The Warcraft movie is a story of orcs versus humans

"It's about both sides."

The first tentative details on the Warcraft movie have seeped out of BlizzCon.

During a panel at the convention today Blizzard executives and movie director Duncan Jones confirmed that the Warcraft movie, which begins filming next year for a late 2015 release date, tells a story of orcs and humans that rekindles memories of the first Warcraft game.

We don't know much at this stage, but Jones and Blizzard's Chris Metzen did confirm the film with feature Anduin Lothar and Durotan. In the video games Lothar was the leader of the Alliance and battled against the invading orcs. Durotan was the first Chieftain of the Frostwolf Clan. The film will be an origin story of sorts, setting up the Warcraft universe as it is today in the games.

During the panel, Jones, director of Moon and Source Code and veteran Warcraft player, insisted the film will tell the story from both the humans and the orcs perspective. "It's about both sides," he said. "It's going to be red and blue."

The Warcraft movie will probably end up with a PG-13 rating, Jones said, but reassured the audience of its adult content. He pointed to the Batman movies, which were PG-13, and that scene with the Joker and the pencil.

Visually, it'll be a mixture of live action and CGI, with a style described as "Avatar meets Game of Thrones". Jones also compared the film to Gladiator, calling it "gritty".

Some concept art was shown, hinting at locations we may see in the film: Draenor, the homeworld of the orcs, the magical city of Dalaran, Ironforge, city of dwarves, and Stormwind, home of the Alliance. Jones suggested the bulk of the movie will be set in the Eastern Kingdoms.
