d to 3d conversion).

    They are polluting the public market causing the stagnation and adoption of Real Technology.

    Ps. I have a friend who went out and spent a large chunk of money on one of those DVD upconverters and swears by it.
    Only to be shocked when he finds out that the superior dvd image created by 360s dvd player only runs at a maximum of 480p.
  • TudeScud #21 10 months ago

    @CamberGreber While the marketing terms of various display technologies may be confusing, they are in most cases, not just marketing terms. They're real differences in television set specifications, whether they're between make, model or year. The technical descriptions are the issue people have coming to terms with, and thus branding such as TrueHD occurs. If those terms were designed to confuse, how successful do you imagine the marketer using them would be?

    Btw, it's likely your friend's DVD player is using outdated 'upscaling' or 'upconverting' (the process where the lower resolution frame is set into a frame buffer where software -- provided by an onboard chip -- fills in the previously nonexistent pixels) technology. A newer or more expensive version may in fact provide an upscaled picture that looks better than the DVD's actual contents. YMMV could apply either way.

    Very true about the discs - I'd rather a single disc, but I'll see how they turn out.

    I've been abandoning my XBL account a little recently, and have started getting back onto it with some of my latest games.

    I'd probably want to up my gamerscore with this if I'm gonna play it for hours on end.
  • CamberGreber #23 10 months ago

    @TudeScud

    I do agree that some Upscalling Algorithoms produce better images than others.
    But I think any amount of image processing is bad.
