UK charts: Splinter Cell Conviction is top

Episodes from Liberty City up there too.

Ubisoft's new Splinter Cell: Conviction game has topped the UK all-formats chart. The game is only available on Xbox 360 for the moment, with the PC release due at the end of April.

Conviction's arrival pushed last week's chart-topper Just Dance into second ahead of standalone Grand Theft Auto IV add-on pack Episodes from Liberty City, which was finally released on PC and PS3 last Friday. The PS3 version accounted for 90 per cent of sales. (The Episodes content is also available via digital distribution, which isn't covered by Chart-Track's figures.)

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 was fourth, Wii Fit Plus fifth and Just Cause 2 sixth. Wii Sports Resort, Pokemon SoulSilver, Modern Warfare 2 and FIFA 10 rounded out the top 10.

Well deserved, this game is great.
  • captain_Carl #2 2 years ago

Not half bad, seems like a good top 10 for once
  • Eraysor #3 2 years ago

Glad to see Just Dance knocked off the top. Also, I really wish Steam and other similar services would release their sales figures as I imagine more PC games are sold that way than in shops. I bought Episodes on Steam, for example.
  • matrim83 #4 2 years ago

Splinter cell isnt that good. The MP is certainly fun. SP is pretty average though.

I aggree matrim83 , the single player is so meh it's unbelievable. What's with all the daytime and brightly lit levels? And were Ubi really trying to make every other level a bit rubbish, every good level is followed by a rubbish one. Deniable ops is much better though.

Good to see Just Dance knocked off the top by a top top game
  • Shinetop #7 2 years ago

Watered down version of brilliant original sells like hotcakes. That spells great success for the undoubtedly mediocre X-COM shooter. Thanks, video gamers!

i think thts the lowest ive ever seen MW2 since launch. maybe the average joe does keep an eye on what goes on in the games industry. hopefully it'll drop even lower next week, but given MW2's history, bobby kotick will most likely blame it on a glitch
  • Shinetop #9 2 years ago

@teh9182: In that same vein, I wonder how many people who love it have ever played the previous games.
  • jag10 #10 2 years ago

"The Episodes content is also available via digital distribution, which isn't covered by Chart-Track's figures".

wonder if GTA would be top if these figures were taking into account.
  • miiiguel #11 2 years ago

"Conviction is an excellent game IMO, but then a lot of people criticising it haven't even played it. "

This. It's amazing this "internet opinion", it creates its own strong opinions based, mostly, on rumours; gossip; and "u Tube".
  • Shinetop #12 2 years ago

I see. So only opinions you agree with are true, the rest are just based on gossip and youtube videos?
  • matrim83 #13 2 years ago

Just like dismissing other people's opinion by simply assuming that they havent played the game?

I am on the second last mission in SP and there hasnt been a single moment till now that makes me think its anything but a really average game. That escape from the burning building is the classic image of a dumbed down game. Just run around pressing Y. Dont even bother aiming cause if you could aim you certainly wouldnt be playing this drivel.

Worse I am about to finish the game in just about 5 hours.

/Cue the food is awful and in such small portions joke.

You can check my profile for achievements if you still dont believe me.

I've played and loved all the other Splinter Cells, and I think Conviction is very good, it's a different direction, but a good one none the less, but then I like being a ruthless murdering bastard as I can't do those things to people who sit next to me on public transport even though I'd really, really like to.
  • miiiguel #15 2 years ago

@ shinetop: What you mean? I'm expressing no opinion on a game I haven't played. But it is very weird to ear someone tell us so elequoently how good or bad (beacuse it's always soooo good, or soooo bad) a game is, and then realise that said person never actually played it.

About Splinter Cell, I can't tell, I haven't played nor I'm interested in. That wasn't the point.

No, but you're singlehandedly dismissing every negative opinion on SC here as "not based on actually having played the game", but you're saying no such thing about the (possibly equally baseless, there's no way to tell) positive opionions on said game.

I m of the opinion that the latest SC game is certainly more fun than I would have been led to expect based on the opinions of others.

That is of course just another opinion to add to the mix! The sad truth is that only your own opinion is going to count, and whether you would felt that the game is too dumbed down or having enough fun factors in it. The other thing to consider is that yes undeniably Ubi had made the latest game more mass appeal and thus the hardness and going over and over the difficult challenges are changed.

Plays more like a shooter, but I still have a hard time in some challenging areas and in final analysis, I would only recommend to people to rent it as 5 to 8 hours for SP is pretty short. Especially if you are not keen on the other features that really adds value such as co op (variety of options more so than SP) or deniable ops.

Not a bad game but also wont call it the best yet.
  • miiiguel #19 2 years ago

@ Shine: no not all, but I know for a fact that some are making opinions whitout playing the actual game, and my post was about "internet opinion" in general (go to that dot games review on the front page and you'll also see lots of ppl saying the reviewer is wrong because they know better, small detail: they didn't play the game yet).
Anyway, you like factualess opinons, I don't.

And if you think this is yet another "love-this_game"; "hate-this_game", you're wrong, I say it again I have no intetions of getting Splinter Cell but I don't know the game, I just think Tom Clancy is a douche.

    Hmmmm. Cavia is the developer.

Deserving of the top spot imo, call it what you like, i bet MOST of the people who bought it are really enjoying it.
  • muscleblade #22 2 years ago

I havent played Conviction other than the demo, but many of my friends say its fantastic especially in co-op so my opinion is based on that. Thats enough imo. I think i will play it sometime but too many games come out all the time. And even if its a great game its not very exiting in that its nothing very different form other games in the same genre.
  • muscleblade #23 2 years ago

    @sfp_noodle

Its obviously because almost every gamer with a 360, PC or PS3 already own the game.
  • icematt12 #24 2 years ago

Hunter and Infiltration are awesome experiences, although the plots seemed to have gone all metal gear (as in, what the hell is going on here). Especially co-op
  • Shinetop #25 2 years ago

Anyway, you like factualess opinons, I don't.

Nice strawman you put up there!

Now excuse me while I decide who hasn't played a game yet based on what their opinion of it is.
  • makeamazing #26 2 years ago

As others have said, it is time now for the charts to include downloads such as steam. Perhaps then people could get a better idea of what games are selling the best etc.

Playing Lost and Damned on PS3 and its pretty fun at the moment. It does feel more interesting than the original GTA (which I have still yet to finish).
  • miiiguel #27 2 years ago

I don't think that will ever be possible unless the network owners make their numbers public, which I don't think it'll happen in a near future.
  • Monkey_Puncher #28 2 years ago

Whether Fester Shinetop has played it neither here or there, the review comments section showed that a lot of people are deciding whether they like the game or not without ever playing it.

Splinter Cell is one of my favourite series, I played the hell out of the previous games both on and offline. At first play I wasn't convinced by the new style the game was going for, it looked great but the more action orientated stuff wasn't selling me. But I have to admit after a long session of it on Friday, my mind was changed, it really is a great game, though not with out it's problems.

The moments when you're truly stalking the AI from the shadows and making sure you don't get detected are some of the best I've had in the Splinter Cell franchise. Hopefully whatever they do in the next game, they'll take the good ideas from this one and make it an even better and more well rounded game.

    @ makeamazing

Download will be tracked on PC from sometime this year.

Conviction....what a let down. I am a die hard SC fan and this is utter tripe. Also what happend to the multiplayer, this used to be great, 1 v1 is lame. Yea appeal to the masses but dont fuk up for the fans of old. I can just but hope that the old school mode will come as DLC. I wont hold my breath. UBI just dont fuk up GRAW.
  • Shinetop #31 2 years ago

[sigh] Stop shoving your opinion down everyone's thoats please Shinetop. You don't like it - we get it. We got it from your first comment. If you don't like it, don't buy it - There was a demo after all..

My first comment was about me not liking it. That was the only comment I made here about me not liking it. The other comments are about something else entirely. I'm sorry if you can't comprehend that.
  • DoctorFouad #32 2 years ago

why they do not provide the number of games sold ? like media create do in japan ?
  • ronuds #33 2 years ago

Looks like there were more people who didn't like previous SCs and were willing to give something new a try?

They changed the formula for a reason - sales must've been crap. From what I've heard, the game isn't "dumbed down" just because it doesn't play exactly like other Splinter Cells. There are some VERY difficult sections and challenges in the game. Get over yourselves, please.

Maybe if there were more "Splinter Cell Diehard" they wouldn't have, but obviously there aren't enough of you to keep the series the way it was. Now go cry to someone who cares because the people loving the game certainly do not..

Pokemon would (probably) be on top if it was the one game.

Graphics, Ai, Challenge, Length, Games Modes, Sound, Animation, Lighting, Controls...all beat previous SC games. Play this on 'Realistic' setting and you'll have to be more stealth and sneaky to get through. Conviction plays better stealth/sneak/assassination then any previous SC and MGS (inc 4) games. The game is approx 7-8 hrs long on single player, you can play how you want by stealth of sneak attacks or both. Conviction also gives you a wider scope then previous installments on how you deal with the situation then previous SC games, also gadgets are more minimal, but more focused on proper use not just used as gimmicks. Also CO-OP is quality and adds another 4-6hrs gameplay.

People who slag this as they think it's been dumbed down have simply not played it. It's faster and more fluid game now. Killing is now part of the game, but with caution and planning and stealth still a big part (esp on Realistic). Once experienced this, previous SC stealth games played do feel slow and cumbersome.

Splinter Cell fans of previous should not deny this simply of change, they well could be missing one of the best in the series.

Scored a total of 87/100 on Metacritic t by 48 individual reviews.

    90(+) to 100% scored by 23 reviews
    80 to 89% scored by 25 reviews
70 to 79 % scored by 3 reviews (inc the 7/10 here at Eurogamer)

It's nice to see that Final Fantasy XIII is still in the charts, somewhat anyway. It's a great game that I think too many reviewers bashed for being different from the other games. I haven't played any of Final Fantasies, so I'm unaffected by raging fanboyism when I say that it's brilliant and a lot of fun. I recommend to anyone who likes RPGs.

I need to pick up Splinter Cell at some point too, once I get enough spare cash together.
  • ryanbreck #37 2 years ago

I'll add to this debate by admitting that I am precisely the "dumbed-down" gamer that SC: Conviction appeals to. I played the first few levels of the PS2 era games and purchased Double Agent only to get completely stuck on the second level (the first proper level, effectively). I know others in the same boat as me and I also know people who love the games. They have a steep learning curve but are, I'm told, very rewarding. I'm about halfway through Conviction and really enjoying it. Hoping it will also allow me to go back into Double Agent with a little more confidence.

Criticism of the game in terms of level design or memorable moments etc I guess is reasonable. I personally feel that some of the views here are a bit harsh, but I am still partially undecided, not hugely blown away so far, and inexperienced in the franchise, so perhaps it's all fresher to me than to others. Criticism of the game in terms of being dumbed down seems wrong though. Having seen others play on the tougher difficulties and in the co-op campaign, the same depth and difficulty is there if you want it. Dumbing down suggests they have chopped off the top end of the game. Instead they have only lowered the bottom end a little to make it more accessible to someone like me, and I feel they should be commended.

Anything coming out next week, or will Just Dance be back in number one again like it has been doing for what seems like forever now...?
  • coolbritannia #39 2 years ago

Go Forza III, been out donkeys years and is consistently selling well. Selling better than FF and GOWIII, sweet.
  • Soton4084 #40 2 years ago

I purchased Episode from Liberty City (disk version) the other day and am really enjoying it so far. I've mainly been playing through the Lost and the Damned, but have also dabled a bit in the Ballad of Gay Tony. Both have storylines which are more interesting than Niko's and I look forward to trying the multiplayer. Hopefully SC: Conviction will eventually come out on PS3, as it certainly looks like a good addition to the series.
