Super Mario Galaxy 2 sells loads

Pokemon: Black/White not far behind.

Wonderful Wii platformer Super Mario Galaxy 2 has sold a whopping 5.1 million units worldwide, Nintendo has announced.

Mario's latest deserves its sales success: we awarded it 10/10 in our June review.

Phenomenon Pokémon: Black & White, though, will no doubt top it as Nintendo's best-selling game of 2010: the DS game is already on 4.07 million units having only gone on sale in Japan last month. The sales stats are buried within Nintendo's latest financial report.

Wii Party, which released in July in Japan, is a million seller. The game was released on our shores earlier this month, and received a warm 7/10 from Christian Donlan.

A most joyful game it is. Completet it the other day. Hours upon hours of gaming bliss

Definitely is one of my Top 5 games of the year. I wonder where the 3D Mario platformers can go next though. Galaxy seems so perfect, offering immense diversity throughout, both in its environments and gameplay. Sure Nintendo can pull it off though.

Everyone bigging themselves up for Christmas?
Plus it puts the game back in the public eye for new wii owners.

It feels odd to read about how ludicrously popular the Pokemon series is. I've never played any of them, and even growing up as a gamer I don't remember hearing a word about it (other than the cartoon series, which I had no idea was based on a game until years later)

I'd like to try one out, but there appears to be a million of them to choose from.

Just think with fans like myself still out there who are yet to pick it up those figures will keep on rising as well.

Yes, it is a great game. I just wish there were more great games for my poor little Wii and me to play though :(

Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 have easily been two of the best games of this generation. As good as games like Modern Warfare 2 and Halo: Reach are, I really wish the people who played those kind of games would pull their heads out of their collective asses and try Mario Galaxy. "OMFG COLOUR?! MUST B 4 KIDZ LOL." Missing out on a complete and utter gem of a series just for it's aesthetic look is quite frankly pathetic.

@muters partially due to excellent marketing through the cartoon series but also because it is a really really good game

SMG1 didn't do so well, did it? Good to see this one get the recognition it deserves. I gave a game design lecture at my university and borrowed heavily from the game. In fact I feel the students would learn more about game design if they just played the game than any university teacher could ever teach them, there's just so many really brilliant ideas in there..

SMG 2 world wide vs Pokemon in Japan only.
    In comparison Pokemon sells more.

It's a decent number, but considering that a ho-hum title like Force Unleashed sold more than 7 and shooters usually sell more than 12, a brilliant game such as this deserved more.
