Is We Dare too raunchy for America?

Racy party game could be Europe-only.

Saucy PS3 and Wii party game We Dare will not be available in America, publisher Ubisoft has confirmed.

A spokesperson for the publisher told IGN that the party game, which sees you spanking your chums, snogging the controller and stripping down to your undies, will "absolutely not see release in the United States".

No further explanation was offered, though a glimpse at the rather extraordinary trailer, which has now been region-restricted to Europe on YouTube, might offer a few clues.

Ubisoft is taking an unusual approach with this one. No formal press release has been issued announcing the game's arrival, and so far our interview requests have fallen on deaf ears.

However, an Amazon product description throws up a little more information.

"Use the Wii-mote and PS3 Move controller in unbelievable ways, as you've never imagined before... wave it around to the beat of your favourite tunes, old and new... put it in your pocket and act-out flirtatious actions..." reads the listing.

"Sometimes co-operative hugging helps, and it certainly doesn't hurt.

"And there's more! You can also use your Wii Balance Board for additional gameplay based on pure body mass... are you the lightest one in the group? Perhaps shedding some clothes will even the playing field... it'll definitely make the party more interesting!"

It's probably worth noting at this point that the game has a 12 and over PEGI rating.

35 "fun and flirtatious" mini-games are promised, for up to four players on Wii or two on PlayStation 3.

According to the Amazon listing, you'll be able to pick it up on 11th March.

It's laughable that violent games are so prevalent, and basically tolerated, when games featuring sexual content are considered the spawn of the devil. Which of these two are more acceptable, in the long run? Violence, or something that we rely on as a species to survive?
  • inutaihanyou #4 1 year ago

Cue "US hypocrisy on violence and sexual freedom" statements :l

But yes, this is a stupid decision by publishing, i don't think i'd ever play the game myself or think it'll be very good, but there are much "worse"(depending on your thought process) games in this regard than this in the US being sold, i mean GTASA was still sold and it had a full on sex scene

I still think the trailer is just a joke, and until it actually sells in the shops I will maintain that stance.

That still of the trailer is almost as horrifying as the whole concept of the game.

hahaha this game is just gonna be ridiculous, who wants to spank a wiimote, when you get to spank the real thing? ;) .... All I can say, is that I just hope they washed that wiimote before and after making that video xD

Mister-Wario : Group sex is not for reproduction and puts you in danger as you never know what disgusting/lethal STD the next perv will pass on to you.

Needless to mention, there is girl/guy and girl/girl action, but no guy/guy action depicted. Softcore is actually more pervy than any other porn genre. Mini-skirts, lower upper class setting, loose wives, pimp husbands... disgusting. It's like everyone's acting like that creepy old guy trying to fondle uneasy preys, and his drives are reciprocated by others simply because this is the twisted setting built up by his own deranged mind and he's really touching himself.

Looks like a brilliant idea a 50 year old perv came up with, singlehandedly.

I... what was that supposed to be?

Even going "hey! let's have an orgy!" is somehow better and sounds less stupid. If that's what you want to do, fine, you don't need to pretend play at it with the Wii. The only way this will ever get brought out at a party and not instantly kill said party is for ones arranged via Craigslist with total strangers.

You don't have to even go that far. Just think "military complex" and "corporate greed", and you'll go much farther than a single social issue like this ever could :l

To be fair to Keith Vaz, if, as it appears, the game basically tells you to take off your clothes, spank each other and such, I'm sure a lot of parents of twelve year olds would consider it inappropriate.

It does raise an interesting question. The reason given for awarding the game a 12, rather than 15 certificate is that it doesn't include any graphic content but the objection to this game is not about what happens on screen but what the game specifically encourages players to actually do.

How do you handle that within the current rating system? It's not something the ratings system has ever had to deal with before. There have been board games which operate along a similar theme but they've always had the good sense to label themselves 18+.

Just because a game is 18 rated, that doesn't mean parents can't let their kids play it but I don't think it's unreasonable to give parents some responsibility in this situation.

As for the US, it looks like a decision by the publisher rather than the government, so it's not some great civil rights issue. There are no implications beyond this one game and my guess is you won't be missing anything very special.

  • bf #24 1 year ago

If nothing else it shows that PEGI markings et al have bugger all to do with actual suitability and their use can thus be questioned.
And to calm the concerned man in the Telegraph article who worried that "something could get out of hand", this is a wii game you have a strap on to avoid that...
  • AdamAsunder #25 1 year ago

    Um,

Watching that trailer I'm not proud to say 'I don't get it.'
  • gjgjg #26 1 year ago

I remember when the wii came out there was claims that porn based games would be just around the corner since people will be waggling controls for the first time. I didn't think that this was the closest thing to it we would see after these years. I guess they were waiting for the ps3mote before taking the first step.
  • Lusterpurge #27 1 year ago

I think this game is a rude wakeup call for all us virgins who thought sex didn't consist of two couples in the same living room playing around with a Wiimote.
  • Dekyriel #28 1 year ago

"To be fair to Keith Vaz"

It's not necessary to be fair to Keith Vaz. He's Jack Thompson, MP. Any chance to get hysterical about videogames and he's on it.

Game will sink like a stone and the whole thing is a PR stunt by Ubi.
  • DiamondIce #31 1 year ago

I thought old Keith had come round to accepting gaming? He knows he wants a bit of this game, though. Ooh, a lovely bit of action with Harriet Harman.

"Use the Wii-mote and PS3 Move controller in unbelievable ways, as you've never imagined before... wave it around to the beat of your favourite tunes, old and new... put it in your pocket and act-out flirtatious actions..."

It is a sad indication of my mind that something vulgar popped into my head after reading this. Best blurb ever.
  • joelstinton #32 1 year ago

kinda of makes sense.. nothing is left to the imagination over the pond... quoting from mark from the peep show "isn't it just the usual dead eyed men f*****g dead eyed women in a desperate world of pain?"

Still when fox news get hold of this game..
  • Freek #33 1 year ago

Seems strange they don't even want to talk about the game to the european press. Seriously Ubi, if you're emberrassed about the game, you shoulden't have developed it in the first place.

  • Murton #38 1 year ago

"Violence, or something that we rely on as a species to survive?" - for quite some time we've relied on violence to survive as well. We're a violent species after all.

Said it on the thread for the trailer may as well say it here. If you need a video game to inspire and maintain a game of dare then you're doing it wrong. I'm sure that the vast majority if not all 35 of these "fun and flirtatious" mini-games would be a damned sight more fun and certainly more flirtatious if the game controllers weren't involved.

  • drhickman1983 #44 1 year ago

Still can't quite work out the point of this game. As some kind of "cheeky" foreplay I can think of quite a few things that would be better and more fun.

And if you ignore the entire sexual pretence, you're left with a game that would just lead to awkwardness and the inability to look people in the eye afterwards. (ok, sexual congress usually leads to awkwardness and the inability to look people in the eye afterwards too, but at least you get some sex out of it.)

I guess the 18-30 holiday bunch will like this sorta thing though. And what people get up to with their Wiimotes is their own business.

  • Zaiz #52 1 year ago

I honestly think this would float in the US, Ubisoft is just going for the "omfg banned!" tactic of promotions, since it is really cheap and pretty effective at getting the word out. Maybe they'll even ride in like heroes and deliver the game to the US to grossly inflate sales because they are "listening to the fans."

I hate this indignant outrage, it's as if the game is being forced on children at gun point. It's not, if you don't like the content, don't buy it and don't let your kids play it. The ratings board clearly don't think that the games content would be very damaging to anyway over 12 and I trust their decision. A low age rating doesn't mean that it's automatically aimed specifically at kids. The Seventh Seal is a PG, but it's hardly a kids film is it?

The arguments in the article about how games like this encourage teenagers to have sex are hilarious. Teenagers want to have sex because they're a mess of hormones, not because a video game makes it look cool. The mother who likened it to spin the bottle had it fairly spot on. On the other hand the mother who was worried about her 13 year old daughter playing it should probably worry more in general, as if she can't stop her daughter playing a game then she can't stop her going any further whether a video game is involved or not.

    Oh well, it will continue.

We're not paying any price, god, so many simpletons on game sites. There are flirting/racy board games too, do you really think this has impacted the sale of board games in any real way?! Oh children will never be able to enjoy board games anymore with this filth in the public mind, somebody think of the children!

Of course not! They're totally different games for totally different people.

Personally, I'm kind of surprised Nintendo has greenlighted this, given their stance, but I think it's a great new direction. And no, I'm not actually wanting to buy it. A Wii drinking game, on the other hand, bring it on.

typical US hate. a few facts:

    1. there are no US laws preventing the releases of this game. it's Ubisoft making the call. no doubt to prevent themselves from receiving a public (not legal) backlash from a very vocal minority, but still.

    2. there would be very little hypocrisy going on between violence and sex, as violent games generally receive just as much flak from the ignorant non-game communities as something like this might. the GTA series had it's share of boycott groups long before San Andreas' infamous Hot Coffee.
