Heh have only seen this review now but have to agree 7 is a travesty. A 10/10 game if ever there was one.

I loved this game but I think 8 out of 10 is not harsh. I think it may just be touching a 9, but I found combat to be quite poor so 8 is fine with me and still a very good score.

"And this is the first of Planescape Torment's problems, as it cheapens death."

Hmm, talk about 'missing the point'...
  • marilena #5 5 years ago

Man, is this article full of exclamation marks!
  • PedroTheLion #6 4 years ago

I'm getting the feeling that you didn't really "get" this game did you?

"And this is the first of Planescape Torment's problems, as it cheapens death." - Massive LOL

The only weak part about PST is the combat and even that was better than most we see today, I'm fairly certain that to award this masterpiece less than a 9 is a crime in some countries and you will most certainly face the consequences of your irrational actions.

A "7"? You rate the pinnacle of computer gaming a "7"? Man, that IS audacious!
  • monroi133 #8 4 years ago

The whole article is filth. Obviously, the guy who wrote it didn't even bother reading the dialogues and narration or even playing the game. At least 75% of the review is a nutshell which I can read off the cd box or play the game for 30 minutes.

Started playing this again, and just randomly stumbled upon this review for the first time. Shocking, really.

Planescape Torment still tells the most engaging story ever in a video game.
  • Obiwanshinobi #10 3 years ago

You will also discover that you are immortal - every time you are killed you spring back to life. And this is the first of Planescape Torment's problems, as it cheapens death.

    Provocation?

It did get a bit silly at the end when you were ripping off/replacnig your limbs for power upgrades - very, very cool game though
  • uk_john #12 3 years ago

The fact this reviewer kept on talking about 'tons of enemies' to fight, means he has no idea of what this game is all about. It is fair to say though, that his view is not a lonely one and partly explains why Baldur's Gate sold a million plus and this game only sold 400,000 or so.

You have to have an IQ to understand and enjoy this game and some reviewers just don't have enough of it.

Haven't played this game but thought I'd add a comment for the 2010 crowd. :)
  • Mr.DNA #14 2 years ago

Thank fuck games reviews read better nowadays than this utter wank.
  • levitate #15 1 year ago

    @Mr. DNA:

I'm glad to see your grandparents finally let you out of their basement. I suppose you've been locked up for so long you forgot what it feels like to smell fresh air, huh. Well, fear not, I know that once the sun comes out and you actually get the chance to look at it you might regret crawling back down the basement once nightfall sets in.

Loved this - and considering I just bought it online at a whim a couple of weeks ago - 11 years after release - I'd say that vouches for more than just my personal taste. Utterly brilliant from start to finish. 10/10 from me.
Which makes this review kind of funny, especially the part about 'treating death lightly'. But hey, to each their own.
  • czaczi87 #17 1 year ago

What? Seriously did the reviewer play this game? I know that this was written 11 years ago, but c'mon. I only came here because I wanted to see how many points did the best cRPG of all time get from metacritic and I came across this review.

I think this Gestalt guy completely didn't understand the game. He rambles on about combat like it was some kind of h&s. This isn't Diablo where your main aim is to slash monsters, gain XP and powerful equipment. I just love this one: "Why waste hours slaying dozens of monsters or carrying out complicated subquests, when you can get ten times as much XP just by talking to a complete stranger for a couple of seconds?" - Duh, because unlike generic MMORPGs where you click to death monsters for hours just to level up, Planescape: Torment is a very story driven game. Black Isle concentrated on the characters, relationship between them and the outcome of the great journey to find mortality, peace and redemption.

After so many years, I can wholeheartedly say that from all the games ever made Torment offers the best-written characters and story. Many will disagree with me on this one but I really believe that.

As for the technical issues I can say that the graphics in this game survived the longish 12 years, because modders created a patch which allows to play the game in widescreen mode and in high resolution. As this game is 2d and hand drawn it doesn't look bad on my 32" TV. Of course, the music is still astonishing and very unique. Oh and it is funny that the reviewer in the year 2000 had a problem because the voice acting didn't cover all of the dialogues. "Eeer, reading so many words is sooo difficult... and I can't skip cutscenes! I don't want to understand the story I just want to kill monsters and level up! This game is retarded."

You know what is funny? I randomly clicked on one of the other reviews written by this Gestalt guy and I noticed that maybe he doesn't like games with any narrative. He gave the first Mafia 4/10 "Mafia was a great idea and the storyline is brilliant, but we're here to play the game, not admire its narrative structure". - Are you kidding me? Go play pong or pac-man and you won't be bothered with any boring story.

Planescape: Torment is a masterful game and fortunately this reviewer was proven wrong. The only sad thing is that Torment didn't sell that good. That doesn't matter because it will always be considered a diamond in the river of simple shooters and sports games that sell in millions of copies.

Planescape: Torment is my favourite game of all time. There was something so special about this game that I've never experienced since.

That said... The reviewer gave his honest, considered opinion of the game.

I really don't agree with it, but it was his experience. If he missed some of the point it's not inconcievable that others who play the game with a similar mindset will miss the point too and not get the same 10/10 level of enjoyment that I did.

We can't ask for more than an honest opinion of games reviewers, even if we don't agree with them. While it may not be the best written review I've ever read it's far from the worst, and I don't think it's fair to call it a load of wank even if you disagree with the score.
