White Knight Chronicles gets release date

PS3 RPG out in Japan this year. Just.

PS3 exclusive White Knight Chronicles will be released in Japan on December 25th, reports Kotaku.

Details on the Level 5-developed RPG remain scant, but the 'White Knight' of the story is a man named Lenard, and reports suggest it will be a true epic - with playtime somewhere in the region of 50 to 60 hours.

An interview in Famitsu with Level 5's Akihiro Hino claimed, "This is the first, big RPG that the PS3 has been waiting for." Fighting talk.

With just a few weeks to go until the Tokyo Game Show, expect more news on this one soon. We'll be there to write it down and put it on the internet. And before you ask, a release date hasn't yet been confirmed for the rest of the world.

In the meantime, check out the title's gamepage.

I give it another year before they release it with a horrible US English dub and remove the Japanese voice over completely.

Wouldn't stop me buying the game, but I do hate it when they do that.

Hopefully thanks to BluRay they'll be able to keep the Japanese voices intact.

    50-60 isn't epic. 200 is epic.

unless your 200 hours are padded out with villager fetch and return quests...

I want this game more than any other. Have done since I saw the first trailer in 2006.

Level 5 are the best developers of RPGs around and have yet to fail - with this one looking stunning, I doubt they are due one.

Very much looking forward to this, I just hope Sony cranks out the western version of it a bit quicker than last time (2 bloody years!).

I'm keeping my expectations realistic though. While early demo's looked to promise the earth and then some, I'm expecting it to turn out as a slightly prettier, slightly expanded Rogue Galaxy.

Level 5 are hella tallented and probably the RPG makers that I have the most time and love for, but they do have a certain way of doing things; a certain formula and scope they tend not to go too far outside, so I'm expecting:

    Button-mashing combat
    A big, mostly seamless world
Very simplified stat and equipment upgrading
Item-combining in some form - possibly using a purple frog.
A couple utterly inane and pointless distractions which i will totally ignore at no detriment to the main game.

all the above points sound like my recipe for success!

Sony could do with learning a few things from MS with regard to getting near global releases for JRPGs - at least we can import the US version if necessary. Looking forward to this.

Very, it took till the end of 08 and early 09 for the west for a decent exclusive PS3 JRPG? smh

I so want this, but with JP voice though, otherwise get lost.

If LO or BD can do it, so can this.

Really looking forward to this; I'm a big Level 5 fan and this is one of my most anticipated PS3 games yet.

I just hope we see a PAL release a bit quicker than previous Level 5 games.

I also hope they haven't included annoying 'corridor' levels or random dungeons. I also hope they combat is good; it was a bit flat in Rogue Galaxy.

It doesn't have to be PAL, just have English text. One of the benefits of the PS3 is that we can import with a certainty that it'll work. That way we don't have to wait the extra 6-months, like with Vesperia.

Just in time for Sony... going below selling 10K (a week) consoles in Japan is not a good sign. This will save their ass in Japan.

I love my PS3 but there is 1 thing I hate when it comes to Sony and PS3 devs policy!!!! I DONT WANT TO FEKIN WAIT 1 YEAR FOR A GOOD GAME!!!! coz ofc Japan first and 6-12 months later rest of the noobs.....

At least it will prolly have original VA since its blue ray >.> sooo if it will suck ass, we can always switch........man at least SEGA has US and EU offices, so we get valkyrie chronicles in 2 months, way faster if it would be with a developer like Level 5 >.>

Didn't Level 5 develop Dragon Quest: Journey of the Cursed King? If it's anything like that, I want it!
  • menage #17 3 years ago

    @saku

Fuck, forgot that that was coming here so soon. Another one for the list . That makes 2 for PS3. Bring out Disgaea 3 and make it 3 goddammit.

I saw some early footage from this game back in 2006 when it was called White Knight Story and it's the main reason I bought my PS3. Final Fantasy XIII could well be a stunning RPG too but White Knight Chronicles is the one I'm more excited about. Dragon Quest VIII by Level 5 was super-awesomely amazing!

"This is the first, big RPG that the PS3 has been waiting for."

Wouldn't that be Fallout 3? Or even Oblivion quite a while back? Unless of course he's talking about system exclusives, in which case I'll stop mocking him :).

"Didn't Level 5 develop Dragon Quest: Journey of the Cursed King? If it's anything like that, I want it!"

Yep, but it's probably better if you use Dark Cloud/Chronice and Rogue Galaxy as your guideposts as they are both Level 5 'doing their own thing', whereas DQ8 was them very much sticking to the DQ formula with a couple of their own trademarks (item combining, and the overall level of polish) thrown in.
But hey, both Dark Chronicle and Rogue Galaxy were awesome anyway!
