Cheap Gears of War Triple Pack revealed

UPDATE: It's a US-only offer.

UPDATE: Epic Games has confirmed that the Gears of War Triple Pack is currently a US-only release.

A spokesperson for the developer told Eurogamer, "The Gears of War Triple Pack is a US regional offer. In the UK, Gears of War 2 – complete with the All Fronts game add-on content – has joined Gears of War in the elite Classics range, where Microsoft offers its best games at great value prices.

"You can pick up Gears of War 2 Classic Edition for ERP £19.99/ €29.99, while Gears of War is currently available at ERP £14.99 /€19.99."

ORIGINAL STORY: A cheap Gears of War Triple Pack that ties all major releases so far will be released on 15th February in the US.

Inside the Triple Pack are Gears of War 1, Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 2: All Fronts Collection (Road to Run campaign, 19 extra multiplayer maps).

Suggested price: $29.99. We're trying to get a UK date and price for you now.

Buy it and you'll also get the first Gears of War Multiplayer Map Pack and Hidden Fronts free of charge.

Why?

Gears of War punches with the likes of Halo on Xbox 360. It's big, bold, brutal and brilliant.

Gears of War 1 was a visual feast for Xbox 360 and, by definition, Unreal Engine 3, which everyone and their aunt now uses. Eurogamer said: 8/10, in both a single-player and multiplayer review.

Gears of War 2 was better; more mature, more intelligent, more finessed. Eurogamer said: 9/10.

The Gears of War 2: All Fronts Collection Tom Bramwell ploughed into in the summer of 2009.

Gears of War 3 was supposed to arrive early this year, in April. But for unknown reasons the game was pushed back to the autumn. Epic's said this wasn't because of the game's quality. And if you believe that, only explanation remains: Microsoft wants a big-name blockbuster for Xbox 360 this autumn.

Epic wants Gears of War 3 to take things a step futher. One of the best if overlooked additions are dedicated multiplayer servers, which will eradicate host advantage and provide credible, stable platforms for people to play on.

Gears of War 3 also puts a brilliant spin on wave-based co-op: be the enemy. You'll be cast as differing members of the locust army, including as a Boomer and Berserker, and you'll need to wipe the goodies out.

Oli Welsh had a go for Eurogamer. You might have even had a try, had you showed up at the Eurogamer Expo 2010.

Nice collection at a reasonable price. Kinda like the Team Ico / GoW collections introduce new gamers to the series and ultimately prepare gamers for the respective final chapter. Glad to see MS treats one of their best franchises the same way.

GeoW3 shall be a blast and a real treat for 360 gamers =)

Gears 2 was one long string of contrived set pieces and bombastically silly gimmicks, I loved the first for it's fantasitcally solid combat and engaging battles. The second went too far overboard in trying to mix the core gameplay up and suffered as a result in my opinion. I can barely remember any of the individual 'battles', just over the top one play and you're bored on rails sections.

Righto, i'm borrowing an Xbox this week to play some of the exclusives at length (Gears 1 is first on the list, i've played a bit before and loved it), but my 'pooter should be able to run it merrily enough - is the PC port worth a purchase if i can find it?

    I'll be getting this.

Although it's not really like the PS3's HD remakes as they are HD upconverts this is just 2 games + maps bundled together.

@Inquisitor: I said exactly the same thing when I first started Gears 2... when were the setpieces and cutscenes going to end?

They do. There's a lot going on that you need to know about at first, but after the opening chapter there's plenty of the in-your-face battles to be had. It's a really spectacular game all the way through.

Bit of a mis-leading name, from the name I thought it would be all three games bundled together, not GOW1, GOW2 and some DLC...

Still, worth grabbing if you haven't yet sampled the best implementation of stop 'n' pop shooting this generation. I cannot wait for GOW3... :)

Yeah, when I first read the name of the collection I thought it was a big box with GoW3 and the earlier games thrown in as well.

Calling it a triple pack for two games and a DLC pack is a bit far fetched. At least the games are good (although I haven't played 2 yet).
  • Skooch #8 1 year ago

Ah, yes, the classic 'Road to Run' campaign extra, involves roadie running for 24 miles before you get your gold lancer and a kiss from the Locust Queen.....

    ;)

    Great deal, misleading name!

@FuzzyDuck No, don't bother with the PC version of GoW. IMO they didn't port it well at all (I have the PC and Xbox360 versions).
  • KDR_11k #11 1 year ago

Not really a triple pack if there's only 2 games and some DLC in it, is it?

I should probably get it anyway, none of the GoW games were released in Germany so I haven't played them.

    More maturelol.

"Gears 2 was one long string of contrived set pieces and bombastically silly gimmicks"

While I agree about your points, isn't it also true that EVERY game, EVERY action movie has contrived set-pieces. The trick is to make it seem organic and not contrived .

And from that perspective, I can't really fault GeOW2. It was fun, which is what mattered.

About the only thing cringe-worthy in GeOW2 was the obvious and not-so-subtle attempt to inject sensitivity and pathos via the Dom-and-wife back-story.

    The rest was all good.

    @cw-

    Cool, thanks for the heads-up.

Looking forward to getting my teeth into part 1 this week now.

@FuzzyDuck Actually, I'd wholly recommend the PC port. There were issues with some computers at launch, but if you have anything from 2008+, it should run wonderfully, at a much better resolution than the 360 version. I've played through both, and at 1680x1050, the colours in GeoW (yes, there were colours!) were jaw-dropping (in 2008. ;P ). Mouse-based controls add a fantastic twitch-speed element to the gameplay, and smoothly active-reloading a sniper rifle and instantly popping heads is such a satisfying experience on PC that GeoW2 felt sluggish on 360 afterwards. Not to forget...there's a whole extra chapter in the PC version that's not in the 360 version, where you are chased by and fight a Brumak. Sure, you do that plenty of times in GeoW2, but this it was the first time in the franchise, and you're actually on foot. Wholly recommended over simply getting a 360 copy, but if you're looking for GeoW2 as well, it'd be pretty cheap to get this pack, so it's up to your preferences. :)

I really wish they'd release the extra chapters/acts from the Gears 1 PC release in one of these new re releases for the 360. I don't like that I've missed out on them and I'm not going to buy a PC just to play it (I'm on a Mac).

The beast mode was... overrated. Tried it an Eurogamer, and it just felt a bit gimmiky, not like there was any real depth to it other than "spawn as a locust and attack them, then do it again with a bigger one."
