UK Top 40: Zumba Fitness ousts Portal 2

Steel Diver sinks without trace.

Zumba Fitness has toppled Portal 2 to regain the UK all format chart's coveted top spot.

Nintendo 3DS submarine strategy Steel Diver - the first Nintendo title to launch for the system since March - failed to chart.

Assassin's Creed-esque fighter The First Templar is also nowhere to be seen.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior avoids the bargain bin - its enhanced PlayStation 3 port managed 15th place, despite seeming like a long shot.

The top 10 remains largely unchanged, with second place Portal 2 and third to finish Mortal Kombat shuffling down accordingly.

Call of Duty: Black Ops is fourth, while LEGO Star Wars III, FIFA, and Operation FlashPoint rearrange themselves into fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively.

Nintendo's own fitness title Wii Fit: Plus remains healthy in eighth. Pokémon Black leaps back into the top flight with Wii dance title Just Dance 2 to fill ninth and tenth.

The great british public: more concerned with exercising their bodies than their minds

I like the way we're still sniggering about Sniper: Ghost Warrior even while Zumba Fucking Fitness is knocking Portal 2 from the top spot...
  • youhavenomail #4 1 year ago

Over the years I've boarded the hype train and bought the occasional title because everyone else was doing so, but I will never succumb to the pressure to exercise.

The First Templar is so under the radar it's shocking, a pretty fun game. I can see it doing well in Europe outside the UK.

I dont know if its a good or bad thing that i havent heard of the first templar and i follow gaming news almost daily.

I saw an advert on prime time telly for Steel Diver recently and wondered what the hell Ninty were doing. I mean, they expected punters who bought Wii Fit, Nintendogs, Brain Training, Pokemon etc to buy a submarine game?! Totally idiotic.

'its enhanced PlayStation 3 port managed 15th place, despite seeming like a LONG SHOT' - I see what you did there.

Mortal Kombat is sold out over here in South Africa. That's only happened once before with Mass Effect.

Can still get it online though.

What do Zumba Fitness and Portal have in common? Cake, and the lack of it.

Given Zumba and Portal share the top of the charts, I'd say there's a refreshing amount of both going on. Christ, it only takes a 10 minute walk round any city centre in the UK to show that they're both needed.

No top 40 charting 3DS titles...

Admittedly there's not a great deal available for it but it indicates that people aren't just not buying games for the console, they're not buying the console itself (as you'd expect them to buy 1-3 games with it)
  • Olemak #15 1 year ago

I think the success of Zumba is a good thing. It gives the mums something to do with the household console, and it might make it easier for parents to stay updated on what gaming is. Also, a fitness game makes more sense than a fitness video or tv show - so it is a good fit :)

Zumba does not threaten CoD or Diablo or Portal. Yes portal is second this week, but because anybody stood in the store thinking about what game to get and chose Zumba over portal. These games are not in direct competition.

Maybe Zumba can get more people interested on gaming, or at least understand a bit more about recreational computer interaction.

    I bought Zumba. I bought Portal 2.

Yet still no EG review for Zumba fitness?
  • CallousB #18 1 year ago

I would have bought Steel Diver if it was out on launch day. I've had the time to be put off buying it since then.

Nintendo really need to change their 3DS marketing strategy..I'd go back to the team they used when they launched the Wii (I was always confused as to why they dropped them after they had such success). The current ads really aren't doing a good job of simulating 3D or making it stand out as a new console as opposed to an iteration. Also surprised how little they are hyping the firmware update due in a few weeks....as depending on content that could provide a nice sales boost (if they can be bothered to hype it).

If Nintendo aren't careful...project cafe will end up launching before 3DS has really established itself.

"Yet still no EG review for Zumba fitness?"

Yeah, bit of an oversight, that.
  • Liquidoodle #20 1 year ago

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Back in at 39? Batman: Arkham Asylum at 33? The Sims 3 at 28!? Video games charts are weird, I'm sure there's lots of newer games out than those... I wonder if any of this is due to the way places stock themselves?

Shame Zumba won't stop you from being a fatty fat fat, go out and get some real exercise! Funny that gamers used to be told by parents around the globe to go out in the fresh air yet now people choose to exercise in doors with games... hypocrites?
  • PoundHound #21 1 year ago

@Landlock (#6) - Agreed. I've played it both single player and split screen co-op. Both work well. Aside from a very dodgy camera and an extremely underwhelming 1st level, it's a solid little hacky-slasher.

Steel Diver should've been an eShop launch title, really. I guess Nintendo won't be giving third party games priority from here on out, at least until RE: Revelations--they need to get Zelda, Star Fox, Kid Icarus, Super Mario 3D, Mario Kart and Animal Crossing out in the next 12 months if they plan on shipping 16 million 3DS units this financial year. I guess it's a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't. They're damned if they give third parties a clear "launch window", with only a couple of minor first party titles (Steel Diver/Pilotwings) and a slow burning title (Nintendogs), because third parties haven't responded with high quality, heavy hitting games. The best we've had is a port of a PS3/360 title. And they're damned if they launch with Mario or Zelda, because it's "the same old IP" and third parties can't compete against it.

I am actually really interested in fitness games. I really like them. I'm also currently about 60% through my second playthrough of Mass Effect 2, this time on the 'insanity' difficulty level. It is possible to like both types of games.

On that note, I'll also join the list looking for a Zumba review - I've heard it's pretty poor. Also, EG, it's not only for the Wii and 360 you know: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004P...
  • Trent_Steel #24 1 year ago

It seems the 3DS as a whole is sinking without trace, not just Steel Diver. I'll still be buying one when the decent games arrive though.
  • smelly #25 1 year ago

Dunno anything about the fitness game.. but maybe it's not as short or repetitive as portal 2?

Maybe it doesnt crash as much or have such annoyingly long (and frequent) loading either.
