Yakuza 4 dated for Japan News

PlayStation 3 News by Robert Purchese

9 December, 2009

SEGA, a day after announcing Yakuza 3 for the West, has revealed a Japanese date for Yakuza 4.

This second PS3 instalment will arrive there on 18th March 2010, according to regional magazine Famitsu (spotted by Kotaku). We're unlikely to hear of a Western Yakuza 4 release for a while, so importing - for those familiar enough with the Japanese language - may be an option.

Coinciding with Yakuza 4's date are a batch of 40 new screenshots for the game on Gamikaze (spotted by VG247). Man in oil drum: check, man hanging upside from wire in underpants: check, lunging headbutt: check, knee-slam on face of prone target: check.

Catch-up with our Yakuza 3 import review to see what the series is all about.

Without enraging the wrath of the PS elite can I ask do the Yakuza games improve? I finally got around to trying the first recently and it seems like a really poor Shenmue. After all the praise they get I was expecting something better TBH. Is 2 better or should I not bother if I didn't like the first one?

Bad09: I don't think you'll incur any Wrath as it's a perfectly sensible question. I've not played any of the previous games but I've heard a lot of good things, I might check out the 3rd one when it comes out over here but there are so many other games demanding my attention next year I don't know if I'll get the chance.

I guess I'll see the reviews and whatnot closer to Western release day and see what the big deal is, it's supposedly a heavily story-driven experience so it has that going for it at the very least.

I've played the Japanese demo a while ago and it was really fun (although I couldn't understand $H!7). But I wasn't too pleased with the graphics. It looks really dated. What is it with the Japanese developers? Why do most of them have such a hard time shifting from last generation to this generation graphics wise?

Gameplay-wise, 2 is marginally better than 1. The production values are better, IMHO, but the main issue is whether you can or not stomach the same (slightly clunky) fighting system. I personally like it, and I enjoyed both games.

Just make sure you all buy Yakuza 3 next March, rather than doing what I suspect a lot of people will and waiting for it to come down in price (given that Final Fantasy XIII and loads of other stuff is out at the same time). I suspect it'll need to do well for this to have any chance of being translated.

@bad09: Poor Shenmue? Why do you day that? I think it's a pretty alternative with an engaging story, fun combat system and a more 'alive' virtual world.

@eddiep: I imagined that they might have made a smoother fighting experience, by now...Is that not the case? That, and the regularly awful vo, took a lot of 1's appeal away for me, to the point that I put it down, and got caught up with other games that weren't as afflicted - If I were to return to Yakuza, it would be now, but I guess I'll just have to wait and see until review time, to find out how the pieces have fallen, this time. At least the game will be released, at all.

So, I guess that Yakuza 4 will come out in Europe in, what, 2012?

@machetazo: "by now" - well, I only played Yakuza 1 and 2, which are both rather old (Yakuza 2 was released in 2006 in Japan). Yakuza 3 was released in 2009.
