Cryptic has "several other projects"

Besides Star Trek, Champions, Neverwinter.

There are yet more projects underway at Cryptic Studios besides Star Trek Online, Champions Online and Neverwinter, Jack Emmert has revealed to Eurogamer.

"We've got plenty of other games under wraps," Emmert, the boss, told us.

"That's kind of cool - you can at least say I let slip that I have other projects underway; I have several other projects here at Crytpic."

Several? "Yeah," he reaffirmed. "These other projects have been underway for quite some time."

The news that Cryptic's got "several" unnanounced games on the go is sure to surprise fans of the Atari-owned developer.

It's currently busy keeping Star Trek Online and Champions Online ticking over and is developing recently announced new PC project Neverwinter.

Neverwinter is positioned as a follow-up to BioWare's Neverwinter Nights but won't be what Cryptic usually turns out: an MMO. Instead, Emmert's studio has decided to make multiplayer online games, albeit those with fees, MMO-style update models and persistent worlds. The difference is negligible at first glance.

Neverwinter will also be different in terms of quality, after the lacklustre performances of Star Trek Online and Champions Online. But, realised Emmert, "You're only as good as your last game."

Maybe they should focus on one game and do it very well, instead of turning around lots of very average games very quickly.

    Just a thought.

Must be pretty easy when they can just reskin the same fuggin game.

So basically he is saying: "We have plenty of other games under development, and we cannot give enough resources to them which is why most of them will be utter shit, for which I apologize"?

    EG Should edit the headline:

Cryptic has "several other projects" which will all get 6/10 reviews and be unfinished at launch
  • Spekingur #5 1 year ago

Yes, because Cryptic only has one development team.
    /sarcasm

They may have more than one dev team but that doesn't mean anything, does it?

6 people working on one thing will put out a more polished experience than 3 groups of 2 people working on 3 projects.

Who is a fan of Cryptic? It's like being a fan of malaria.

@darkmorgado - agreed, I thought that was what he said in a previous interview, it doesn't look like they'll follow through now.

Several other games that look like and play the same as CO, STO etc etc.

    Awesome =/

To be fair, champions was a lot of fun, when i got it recently. It has almost zero end game though.

But, they've too much on ther plate, and when i saw neverwinter nights, i groaned. Do we really need another fantasy mmo?

I just think it is a bit naive to assume that there is only one development team within this (or any other) dev company regardless of how well or bad their games turn out.

CO was dire and clearly isnt getting any love from the dev's but STO is getting alot of attention and things are improveing bit by bit, if only they could fix the ground based combat its such a boring grind compared to the space fights.

Still miles ahead of conan and WaR.

Champions Online is a lot of fun, for about a month. But by that point you feel like you're either stuck on an awful treadmill of XP grinding with little new to see or you start over and go through the same forced route of the same locations and missions. With a bit more variation it could be great but as it is, once you get over the novelty of your first 10 or so levels of powers, it becomes really dull. And it's a shame, as it has potential to be excellent. It just seems the devs can't be arsed with it and the updates are almost contractual rather than through any actual desire to give players a good game.
