New Xbox will be at E3 2012 – report

Crytek readying Timesplitters 4 for it.

The Xbox 360's successor will likely debut at E3 2012, with Timesplitters 4 among the titles in development for the new machine, according to a new report.

A "high-ranking" source within developer Crytek let the news slip to VideoGamer. Although the insider didn't confirm system specs, they revealed that the Crysis studio is using DirectX 11 in development.

The source expects Microsoft to unveil and subsequently launch its new machine ahead of Sony, though the studio is also investing resources in PlayStation 4 development.

Crytek is hoping that Timesplitters 4 will be seen as an early visual benchmark for the platform.

First announced by developer Free Radical back in 2007, the FPS sequel was thought to be dead and buried when the studio went into administration in 2009. However, Crytek, who bought up what was left of the Nottingham-based outfit, has seemingly resuscitated the game.

Built using CryEngine 3, it'll apparently focus on branching paths, exploration and sandbox gameplay.

Both Microsoft and Crytek have declined to comment on the story.

I think I'm more excited about another Timesplitters than I am about a new console.

Pleeeeeease be based around the goodness that was TS2 and not TS Future Perfect.

Also, let the gamerscores stay! As much as I hate being an addict. I wouldnt be happy if they made peeps start again!
  • dadrester #5 11 months ago

As long as it has the player select animations from the first game it'll be a winner!
  • RawNinjaKid #6 11 months ago

yep, this time next year we will be ready. I am surprised MSFT didn't show off or mention it this year to be honest. I thought they would at least talk about "next-gen" tools. I remember Sony doing that in 2004, I think.

  • MDL199 #7 11 months ago

Do we really need the next gen just yet when the 360 and PS3 are delivering such fantastic looking games?

I know in face off's PC versions of games are always superior to the console versions but from watching the video's I would say not massively so.

A lot of people took a long while to leave their PS2's behind and jump to the PS3 and 360 as early games weren't a dramatic improvement especially as very few people had high definition tv's and I think take up of a new Xbox and PS4 could take longer still unless the graphical jump get's a lot steeper.

Since they now own the tech I think it would be more suprising if there wasnt full BC miguel, specially as they sold much more games on the 360 compared to the original.

I don't want another Xbox for at least another 10 years.
BUT...if we have to have one please make it fully backwards compatible & allow us to use our same Achievements account so we can build on our exisiting ones.
  • woodnotes #15 11 months ago

I think Xbox 720 will launch without any kind of Kinect sensor etc - I think they'll keep the 360+Kinect going parallel with the new console, which will initially be aimed at the core market. A bit like they've done with the 360 really!
  • miiiguel #16 11 months ago

Also, let the gamerscores stay! As much as I hate being an addict. I wouldnt be happy if they made peeps start again!

Of course it'll stay, Achievements is not a 360 thing anymore, it's a Live thing, it's on Games for Windows and most important WP7. It'd make no sense to reset GamerScore of WP7 users just because a new console spawned.

  • Cronan #20 11 months ago

If this is true, we can expect the new console to be a "Holiday 2013" release, which sounds about right.
  • Collymilad #21 11 months ago

    Sweet.

Late 2013 would be pretty much perfect for me.

As others have said, full BC please. Also, some way to keep and play your downloaded games on the new consoles would be good too. I won't hold out much hope for that bit though.
  • God_Octo #22 11 months ago

This doesn't sound anything like a Timesplitters game at all. I want to know about the Monkeys, gingerbread men and flaming Snowmen!

Murby, they'd never take gamerscore or achievements away, never in a million years. All your accounts stuff from 360 will cross over to the new one I bet too, XBL is bigger than the 360 these days with it on PC and Phones.

It be interesting to see the next gen controller for the new Xbox! I think Kinect will feature as standard and maybe a few more motion devices as well.

And I think Nintendo can release the Wii U as powerful as a Playstation 3.5 at the most. It's gotta to be more powerful than what we have now.

  • oupe #36 11 months ago

But will it feature a controller with a built-in display?

Curse this industry! We've just got through one major event's worth of announcements that are months or years away from fruition - and now we have speculation for what the next announcements might be next year.

Only so much forward-thinking I can take! I want stuff and I want it now.
  • MARKIV #40 11 months ago

So November ( or September ) 2012 then.? Is it worth investing in Kinect for 16 months use?
  • steviepunk #41 11 months ago

@MDL199, If you think the PC version don't look that different, that will probably be due to you watching a scaled down video - the benefits of resolution will not be apparent once scaled down. Unless you are watching a full 1080p video, encoded losslessly then you'll never see the full difference.

As it is, most 360 and PS3 games barely run at true 720p resolution, most will be narrower and scaled out. As for games running at a true 1080p for rendering, well I suspect you wouldn't run out of fingers if you tried to count them...

Also, many console games maintain their visual quality by running at 30fps.
Modern gaming PCs will easily run at a native 1080p at 60fps at better image quality than their console counter parts (not counting that it will also have higher resolution textures)

With the push on 3D that Sony are making (and Microsoft no doubt will with their next console), then you'd really be wanting to achieve 1080p rendering at 120fps

As for the next Xbox (and PS), so long as they are fully backwards compatible (ie. I can run all my existing games and downloaded content) then it will be a no brainer upgrading, but if they are not, then I don't think I'd drop the money for a new console if there are only going to be a couple of games that I can play on it.

@MARKIV, if the new xbox is backward compatible, then you'll probably be able to plug in the Kinect sensor bar - it only requires a USB connection (I think)
  • jablonski #45 11 months ago

    "And so it begins."

That must be the most overused phrase on Eurogamer comments.
  • Darren #46 11 months ago

If the new Xbox debuts at E3 2012 then hopefully that'll mean a late 2012/early 2013 launch then. It can't come soon enough IMO, not only as a successor to the ageing (and by then ancient!) Xbox 360 but also because PC developers can finally ditch the archaic DX9 in favour of DX11 for all multiformat games.
  • Yuroko #47 11 months ago

Suppose I'll start chucking an extra tenner in the new console fund every month then.
  • Adi-C #48 11 months ago

At last. With late 2013 launch they could pull out 22nm gpu, as well as cpu in 22nm easily, maybe even in 16. Hardware like this would pack some serious processing power, easily enough for a true next gen console.

    Yipee!!! About time Microsoft.

So it'll be out a year after the WiiU. It's gonna make that machine look pretty poor, we can all be sure of that.
  • metallicorphan #50 11 months ago

what's really freaky is that the 360 was out in 2005(that's not the freaky part),so if the new machine is launched in 2013 and lasts as long as the 360,then it could be at least 2020 that we could see the Xbox after that(okay, that's the freaky part, start freaking!!)
  • Anciegher #51 11 months ago

MS are crap with hardware. They should just let Sony make the hardware, and do the software for Sony. Call it a PSBox or something...
  • Kano-11 #54 11 months ago

Microsoft will still talk big and act like their only focusing on the 360 and kinect but in reality all their resources will be ploughed into the new system. Nintendo are doing the same about now - Skyward sword is about the only big exclusive left on the roster for the wii and me thinks halo 4 will be the 360's last swan song.
Kinect was just a cynical attempt to breath a couple more years in the 360, I think MS will ditch it as soon as the next console is released.
  • darc #55 11 months ago

Personally, I think it's a little early for the next PS and XBox. I think Nintendo threw a wrench in the works by introducing the Wii with underpowered graphics when the PS3 and 360 were released. It was a brilliant strategy for them, of course, but now the inevitable Wii U forces Sony's and MS's hands.

The fact is that PS3 and XBox 360 games are still improving considerably year on year, and would likely continue to do so. Besides which many of us just went through the expense of a wave of new peripherals for these consoles. I feel like they had another 3-5 years in them, easy, and I can't see why consumers would be so happy to break out their credit cards again.

Weird to think I might still be waiting on PS3-compatible versions of PS2 titles when I have to decide whether I want a PS4. :o

All that said, yes, as much backwards compatibility as possible (including both software and peripherals) would soften the blow.

  • Caimbeul #56 11 months ago

@Miiiguel: I fully agree. They would be complete fucking idiots not to have full backward compatability, not like the shambles that the 360 had for the original xbox.
  • Caimbeul #57 11 months ago

@MDL199 - Yes! 360 and PS3 are at their peak, yes some games look amazing but we want more!
  • Lucodeath #58 11 months ago

Cant wait, not soon enough for me so Im close to buying a half decent pc.
  • darc #59 11 months ago

"...yes some games look amazing but we want more!"

I hear ya, but there's more to bringing better games to market than piling on the horsepower. Look at the PC market: you can buy into new graphics tech twice a year, easy, but do the games get "better" in any proportional way? No, because it keeps the market confused, and the developers can't keep up with the changes. By contrast, consider how good PS2 games looked at the end of that console's life cycle, despite relatively Fred-Flintstone specs. A real craft came out of years of optimizing to a stable, known hardware platform with an installed base large enough to justify the effort.

Don't get me wrong, I want more powerful consoles eventually, I'm just saying that sooner isn't always better. (And I'm going to be p**ssed if MS/Sony expect me to run out and buy new motion controllers, steering wheels, plastic guitars, et al.)

I'm lying, of course it means I'll have to buy it. Damn. Better start saving...

Timesplitters as a launch game on new console powered by CryEngine3.

I think that is the best gaming news I have heard in about ooh, about a month.
  • Bulbatron #70 11 months ago

Just bought an Xbox 360 slim. Because my old Xbox couldn't hold on for another year - noooooooo - that would be far too convenient. The slim is very nice though.

    Still, TimeSplitters 4 - yay!

I thought TimeSplitters 2 and Future Perfect were both pretty decent. Apart from those timed puzzles in Future Perfect, they were shite.

Could we get a 2012 holiday release, with Halo 4 as a launch title, I think that's very possible. I can't see them releasing Halo 4 on the 360 with a new console right around the corner, it wouldn't make any sense.
  • casodi #72 11 months ago

  • kitsuneyo #73 11 months ago

  • bodhi85uk #74 11 months ago

while i agree we are finally seeing the best the current gen consoles and understand people feel its to soon for new hardware, i think if anything is announced at e3 2012, it wont be released until sometime into or towards the end of 2013, and by then i think everybody would want it.

the only downside to this news is that although 2 years is a long time away in general, for game development its about the right timeframe you'd need for a new game on new hardware, I just hope every great potential current gen games doesn't get put back/transferred. For example, id like to see a Fallout 4 with the Skyrim engine sooner rather than later.
  • MeBrains #75 11 months ago

yep. negotiator started begging "Could we get a 2012 holiday release, with Halo 4 as a launch title, I think that's very possible."

  • Sid-Nice #79 11 months ago

I'm sure the people at Nintendo will love this newsbit, lol. Perfect timing and the Wii U is screwed.

Just like the 360 screwed the inferior Wii?
  • natureboy #80 11 months ago

I think they could have still squeezed the juice for another 3 yrs. Everyone should follow Sony's lead i.e what they did with the PS2 and keep selling their last gen for the nest 10 yrs
  • captainCandy #81 11 months ago

Hahaha Wii U will look as cheap and miserable as Wii looks today when compared to what Microsoft is offering. Nintendo won the latest round, but will lose big time the next one. The same trick doesn't work twice.
  • MaxiSleep #82 11 months ago

I would guess Microsoft smell blood in the water with Nintendo. Releasing early worked for them for the 360, so why not try the same trick again. Plus I would imagine they are starting to get worried about what apple might be up to. The 360 is pretty old tech these days after all and I would guess the 3rd gen ipad will more then match it.
  • Shabbaranks #83 11 months ago

This is better than any news that came out in this years E3.
  • Negotiator1 #84 11 months ago

I don't understand the comments saying it's too early for the next gen, you do know when the 360 was released, don't you? The truth is both consoles are showing their age and with Nintendo releasing a new console in 2012, the big guns have to start showing the next generation.
  • MeBrains #85 11 months ago

neg1: yes, autumn this year it will be six ago since 360 was released.

however, I do not think that I have seen the best games current gen can produce. we can have a lot more innovation still without needing to up the graphics - since that is what it will all boil down to. that is speaking as a games purist though - not as the graphics buff I used to be.
  • IneptPercy #86 11 months ago

One thing which makes me thing this will be impressive is the directx 11 support. Not so much the dx11 itself but more the generation of GPU it would be using, if you think the 360 is more or less an ATI 1950 and look what it does with that power, so something like a 5870 in a console will be amazing.

As for backwards comparability, lets hope its much like the PC root, more powerful hardware = better frame rate and resolution on the old games.

As a (mostly) PC gamer these days due to the lack of 1080p on consoles I am watching what comes next for the consoles as they may convert me back.
  • Climhazzard #87 11 months ago

TIMESPLITTERS!!! Been wanting this for quite sometime. Just a bit annoying im gonna have to buy a new console to play it.
  • Xardan #88 11 months ago

A new Xbox in the next 2-3 years is fine with me. Its likely for the good of all gamers and the industry as a whole. Lets hope MS get it right.
  • HyperTails #89 11 months ago

Timesplitters would be good, but Crytek making it means it'll be graphically good, but lacking in gameplay that is, in fact, broken.
  • Dizzy #90 11 months ago

    >i guess even unreasonable xbots are starting to see 360 is not cutting it any more compared to the competition... :/

    What competition?
  • metallicorphan #91 11 months ago

HyperTails-its Crytek UK who are making the game who used to be Free Radical, who made the past TimeSplitters games
  • BuckEntropy #92 11 months ago

I think people want to read way too much into this - like any of the other Nextbox and PS4 nuggets from the last couple months. For one thing Crytek are attempting to get into the middleware racket with CE3, and planning for a launch showcase with established console cred could be a valuable statement and attract more licensees. They've already put a lot of work into this as a cross platform... platform. So taking this at face value it could mean that they have reason to expect MS to launch before Sony again, but it could also be that - more than with Sony - they can be comfortable with the continuity in the DirectX API, and regardless of the finalized hardware specifications simply developing to DX11 pretty much keeps them on target.

Regardless MS and Sony will NOT launch next year, though we will certainly start hearing the noise.
  • Quixz #93 11 months ago

I don't understand how some of you think that the new Xbox will by ready for purchase in 2012. It's being revealed in 2012 and will most likely be ready for holiday 2013 or early 2014.
  • rottingyoda #94 11 months ago

    2005 + 8 year life cycle = Xbox3

    2013 seems on the money.

I imagine all games will be backward compatible from the 360 to the new console as they were done with the XNA framework. Should be a lot of headaches saved for Msoft.
  • Ashcroft #95 11 months ago

2014 release at the earliest. Microsoft is finally making some money from console games, and if they blink first they risk destroying what little chance they had of making Kinect a critical success. They're in no rush.
  • kinth #96 11 months ago

What MS products have had problems, besides the original 360? The slim fixed the problems of the 360, the original Xbox was built like a tank and there's never been issues with zunes. The 360 was faulty, simply because they rushed the damn thing out so they could be first to the market. That isn't such a big deal for them anymore and I think it's much more important for them to fix that image of themselves.

I very much doubt their next system will have any long term issues like that.

Thank god for this! Let the devs go nuts, finally jump from making sure games run on an ancient Directx9 low ram machine to where we should be. This needs to be true!

I think the new Xbox will be out next Autumn. They are not going to let Nintendo get too much of a head start and if it is announced at E3 next year, the US will get it in the Autumn with presumably Europe following shortly afterwards, hopefully before Xmas. Sony won't be far behind as they lost out big time because Microsoft got a good head start on the current gen.

I think it might explain the lack of new title announcements this year. I would imagine there are any number of titles being held back to launch with new consoles next year when people will be desperate to try out the latest titles with improved graphics etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if we got Kinect 2 with improved sensors, functionality etc still and sold as a separate device and that any future controller will have a touch display.

you are not understanding the buisness. its not wether they should closen the gap between the release of the consoles. its about who can make quality. what happened was when ms released 360 ps3 had a year to test that and make their ps3's graphics better, but they made a mistake and lost the normal AV graphics battle. that and comfotability of controllers were the only discussion. but then ms noticed that their console is noisey and has no internal wi-fi, so then they fixed that by making the slim. now sony awaits for all consoles to be unveiled, then they can test them and use their time advantage to throw the touches that will give them the lead for at least 5 years. so if they wait they r actually working on innovations better than the wii U, graphics better than ms and they can sit around the beach for 5 years. see its not about the gap that u guys say should be closed. they can get better sales if they use time and make something bigger. SORRY ITS TOO LONG

"while i agree we are finally seeing the best the current gen consoles and understand people feel its to soon for new hardware, i think if anything is announced at e3 2012, it wont be released until sometime into or towards the end of 2013, and by then i think everybody would want it."

I could get behind a 2013 release, but anything earlier (e.g. holiday 2012) will seem to soon after all the Kinect hype, etc. MS had been pretty public about extending the life of 360 via peripherals, and very little has been done to leverage that tech thus far. If it all goes the way of the dodo in a year or so, I think a lot of people will feel pretty burned.

Again, the whole argument changes if they release a new console that makes use of all the old peripherals and software. Hell, I'd buy that console tonight. :D
