Sun sets on State of Decay dev's Moonrise

Servers shut down 31st December 2015.

State of Decay developer Undead Labs has called time on its other game, Moonrise.

Free-to-play creature collector Moonrise has been in beta on Steam as an Early Access title for a few months. Undead Labs boss Jeff Strain said it failed to prove popular enough to keep running.

"What we've found is that while some people really love Moonrise, there were unfortunately many more people who played the game and then moved on after a few days," Strain said in a post on the Undead Labs website.

"For a standalone, offline game that might be fine; but for an online game with significant server hosting costs and an expectation for ongoing development and new content, it can mean a game that not only doesn't pay for it's development costs, but might even cost money to operate," Strain said.

"As you can imagine, that's not something that makes sense for an independent studio like Undead Labs, nor for that matter would it be a good business decision even for a large publisher."

So, Undead Labs will not commercially release Moonrise. Its current focus is on changing the game to make it better for existing players. Indeed a new update is already available on Steam. Then, at midnight, 31st December 2015, Undead Labs will switch the Moonrise servers off for good.
