Wallace and Sonic on XBLA tomorrow

Also, Puzzle Quest discounted for Goldies.

Major Nelson has confirmed that tomorrow's Xbox Live Arcade releases will be Wallace & Gromit Episode 2 and Sonic & Knuckles. Ampersand city.

The second part of Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures, titled The Last Resort, will set you back 800 points (£6.80 / €9.60). Check out our review of part one to get an idea what to expect from the episodic Telltale romp.

Meanwhile, 400 points (£3.40 / €4.80) will nab you the XBLA version of SEGA's 1994 Megadrive platformer Sonic & Knuckles.

Also worthy of note on the XBLA Marketplace this week is a week-long 50 per cent discount for Gold Live members on the puzzle RPG classic, Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords. You can now pick it up for 400 points - that's actually a third of the original 1200 point asking price.

Read our review of the PSP and DS original to find out why it's subsequently been released on every format ever, including the 3DO and the Atari Jaguar. Probably.

    I'm very tempted by Sonic and Knuckles...although its Beatles Rock Band day too!

    Puzzle Quest is a fantastic game - I'd advise anyone that can, to grab it.
  • viper_h #5 2 years ago

    Sonic & Knuckles, or Sonic 3 & Knuckles?
  • altitude2k #6 2 years ago

    Still not Sonic CD though, is it...

    No! Its Sonic & Knuckles. Can nobody read these days?
  • WinterSnowblind #11 2 years ago

    I like that you can connect it up to the other games, old school style. The game can only be played as Sonic 3 & Knuckles. But they ruined the menu's for Sonic 3, completely removing the save system and the level select..

    That wasn't a huge issue for Sonic 3, but if there's no level select here they've pretty much ruined the game. You NEED to be able to go back to get all the emeralds, not to mention the fun of just being able to replay the game with Hyper Sonic unlocked from the start.

    "The game can only be played as Sonic 3 & Knuckles. But they ruined the menu's for Sonic 3"

    It doesn't really matter now, does it? You can save Sonic 3 anywhere; replay; do whatever.
  • altitude2k #13 2 years ago

    @muscleblade I think you'll find what I said in my statement is actually correct. Therefore I can read, so you are in fact wrong. I'd rather be illiterate than be stupid...
  • Hobo #14 2 years ago

    Hadn't realised the four (as of tomorrow) Sonic games on the Marketplace were all 400pts each, had just assumed they were all gonna be 800pts. Good pricing i think!

    Oh, and bravo Muscleblade for completely missing the idea of altitude2k's post!

    @miiiguel
    Save states don't allow you to go back with Chaos Emeralds in hand.
  • Darren #16 2 years ago

    Strange the way Xbox 360 owners have to pay for the privilege of having discounts, i.e. these 50% savings are only available to paying Gold subscribers. Seems... wrong somehow. :?
  • Hobo #17 2 years ago

    What's odd about it? If you're paying for the Gold membership, you get better discounts than those that don't. It's hardly the first time this sort of thing has been put into practice.
  • Toothball #18 2 years ago

    @Darren:

    Most people actually pay for the gaming services and such that Live has to offer, and discounts like this are a happy extra. I can't imagine anyone would pay for Live solely to get money off random games, as unless you end up buying everything they discount it's probably not worth the subscription.

    I like these sales as I feel as if I'm getting something back from subscribing. I pay for Live regardless of deals like this, so when a game I want appears for half price it's a great opportunity to save some points.

    I'm not sure I can resist an 800 point discount on Puzzle Quest though, despite my reservations about its mechanics.

    I thouth you asked a question already answered in the article. So stupid of me. I appologize .
  • altitude2k #20 2 years ago

    @muscleblade That's ok, you're forgiven. Isn't it great when people get along?
  • Darkflight #21 2 years ago

    Wallace and Sonic sounds like a great game
  • muscleblade #22 2 years ago

    @altitude2k

    Agreed. Sonic CD should definently get an XBLA release too btw.
  • WinterSnowblind #23 2 years ago

    I don't see why anyone would want Sonic CD over Sonic 3 & Knuckles, which is easily the best in the series.
    But yeah, having Sonic CD come sometime later would be great too.
  • miiiguel #24 2 years ago

    "I don't see why anyone would want Sonic CD over Sonic 3 & Knuckles"

    Me! For the single reason I've never played Sonic CD. :}
  • Hobo #25 2 years ago

    The reason people would want Sonic CD over Sonic & Knuckles is surely pretty obvious? In that if you owned a Mega Drive, the chances are if you've only played one of them, Sonic CD would be unplayed by a pretty huge majority.
  • Fallen_Angel #26 2 years ago

    Hate to tell you this, but I was of the same opinion of Sonic CD, until I finally played it on Sonic Gems Collection. Compared to S3&K it is a bit meh.
  • wittynic #27 2 years ago

    The save game function wasnt neccesary to get all the emeralds - it was perfectly possible to get them all on the first run through of Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Each act had 1-3 super rings. You just had to be good at the special stages.
  • Hobo #28 2 years ago

    Having picked up all three original games today having seen the price, i only played Sonic 3...and the 360 d-pad or stick is HORRIFIC for the bonus games :(
  • Ryze #29 2 years ago

    Fallen_Angel +1

    Sonic CD's nice to have from a completionists perspective, but it sits in between Sonic and Sonic 2 chronologically, and seems more like an advert for the Mega CD than a serious or groundbreaking Sonic sequel.

    In terms of quality, it'd say it's not as good as either Sonic or Sonic 2. The level design is awful. Too much stopping and faffing. The end of zone bosses are very poor, and the game is much too easy.

    It does have some great gameplay ideas and some snazzy graphics, though. It's a cool game. The bonus stages could have been great, but they're way too jerky and fiddly to control - considering I was playing Mario Kart on my cousin's SNES in the years before picking this up. It's still a great candidate for an XBLA release, however, as all of the Sonic games were much better than most other platform games by default.

    Sonic 3 & Knuckles combined is a fantastic example of the 90s platform game. It's marvellous. If you've not played Sonic 3, or Sonic & Knuckles, then wait and play them combined.

    Excellent games.

    @Hobo

    I found exactly the same thing, really put me off the game as I thought not being able to get any emeralds would make it boring....

    I must have kept trying the first stage in the bottom left corner of the first act though around 15 times then it suddenly clicked - you need to push the analogue stick whichever way you want to move quite firmly and allow for a slight lag to the movement applied to your character on the screen (i.e. move the direction before you get to the end of a square on the sphere).

    Worked well.
