New Xbox will be at E3 2012 – report
Crytek readying Timesplitters 4 for it.
The Xbox 360's successor will likely debut at E3 2012, with Timesplitters 4 among the titles in development for the new machine, according to a new report.
A "high-ranking" source within developer Crytek let the news slip to VideoGamer. Although the insider didn't confirm system specs, they revealed that the Crysis studio is using DirectX 11 in development.
The source expects Microsoft to unveil and subsequently launch its new machine ahead of Sony, though the studio is also investing resources in PlayStation 4 development.
Crytek is hoping that Timesplitters 4 will be seen as an early visual benchmark for the platform.
First announced by developer Free Radical back in 2007, the FPS sequel was thought to be dead and buried when the studio went into administration in 2009. However, Crytek, who bought up what was left of the Nottingham-based outfit, has seemingly resuscitated the game.
Built using CryEngine 3, it'll apparently focus on branching paths, exploration and sandbox gameplay.
Both Microsoft and Crytek have declined to comment on the story.

I know in face off's PC versions of games are always superior to the console versions but from watching the video's I would say not massively so.
A lot of people took a long while to leave their PS2's behind and jump to the PS3 and 360 as early games weren't a dramatic improvement especially as very few people had high definition tv's and I think take up of a new Xbox and PS4 could take longer still unless the graphical jump get's a lot steeper.

BUT...if we have to have one please make it fully backwards compatible & allow us to use our same Achievements account so we can build on our exisiting ones.

Comment below viewing threshold Show
Of course it'll stay, Achievements is not a 360 thing anymore, it's a Live thing, it's on Games for Windows and most important WP7. It'd make no sense to reset GamerScore of WP7 users just because a new console spawned.

Late 2013 would be pretty much perfect for me.
As others have said, full BC please. Also, some way to keep and play your downloaded games on the new consoles would be good too. I won't hold out much hope for that bit though.

This doesn't sound anything like a Timesplitters game at all. I want to know about the Monkeys, gingerbread men and flaming Snowmen!

Also with peripherals.

Murby, they'd never take gamerscore or achievements away, never in a million years. All your accounts stuff from 360 will cross over to the new one I bet too, XBL is bigger than the 360 these days with it on PC and Phones.

Now we just need Sony to pull the trigger on the Ps4 and it's game over!

And I think Nintendo can release the Wii U as powerful as a Playstation 3.5 at the most. It's gotta to be more powerful than what we have now.

As it is, most 360 and PS3 games barely run at true 720p resolution, most will be narrower and scaled out. As for games running at a true 1080p for rendering, well I suspect you wouldn't run out of fingers if you tried to count them...
Also, many console games maintain their visual quality by running at 30fps.
Modern gaming PCs will easily run at a native 1080p at 60fps at better image quality than their console counter parts (not counting that it will also have higher resolution textures)
With the push on 3D that Sony are making (and Microsoft no doubt will with their next console), then you'd really be wanting to achieve 1080p rendering at 120fps
As for the next Xbox (and PS), so long as they are fully backwards compatible (ie. I can run all my existing games and downloaded content) then it will be a no brainer upgrading, but if they are not, then I don't think I'd drop the money for a new console if there are only going to be a couple of games that I can play on it.

So it'll be out a year after the WiiU. It's gonna make that machine look pretty poor, we can all be sure of that.

Kinect was just a cynical attempt to breath a couple more years in the 360, I think MS will ditch it as soon as the next console is released.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
The fact is that PS3 and XBox 360 games are still improving considerably year on year, and would likely continue to do so. Besides which many of us just went through the expense of a wave of new peripherals for these consoles. I feel like they had another 3-5 years in them, easy, and I can't see why consumers would be so happy to break out their credit cards again.
Weird to think I might still be waiting on PS3-compatible versions of PS2 titles when I have to decide whether I want a PS4.
All that said, yes, as much backwards compatibility as possible (including both software and peripherals) would soften the blow.

I hear ya, but there's more to bringing better games to market than piling on the horsepower. Look at the PC market: you can buy into new graphics tech twice a year, easy, but do the games get "better" in any proportional way? No, because it keeps the market confused, and the developers can't keep up with the changes. By contrast, consider how good PS2 games looked at the end of that console's life cycle, despite relatively Fred-Flintstone specs. A real craft came out of years of optimizing to a stable, known hardware platform with an installed base large enough to justify the effort.
Don't get me wrong, I want more powerful consoles eventually, I'm just saying that sooner isn't always better. (And I'm going to be p**ssed if MS/Sony expect me to run out and buy new motion controllers, steering wheels, plastic guitars, et al.)

Still, TimeSplitters 4 - yay!
I thought TimeSplitters 2 and Future Perfect were both pretty decent. Apart from those timed puzzles in Future Perfect, they were shite.

the only downside to this news is that although 2 years is a long time away in general, for game development its about the right timeframe you'd need for a new game on new hardware, I just hope every great potential current gen games doesn't get put back/transferred. For example, id like to see a Fallout 4 with the Skyrim engine sooner rather than later.

however, I do not think that I have seen the best games current gen can produce. we can have a lot more innovation still without needing to up the graphics - since that is what it will all boil down to. that is speaking as a games purist though - not as the graphics buff I used to be.

As for backwards comparability, lets hope its much like the PC root, more powerful hardware = better frame rate and resolution on the old games.
As a (mostly) PC gamer these days due to the lack of 1080p on consoles I am watching what comes next for the consoles as they may convert me back.

2013 seems on the money.
I imagine all games will be backward compatible from the 360 to the new console as they were done with the XNA framework. Should be a lot of headaches saved for Msoft.

What MS products have had problems, besides the original 360? The slim fixed the problems of the 360, the original Xbox was built like a tank and there's never been issues with zunes. The 360 was faulty, simply because they rushed the damn thing out so they could be first to the market. That isn't such a big deal for them anymore and I think it's much more important for them to fix that image of themselves.
I very much doubt their next system will have any long term issues like that.

I think it might explain the lack of new title announcements this year. I would imagine there are any number of titles being held back to launch with new consoles next year when people will be desperate to try out the latest titles with improved graphics etc.
I wouldn't be surprised if we got Kinect 2 with improved sensors, functionality etc still and sold as a separate device and that any future controller will have a touch display.

I could get behind a 2013 release, but anything earlier (e.g. holiday 2012) will seem to soon after all the Kinect hype, etc. MS had been pretty public about extending the life of 360 via peripherals, and very little has been done to leverage that tech thus far. If it all goes the way of the dodo in a year or so, I think a lot of people will feel pretty burned.
Again, the whole argument changes if they release a new console that makes use of all the old peripherals and software. Hell, I'd buy that console tonight.
