UT2K7 now UT3

On Xbox 360 too, woo.

Unreal Tournament 2007 has been renamed Unreal Tournament 3 and will be available on Xbox 360 too, the publisher confirmed at its Midway Gamer's Day in Las Vegas this week. Mind you, we'd have been more surprised if Epic Games - of Gears of War fame - weren't producing a 360 version.

It will be developed alongside previously announced PC and PS3 versions and is due for release sometime this year. Midway was unavailable for comment, although goodness knows what they would've said anyway. "We're sorry we didn't invite you," perhaps. Gits.

Unreal Tournament 3 will be the fourth game in the series, bizarrely. We expect the name change has got a lot to do with being built on the Unreal Engine 3 technology, which is proving to be a huge middleware hit with other developers, most recently Square Enix.

Expect ladles-full of saucy next-gen graphics poured on to all of the usual multiplayer modes, along with voice-controlled AI and player controlled vehicles. Perhaps the most interesting new feature to the game is the Conquest mode, which will be a battle for up to eight teams on maps up to three times the size of Deathmatch and Onslaught equivalents.

Pop your head round Eurogamer TV's door to check out the Unreal trailer from the Leipzig Game Convention last August.

the year suffix was always stupid - glad they dumped it

    who would have thought, eh?
  • asphaltcowboy #3 5 years ago

    Ah well, it's on 360, cool :)

considering that the engine and such already works on the 360, wouldn't that mean that they just have to port models, skins, maps, etc.? aka 10 mins of copy & paste?

It would take a massive turnaround to pull this franchise out of the depths of hell that it descended to. I can't believe how they fucked up this franchise. :/
  • Pablo2k5 #6 5 years ago

Some time this year???! By the time this game comes out I won't give a shit anymore...
  • AFX #7 5 years ago

    Hmm, most confusing, UT, UT2003, UT2004 and UT3... O.o
  • JavaJawaUK #8 5 years ago

All hail UT . . . I'll get it for PC, but it's nice to hear that Sony won't have a monopoly with UT3 on the consoles.
  • DUFFKING #9 5 years ago

Erm, UT2003 was rubbish, but UT2004 was really the complete package and rescued the whole thing somewhat.

/hopes the characters aren't midget sized anymore
  • Yossarian #10 5 years ago

wait, did the PS3 just lose an exclusive?
  • rare_uk #11 5 years ago

If they don't implement the dodge on the console as well as it is on PC, then I won't be buying it.

I found dodging hard on the old xbox when I jumped from UT2K4

    GTIV, Resi5, VF5, VT3, UT3, Assasins Creed..

    MGS4? DMC4?

    PS3+Exclusive=Scotch Mist?
  • JediMasterMalik #13 5 years ago

lol Since when was VT3 an exclusive, hell since when were Resi 5 and GTA IV exclusives? UT3 was never an exclusive as it was always coming to PC.
  • smoothn00dle #14 5 years ago

Epic don't fav Exclusive. The more platform the more game sold, provides Epic can convert games to different platform with reasonable cost.

JediMasterMalik in 'PS3 losing another exclusive' damage control shocker
  • mortiz #16 5 years ago

    Second half of 2007? Puh...

And no, the XBox 360 and PC versions won't be the same since the XBox 360 won't support the Direct3D 10 stuff. The PC version will probably have a few more fancy effects.
  • symmetry #17 5 years ago

I expect they dropped the 2007 because it will now be out in 2008 :)
  • Tomo #18 5 years ago

Can't help feeling it's just going to be UT with shinier graphics. Just like the other two. Still, that's a damn fine game so perhaps I'm moaning for little reason.
  • ph101 #19 5 years ago

Never a fan of this. Didn't play right. Sorry. Conquest however does sound like a great idea ! Potential..

Considering that the target demographics of UT and the 360 largely overlap (gun crazy 13 year old Americans that can't appreciate good art direction) it's actually quite strange it isn't a 360 exclusive...
  • jimlad #21 5 years ago

the thing that made ut2004 good was the modding potential, hopefully there will be plenty of amazing mods for ut3 also

    My dear, dear boy....

I would be excited about its arrival on the 360,but I really hate the Unreal games,I like shooters with at least some sort of tacked on story, rather than random gun fight after random gun fight with no real aim to it all.

It actually has a tacked on story... just look at the latest trailer. :)

    @JediMasterMalik
When they say exclusive they mean "console exclusive" and we know that years now. The point is that I had heard the same thing ( UT2007) being a PS3 exclusive even thought I knew theer was no chance Epic wouldn't bring that out on the 360 like I guess you knew it too ;) ( and not just for GoW results ) Any way. The point is that we all hope for that game to be awesome and I know it's more than promising from developers like themselves and with a history of the kind on UT franchise :) ( sorry if I don't make sence again but I have to get ready and go out and I'm saying that to people that will start talking shit again that I make no sence. )

    GoW? Maybe you missed it.
  • Bitkari #27 5 years ago

This makes sense, as they'll be helping the association of unreal engine 3 with this re-brand.

Can't wait to see the tools for this thing.

  • Rambaldi #28 5 years ago

    @Jedi

OK, let's put it this way: last gen Sony had VF, VT, Resi4, Guitar Hero and a major head start with GTA. This time round they loose ground with ALL the above AND others like UT3 and Assasins Creed. That and there's rumours around MGS4 and DMC4.

Sony are loosing the edge when it comes to console exclusivity: FACT
  • davisorle #29 5 years ago

    @Rambaldi
You know it's sad bad true!
  • BadBoyBonner #30 5 years ago

After the success of Gears they were never going to resist releasing this for the 360
  • spongebob #31 5 years ago

rdexter hits the nail (and Rambaldi) in the head.

Everyone who follows the industry knows the whole exclusivity game has changed. MS rules what is left of it, sure, but no one should be that surprised if we see games changing from exclusive to multi. If PS3 starts to sell well, the trend will become even more obvious.
  • Rambaldi #32 5 years ago

/wonders who let the kids get hold of a hammer

Let's put it another way: as I LOVE UT and haven't had chance to play the last two versions on PC I was seriously considering a PS3. Sale lost.
