Warriors Orochi 2 to get sequel News

PlayStation 2 Xbox 360 News by Ellie Gibson

22 May, 2008

Koei has announced a sequel to Warriors Orochi is coming to PS2 and Xbox 360 this autumn.

The first game, you may recall, saw the Serpent King Orochi kidnapping both the dynasty warriors and samurai warriors, who ultimately defeated him. Warriors Orochi 2 follows the adventures of a new group of fighters as they attempt to stop him making a comeback.

It'll feature several storylines, including ones set in the kingdoms of Wu, Wei and Shu and one which will reveal some of the Serpent King's secrets. There's also a Dream mode that'll have a separate plot.

Other new features will include a two-player Versus mode with four different types of match, including Tag Team. There will be more than 90 playable fighters including new ones based on characters from Chinese and Japanese history.

The announcement comes as Koei reveals more than 1.5 million copies of Warriors Orochi have now been sold. The game was released on PS2 and Xbox 360 last year, with PC and PSP versions following a few months later. Read Dave's review to find out why he thought it fell a little short.

Here's hoping the sequel shakes things up a bit when it's released in Europe this September.

Wait, Warriors Orochi 2 to get sequel? That means 3 is coming out without 2? Or was it *gasp* a mistake in the headline?

Anyway, I loves me some Warriors action so I'm looking forward to this. Although I would've prefered Orochi: Empires.

This is awesome news. Warriors Orochi is the greatest crowd melee grinder there is and like Dr Pepper, it's criminally misunderstood.

I second that laersrule. Dr Pepper and Warriors Orochi. A fine combo.

What does Warriors Orochi do differently to Dynasty Warriors? I've never played WO but am in the mood for some epic weapon swinging so could be tempted..

It's more the fact that it's a "greatest hits" of the Dynasty and Samurai Warriors series', plus you can merge weapons to create super weapons, and have special optional objectives that power up things like your charge attack level. Plus you have 4 attack buttons so there is depth if you want it, but Square on it's own will still do it :P

You also get to take 3 characters into battle and switch whenever you like. All in all, if you want a Warriors game it's probably the best one to have in your collection, plenty of characters and factions.

Cool. The last game of this type I played was DW4 so I think it's about time I delved again. Tried ninety-nine nights but I wasnt terribly gripped by it..

WO is a bit like the mad uncle of DW. A loopy plot and timeline mash-ups are the order of the day.

I'm playing the PSP version at the moment and it's very good, nice and bashy with a great weapon fusing system. My only word against it is that by giving you three characters you somehow feel obligated to use them all during a battle, even the wanky ones.

I'm currently knocking seven shades of shitzu out of everyone with a red bar as Sun Ce, who's excellent, unfortunately he's tag-teamed with a pair of SW sluggers that are not much fun.

Why no PS3 version I wonder?

I have to agree with FladgeMangle, I always end up using a duff character for a third of the time to ensure they level up at the same rate as the others, despite being useless. Although most get better later on.

I'm guessing Koei didn't want to port the 360 version of WO to PS3, probably since you can just play the PS2 version anyway. They seem to only be releasing ones you can't play with backwards compatibility, which is crazy considering new PS3s don't have it.

I guess Koei realised that a PS3 version wouldnt look that much better than the PS2 version which would take 1/4 the time to develop, so decided it wasnt worth the effort vs. the cost..

Assuming that's not flamebait, I would have thought KOEI would have had an eye on all those 40gb PS3 owners, especially after Dynasty Warriors 6.

Where now for the franchise I wonder? Surely DW7 would be yet another re-telling of the three kingdoms saga and even I'm not enamoured enough to want that. The Orochi side story is far too silly to make a decent dynasty (sorry) of it's own.

As much as I love the series (DW, SW, WO) I really feel that they need to add one feature; Online play - Co-op and against each other.
Especially with the empires series; Imagine having the basic Empires format, but each piece of land was owned by another player - And if you wanted to take that piece of land, you'd have to fight them; They'd have to be present.
