Visceral unsure on Dante's Inferno sequel

And don't expect annual Dead Space titles.

Development on a sequel to Dante's Inferno is not underway, developer Visceral Games has revealed, and there are no immediate plans to get started.

Joystiq asked Visceral's Zach Mumbach whether we'd be seeing adaptations of the remaining sections of Dante's Divine Comedy.

"I'm sure that if enough people are like, 'I got 60 dollars for Purgatory or Paradiso,' then we would make that game. But I don't know. I don't get to make those decisions."

Visceral's God of War competitor sliced its way onto PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 last year. Eurogamer's Ellie Gibson was relatively unimpressed, awarding it 6/10.

Mumbach went on to reveal that the studio was under no pressure from publisher EA to release annual Dead Space titles.

"I think they do a real good job. I've never felt like, 'We should be doing this, but EA is making us do that.' Especially since JR's [CEO John Riccitiello] come on board . JR's like 'Make good games. I need good games, give me good games.'"

Dead Space 2 arrives on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on 25th January 2011. A downloadable 'midquel', Dead Space Ignition, is available on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade tomorrow.

The world continues to turn at the prospect of there not being a 'Dante's Inferno' sequel. Strange.

This John dude is really making a good impression on me and changing EA around.

Stick to what you know Viceral: atmospheric horror with a hint of action.
Third person hack and slash is not your genre.

I want a Dante sequel. Is that enough Visceral?

I can live without another hack and slash being released into an already saturated genre, especially after the deeply average original game. You could generate enough power to run a country by harnessing the energy put out by Dante spinning in his grave.

Dante's Inferno was bargin bin fun at best, And an annual Dead Space would be a bad thing too as you know the series would become stale.

I love Dead Space Felt like a proper survival horror something of a rarity this gen. I hope DS2 will surpass it in all the right ways.

    Good, Dante's was utterly terrible.

I really enjoyed Dante's Inferno. The DLC was wicked fun too. Probably completed it three times. It would suck if they didn't carry on. It didn't do bad, critically. On Metacritic is has a score of 73 based on 71 reviews.

But how did it do commercially? Did it sell well? I know it fell down the charts pretty quickly.

Clearly the difference between being a developer for EA and for Activision these days. Riccitiello actually cares about the quality of the games his company publishes, Kotick just thinks like a CEO, it's all about money. Too bad EA's version doesn't give them the results they deserve.

Good thing there's not going to be an annual Dead Space, loved the first part, but you can't innovate enough if you have the pressure of releasing a title each year.

Dante's Inferno drip fed Achievement points which gave purpose to an otherwise mindless slog. Just like Assassin's Creed I was on auto pilot from halfway in and just wished the whole damn thing would end. Assassin's Creed 2 however is excellent so maybe a sequel could rectify Dante's problems.

In my opinion, games generally should go through at least 2 years of development. There are of course exceptions, such as productions small(er) in scale and possibly sports games.

On a sidenote, I prefer quality over quantity. Based on that, I don't agree with people complaining about delayed releases.

A lot of the best people that worked on DI, when that project was finished, went over to Dead Space 2. (DI started from a side team - the ones going to DS2 - challenging themselves, and picked up traction). They're all about sharing talent/tech, at Visceral. For THIS reason, it is unlikely that we'll see D2, until after DS2 is released.

It probably needs a reboot, i'd really like to see what he was like as a teenager.
