Ubi boss describes new Assassin's episode

Ezio takes on Templars in Rome, plus MP.

Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot has said that the Assassin's Creed episode mentioned last month picks up after ACII and takes place in Rome.

Speaking in a conference call to mark the publisher's latest financials, Guillemot said it sees the return of Ezio Auditore. "But this time, he will strike directly at the heart of the Templar Order in Rome," he said (thanks GameSpot).

"In addition to this full new adventure, players will be able to challenge their friends in a very innovative assassination multiplayer."

Ubisoft has previously said to expect the new Assassin's Creed instalment - which is not Assassin's Creed III - before the end of March 2011. ACII has now sold eight million units, the publisher added this week.

pft, you could see a little bit of Rome in the original, clearly they had the entire city ready to go and it was in AC2 already, then cut it out at the last minute to sell back to us.

So its a installment and not AC3.

This reminds me of Tales from Liberty City. It wasn't a sequel to GTAIV but an installment (episode)

Why not call it an expansion pack like Dragon Age Origins: Awakening.

I assume AC3 is a couple of years off so in order for Ubisoft to meet its new mandate by releasing their top franchises regularly they came up with basically an expansion pack to hold us over. I think I'll wait and see before spending my money.

So this is a whole new retail game. A rushed one to earn some easy money on the sucess of AC2 of course.

I loved AC2, but I don't really want more Italy. This seems more like an expansion trying to be a full game. Will buy when cheap though.

I think, Muscleblade, you misunderstand dudefathers humour. He was channelling the rage of a thousand trolls and the new trend of complaining about developers wanting to get paid for the work they do by charging for DLC.

Pretty sure he knows that the new title will be a separate game.

It'd take a lot more than one shameless cash-in to do an Acti. Seems AC2 is a 1k game forever now, so I'll happily trade it rather than hold on for substantial achievement-adding DLC.

    @Vice.Destroyer

LOL. Yeah i can see that now.

I can't say this is totally unexpected.

AC3 would probably be at least 2 years development so lets say earliest, a xmas 2012 release. Ubisoft are doing the sound business thing here in my opinion.
    - Full retail game -> muchos money
    - Re-using multiple assets from the first Ezio game -> lower dev costs and faster time to market - same building gfx, same people models, etc - just tweaked a little
    - Familiar setting -> no need to write a whole new background story with a large plot, just effectively tack a couple of chapters onto the existing one.
    - Customer interest -> Keeps AC in the mind of the customers and of course keeps the PR machine greased.
    - 2012 release is potentially dangerous -> Noone knows if Natal or PS3 Wand will really extend the life of these consoles, they are casual player focussed and they aren't known for swallowing every piece of DLC, avatar rubbish and huge game collections. 2012 is when I imagine they will be either announcing the next generation of consoles. So AC2 part 2 released 2011 then kick start the AC3 machine. By the time they know what they are going to do they will know if they should start a 360/PS3 dev cycle and probably be one of the console swansongs or start looking at a new engine for a new console dev cycle.

well Im delighted to have more Italy. And ROme is an amzing place. Be very interested to do some assassin missions there :D and besides Ezio is a great character.

The thought of some Assassin's Creed multiplayer has my attention, I will be interested to see what they do with that.

Anyone else get the feeling that one of the multiplayer modes are likely to be based on the games Ezio plays at the Carnival? Or checkpoint races?

Assassination race would be an interesting mode, everyone plays as assassin and the first to locate and kill the target wins. Or co-op missions where multiple assassins must work together to assassinate multiple targets before the alarm is raised. There's certainly a lot of scope for some very interesting multiplayer modes, but I can't shake the feeling that Ubisoft are likely to deliver something insubstantial that mostly disappoints, like the "corrupted" Forli memory.
