Mechner making new Prince of Persia?

Evidence of Forgotten Sands mounts.

Ubisoft appears to be busy developing a brand new Prince of Persia game.

The evidence starts with a trademark filed by series creator Jordan Mechner, claiming the name Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands (via superannuation).

This was backed up today by the CV of Marc-Antoine Senecal, a character modeller at Ubisoft, who claims to have been "working on the new Prince of Persia" from "August 2009 - Present (3 months)" (also via superannuation).

Ubisoft has not responded our request for comment.

That Ubisoft Montreal is working on Prince of Persia will shock nobody. After all, the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time film - starring a buff Jake Gyllenhaal - will be released next May, and Ubisoft embarked on a fresh new direction for the franchise last autumn, after tailing the former trilogy neatly off.

Head over to our Prince of Persia review to see how it fared.

I never completed PoP reboot, but I really wish I had done, I quite enjoyed that game.

I liked the last PoP game (especially the gorgeous graphics) but it felt very "on-rails." I would love to see a game with the same art-style but far more open and non-linear.
And some of those orbs were bloody hard to find.

Oh, and I hope they fix the combat this time. That was awful. Something in the middle-ground between Emo Prince's massive move list and the simpler small-group encounters of SoT would be nice.
And get rid of those annoying insta-death blobs during wall-runs. MAN they were annoying.

I really liked the last PoP game aswell I'll admit that it was far too easy and the fights were pretty poor but it was so pretty to look at and the platforming felt epic. Not sure how I would feel about it now after playing Drake's Fortune

I really loved the last PoP game as well, it's probably in my top 5 games of the past year. I loved the combat and the platforming, although a bit more variety in the combat and a bit more challenge in the platforming wouldn't go amiss. I agree about losing the insta-death black blob bits though.

It may not have been difficult, but it just put such a huge inane grin across my face all the while I was playing it. The graphics, the epic scale, the wonderful feeling of flowing around the environments. It was just joy encapsulated for me.

The last Prince of Persia wasn't on my radar until I picked it up for £17.99 off play.com - in hindsight I'd happily have paid full price, was easily one of my favourite games of 2008.

Jordan Mechner worked on The Sands of Time. That is the only Prince of Persia (from Ubisoft) that he worked on, and it happens to be my favourite. I expect this to be good.

With "sands" in the title and Jordan Mechner on board I can only imagine it's a return to the former style of the SoT trilogy, which is great news, but I also loved the new direction that the last game took as well. I hope that they'll resolve the storyline for that at least.

I passed PoP up because I thought it got poor feedback but everyone seems to be saying they liked it! I loved SoT. Worth picking up then?

PoP was ok but had some serious flaws. The amount of back tracking was terrible. Furthermore, I found the map system dreadful too and left me going in the wrong direction time after time. I did like how you could start chatting with whats her face by pulling to left trigger and gaining more story that bit was great helped build a real soul to the game. Furthermore, although beautiful the world ended up being to linear I found and there was too much restriction on where you could go. I'm not sure I would welcome another although this being ubisoft they will run it into the ground with all their licence's.

needs not to be a movie tie-in please.

Does this mean they're already rebooting the franchise again?? This is why I hate "to be continued" endings, as you never know if they're going to bother finishing the story off, which seems to be the case with the last game here.

Still, Sands of Time is still by far the best PoP game in my book, so getting Mechner back on board seems like a good way to guarantee the next game is excellent. The last one was pretty good, aside from the dull combat system and the lack of a decent ending to the story.

Sounds like more PoP less BG&E. I did enjoy the last PoP a hell of a lot though.

because the last game didnt suck enough balls the designers thought to themselves - "there's plenty of balls left to suck out there, lets get cracking!?"
a real shame. the Sands of time, the first remake was awesome and the art etc of the recent game was impeccable, let down by shit game design.

Quite liked the last PoP. But it was nothing compared to Sands of Time. Literally a barren story compared to that. Gameplay bored me to tears also. Nice graphics and good (if not appropriate) voice acting.
