UK Top 40: Zumba beats Zelda

Child of Eden enters in 25th.

Resurgent dance regime Zumba Fitness has leapt back to the top of the UK gaming chart.

Nintendo's Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake for 3DS surfaced in second. It's the highest placing yet for a 3DS exclusive - around 20 per cent of UK 3DS owners picked up the game.

This leaves Duke Nukem Forever, last week's number one, in third.

The chart's second-highest new entry? Square Enix role-player Dungeon Siege III. It dug in for ninth place and beat fellow newcomer Alice: Madness Returns, which managed 13th.

Snazzy on-rails rhythm shooter Child of Eden was the week's other new game. Despite gorgeous graphics and a prestigious pedigree (coming from Rez creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi) it could only muster a placing in 25th.

L.A. Noire shuffles down to fourth, while a continued strong showing for Brink sees the Splash Damage shooter move back up the table into fifth.

Lego Pirates, Dirt 3 and inFamous 2 make up sixth, seventh and eighth respectively, with FIFA 11 completing the top ten.

On its original Christmas 1998 launch, Ocarina of Time for the N64 stormed to first place with a record-breaking 100,000 first week sales. Ocarina 3D isn't doing shabbily either - total sales have almost equalled current 3DS top-seller Pilotwings Resort, out since launch week.

Child of Eden is a cracking game and really is a fantastic experience when played with Kinect

I believe some people are not willing to buy child of eden for full price because you can finish it in 3,maybe 4 hours.I know that's my reason anyway.
And i loved REZ.I will buy it when it's around half price.

Neg me but I don't care. Good for child of Eden, shouldn't have tried to burn over people that's also interested in the game.

Brinks down to £25 in game as is Crysis 2 so im not surprised its selling they seem to be pushing it fairly hard, i picked up a copy from shopto, for £20 with my discount, and for £20 im fairly happy with it, graphics arent very nice with jaggies everywhere once you get passed the cut scenes and into the game, but at least the framerate is stable. (PS3 version)

I bought Green Lantern yesterday. Kinda upset that I payed 40 pounds for it and Zavvi is selling for 28, but I'll get over it after lunch time I guess. Didn't get Child of Eden, I played at a friends is too hard, going to stick to Fitness Evolved which is awesome.
  • Cronan #10 11 months ago

I'm renting Child of Eden, not sure I want to pay that much for a three hour game. It should have been a downloadable title.

I'll put Eden on my wish list. In the meantime, I've just been getting the King of the Gorons to dance to my tune. I'd forgot how wonderful OoT is.

Child of Eden is fabulous. Its classic old school gaming in a amazing setting. Brings me back to Matix (gridrunner II) on the old C64.

Exactly why MS are right not to focus on so called 'core' gamers when it comes to kinect. I'll get it on PS3 when it's cheaper.
  • cowell #15 11 months ago

So its taken Zelda one week to sell almost as many as the top game took 12. Speaks volumes for the quality of the product and the ongoing demand from consumers for the Nintendo mainstays (Zelda, Mario etc) above all else.

Shame Child of Eden didnt do better but I'm not surprised. It's quite abstract and the Rez connection really only resonates with quite a small segment of the market these days. I suspect it'll find it's feet at a lower price and be quite a steady seller

Gonna pick up Child of Eden this week.
  • berelain #17 11 months ago

@Miiiiguel - why on earth would you ever consider paying £40 for Green Lantern?

In other news, Child of Eden is AMAZING. I'm in love.
  • miiiguel #18 11 months ago

Yes, because it'll top the charts when it comes on PS3. PS3 users are completly diferent, it's like they're a diferent, more evolved race, they don't do mainstream, they watch Danish movies and listen to Diamanda Galas.

@ berelain : Amazon didn't have it (only through other sellers), and was half asleep at 3am. Very stupid thing to do.

I'll buy Child of Eden, but I'm still not sure if I should buy a Kinect with it. Probably should...
  • Ceatlan #20 11 months ago

I think Child Of Eden was crying out to be a live arcade game, and not a full boxed release. I know myself and 3 of my Kinect owning friends had all kind of assumed thats what it was going to be, and were shocked last week to realise if was a £40.00 retail boxed release.

800 or even 1200 point live arcade download an it would have been instant purchase for all 3 or us. At retail we'll wait until it's in the second hand bins (unlikely given low numbers sold), or discounted.
  • BloodSaint #21 11 months ago

I think Alice: Madness Returns and Child of Eden should be higher up the list... They both have excellent and unique art styles with enjoyable gameplay
  • wayn3h #22 11 months ago

Bought Child of Eden and am loving it! But like others have said, can't help feeling I paid a tad too much for it.

Oh well, if it helps spur on more off the wall games like this then I don't mind!
  • Eraysor #23 11 months ago

As much as I enjoyed Rez, £40 is far, far too much for a rail shooter.
  • King_Edward #24 11 months ago

    Stick in there Duke.
  • kinky_mong #25 11 months ago

The British buying public really are cretins aren't they? The greatest game of all time gets beaten by a fucking fitness game, a broken ugly piece of shit manages to climb back into the top 5, and Child of Eden only manages 25th. A real sorry state of affairs.

  • Smoped #26 11 months ago

So Duke seems to be pretty much unaffected by the dismal reviews. I guess Pitchford was right when he said review scores don't matter as much with Duke.
  • Darren #27 11 months ago

I'm surprised that Dungeon Siege III and Alice: Madness Returns didn't chart higher, being as they are multiformat. Oh well, both are terrific games regardless.

Not surprised at the Child of Eden placing though; given its reported shortness as a full-priced release. I feel it might have fared better as a £10-£15 downloadable PSN/XBLA title where even I might have been tempted to buy it. It would also have had a trial demo available too for people to try.
  • Tinrib72 #28 11 months ago

I was surprised that Child of Eden is a boxed product and not download....also at £39.99 when I walked into GAME over the weekend. Fuck that! I do really want it....but £40. No ta.

Will wait for the inevitable price drop. What were they (the deciders of such things) thinking about?
  • TopKatt #29 11 months ago

I wonder if the Kinect connection has maybe hurt Child of Edens sales at all? Obviously for those with Kinect it's a bonus but for those who don't own Kinect and haven't read all the reviews, and therefore don't know how well it plays with a controller, could the "Better With Kinect" be a bit off putting?
  • HyperTails #30 11 months ago

Alice: Madness Returns at 13? Yet Zumba Fitness is at no 1?

    *Facepalm*

Yeah, no wonder nobody tries to be different these days. Except for Splash Damage... Brink at 5th is a disgrace though. Innovations all well and good, but when said innovation is broken and has to be patched back together, that game shouldn't sell.
  • d00dl #31 11 months ago

I'm a bit saddened by some of the comments here. Child of Eden will definintely be an imminent purchase for me. Myself and daughter were quite mesmerized watching (AND hearing) it in action. It is absolutely sublime. As for the short gameplay, did people who bought shoot-em-ups on previous gen consoles for full price feel burned?

I remember when I bought virtua cop 2 and panzer dragoon for the saturn full price. When the play through didn't last very long for either I was so disappointed, I was 17 at the time and worked night-shifts as a labourer to help my family ought and allow me to buy things I wanted. It wasn't until after I resigned myself to playing through them repeatedly that I found the real value of these kinds of games.

I happily parted with cash for Rez and it was an amazing experience, I have no doubt that Child of Eden will bring me and my child far more than 4 hours of pure enjoyment. I would urge any of you concerned with the short play through time to look past that and not miss out on what surely is a real, meaningful, reason to own a Kinect (along with Kinect Googly Eyes!) :D
  • HyperTails #32 11 months ago

Child of Eden is only on Xbox 360 though, limiting its customer base. And going on the type of game it is, its very niche, limiting it even further. Even though it tries to be different, it was always going to be an overlooked title because of what it is. Like Rez was.

Heard its good though, so it probably deserved to do better.

Oh, and I know i'm going to get people's feathers ruffled here, but I have to get it off my chest. Ocarina of Time should NOT be no 2. It shouldn't even be in the top 10, even though its a favourite of mine. Why? Because its an N64 game! This... a port of a years old game, sitting at no 2, is the equivalent of 'generic military FPS no 65' sitting there as well. Its not new. Its not innovative. Its a rehash. Sorry, but it is. Modern, fresh games should be doing well. Zelda maybe great, but its just done what people criticise FPS games for.
  • TechnicPuppet #33 11 months ago

I love how Child of Eden gets shorter every time someone mentions how long it lasts. By next week it will exist in a state of timelessnes enabling you to finish the game the exact same time as you started it.
  • cowell #34 11 months ago

I'm with Guillotine on this. I sure wish it did better, I'm all for innovation but I understand WHY it didn't sell well.

I wasn't really aware that you could play it without Kinect. I consider my tastes fairly varied and its not all about judging a game on the number of hours it takes for one play through, but £40 seems a bit much even so. It's also a time issue for me. I have other games to finish first. It might get on my radar at a lower price and or if i buy a Kinect.
  • Widge #35 11 months ago

It's also had no marketing whatsoever really.
  • God_Octo #36 11 months ago

Hold in there Infamous 2! I've been a bad man, not having bought you yet, but don't worry. I'll make it up to you with dinner and a dance. And then playing the shit out of you.
  • memeroot #37 11 months ago

Child of Eden and la noir ordered

loving duke - dont understand reviews - mw x sucked ass
  • HyperTails #38 11 months ago

I loved Duke as well. Yeah, a bit dated, but when did that stop a game being fun? All those conservative minded 'critics' (esp Kotaku with its hundred whining articles on Duke) didn't seem as open minded as they like to act with regards to the humour. I'm glad its done well, and look forward to the next one.

Alice: Madness Returns deserved to be no.1, instead of failing to break into what is a very shitty top 10.
  • Jay1983 #39 11 months ago

Not bad. Zelda makes number 2 after only 2 days of sales.
Would have been an easy number 1 if it had a full week.
    Next week most likely.
  • HyperTails #40 11 months ago

    "Next week most likely"

Sad thing is, it probably will be.
  • Progguitarist #41 11 months ago

    @HyperTails

I take it you own a 3ds and have bought and played Ocarina 3d?
  • HyperTails #43 11 months ago

    @TheEarlofZinger

Why would I want to, when I already have Ocarina of Time?
  • TheEarlOfZinger #44 11 months ago

Big graphical overhaul, in 3D, can play it anywhere, touch screen menu is a JOY...I could go on.

Not sure how you can judge it unless you have the new version?! which you clearly don't. There's a couple of generations that haven't played it, and for people that have it's a pretty major update.

It more than deserves to be at no.2
  • HyperTails #45 11 months ago

    @Earl

Its the N64 game with 3DS features, correct? I know its an epic game... its in my top 10. However, I don't think that it should be number 2, or even in the top 10. People go on, and on (and rightly so), about fresh games not selling, or hitting the top 10. Whether that be new IP's, or an innovative sequel. This top 10 is, by and large, crap. Why is Zumba at no.1, and Alice: Madness Returns is at 13? That just sums up how gaming is going now. Zumba shouldn't be up there, even in the top 20. But it is. Now when a military FPS (COD or its clones) break the top 10, people complain that it shouldn't be there. And it shouldn't, if its there at the expense of an innovative, fresh game. What Nintendo have done here is take Ocarina of Time (as great as it is), and re-released it with 3DS features and a few tweaks here and there to make it look better. And Alice: Madness Returns isn't in the top 10. Nintendo seem to get away with re-releases because 'their Nintendo', but if anyone else (Sony) had a re-release at 2 then people would whine and complain. They complain that FPS sequels do so well with their sequels, but if a Nintendo port (and its not the first, or the last to come) comes out its 'worth of its place'. I hope nobody compains when Modern Warfare 3 hits no.1 and holds it for weeks because they'll be compaining about what they were praising a few months back.

    You see what i'm saying?

And yes, Alice: Madness Returns did deserve to be no.1.
  • charliemouse #46 11 months ago

Child of Eden has already given my a whole weeeknd of play. Yes, I've unlocked all the levels, but it's by no means over.

    Hello leaderboards, goodbye life.

It'd be a huge game to fit down a pipe and on a HDD, all those sparkles and thumping basslines take up space. Simply beautiful.

  • TheEarlOfZinger #49 11 months ago

I do, but you simply have to play it - exploring the fresh hyrule in 3d with the touchscreen menu is just fantastic...it's breathes new life into an already great game. The whole package just reeks of quality, hence in my opinion it deserves to be at no.2.

Absolute shite goes to no.1 in the music charts, it's just the way it is - no different with games. People do not have the same tastes as you - Which is surely a good thing, no? Because right now you'd probably zhumba-ing on down in your living room. Or whatever the fuck happens, I have no idea.

Well I did my part. Child of Eden was waiting for me when I got back on Friday, and while I wasn't planning to buy Zelda 3D I broke on the way home.

Child of Eden has been marvellous though. It feels like I'm conducting a dream, although highlights the fact that my TV isn't nearly as big as it should be.
  • lolercopter #51 11 months ago

In Child of Eden's defence, it only came out on Friday. I'm hoping next week will be better for the game even though the rational me knows it will bomb nonetheless. Sad :(
  • spudsbuckley #52 11 months ago

Zelda only came out on Friday as well and the 3DS has a smaller userbase than the 360.

I said it in the comments on the last "EG Game of the Week" article, no one will remember Child of Eden in a couple of weeks. I'll be genuinely surprised if it makes the top 40 next week. It's a trippy version of Space Harrier that should have been released on XBLA.
  • Raz76 #53 11 months ago

    @spud
Your painfully obvious trolling of Child of Eden articles doesn't get more clever by being repeated.
  • lolercopter #54 11 months ago

@spudsbuckley - Child of Eden is a 25 year old brand recognized by pretty much anyone who plays games. It is also widely regarded as "best game ever" and highly anticipated by pretty much anyone who bought a 3DS. Hold on, I got something wrong...
  • GreyBeard #55 11 months ago

Child Of Eden was always going to be a niche title, with sales to match. That's not a slight to its quality, just a statement of fact.

What's more interesting to me is that in spite of the horrendous reviews Duke is actually selling very well, particularly on 360 despite it being the worst performing version of the game.
  • spudsbuckley #56 11 months ago

    @#60

That argument falls flat when you have Brink in the top ten.
    Edited by spudsbuckley at 20/06/11 @ 15:14
  • LudusSolers #57 11 months ago

    @Hypertails

It's a bit of a spurious argument; no one will complain if the Team Ico Collection charts at 2 or (more deservedly) 1. Rightfully so, because even though it's exactly the same games with - let's face it - non-essential extras, there are an entire generation of gamers who won't have played it.

I really don't understand why people complain about remakes/re-cut editions of games; no one denigrates Coppola for re-releasing Apocalypse Now
  • HyperTails #58 11 months ago

    @LudosSolers

Actually, they would. I've already seen people on various websites saying that the PS2 ports on PS3 are out of hand, and as its Sony, people would find a way to whine anyway.

Besides, Nintendo seem to have become the masters of porting. I'd not of minded too much about Ocarina if Alice: Madness Returns would've even hit the top 10. As it is, a crappy fitness game, N64 port, broken FPS, Lego, out of date football games, generic military FPS from talentless Treyarch, and a crappy futuristic FPS have outsold it, and that's not right. People scream for fresh ideas, and then said fresh ideas get ignored (like Ninja Theory games). Alice deserved a much, much higher position. And from now on its just going to sink lower... and that 'aint right. Don't misunderstand... i'm not saying that I wanted Ocarina of Time to bomb. I don't. Its a personal favourite of mine, but its a port. And ports taking up space are just as bad as FPS sequels, because they do the exact same thing, and that's take sales away from games that thoroughly deserve to do well. And Alice deserves to do well.
  • darc #59 11 months ago

Agree that Child of Eden would have done better as a dowloadable title, at whatever price point. But moreso, it REALLY NEEDS a demo for those of us who are very interested but are basically scratching our heads over the gameplay itself.

$50 is a lot to ask when my primary response is "Whaa?"

"Zelda confirmed for me that I get nausea from the 3D. I couldn't play for more than 5 minutes straight without feeling uncomfortable."

This game makes me uncomfortable, too, although I'm a big fan of 3D gaming in general. For one thing the 3D adds weird artifacts in the middle of textures (i.e. not just on polygon edges as is typical) which are unpleasant on the eye. But more than that, the viewing angle requirements make *holding* the 3DS really uncomfortable for me. 20 minutes of play and my occasional arthritis/tendonitis advances 20 years. Decent game in 2D, but then yah, its a bit of a letdown for the 3DS.

What? I can't believe this. In Japan Little Battlers Experience was on the top spot. Now in Europe, again Zelda wasn't number 1? i just wonder which version is selling more. Zumba wii or the Xbox version. I thought Zumba was compatible with the PS move too?
