The Darkness PS3 delayed News

PlayStation 3 Xbox 360 News by Tom Bramwell

25 June, 2007

2K Games has confirmed to Eurogamer that the PlayStation 3 version of The Darkness has been delayed until July in Europe.

Retailers are reporting 20th July, but, despite initially confirming that, 2K has said the current target is simply "July".

The Xbox 360 version is still down for release on 29th June, mind you, and you can read our review of that by clicking on the blue words.

2K's confirmation of the PS3 version's delay comes after retailers updated their listings for the game and were picked up on by bloggers.

Of course, if you're really desperate, you could always import the US version, which is released today - PS3 games being helpfully region-free.

Judging by our recent first impressions, you might well want to, with developer Starbreeze's tentacular comic-clad action winning high praise.

Are there any reasons behind this? This is begining to become expected from PS3 games I'm sure everyone would like to know why the only people getting shafted are european PS3 owners. (Not that I want american XBox360 owners to get shafted.)

Which version is better?

I'm assuming 360 version because that's the version the devs were always showing. But, I don't mind holding out for the PS3 version if someone can confirm that it is superior?

I dont get what is the reason for delay of a few weeks? Cant be localisation as X360 will have the same treatment but released this Friday. Timed exclusivity?

Was planning on getting hold of X360 version anyway for the achievement points!

I was planning on picking up the PS3 version (unless it was markedly inferior) purely because I prefer the PS3 controller for FPS games.

However, with my appetite for this game being whetted (ironically) by videos on the PS3 Network I think I can't be bothered waiting and will pick up the 360 version.

Sorry, Sony.

PS2 games used to come out a week or two before their XBOX (1) counterparts in the days of Sony domination - this was done through a licensing discount on the back of 'leading' for a particular amount of time on Sony's platform.

MS are simply 'getting their own back' now. And good on 'em, Sony truly flattened them last gen.

anyone had any experience with trading in an import game to game/gamestation/blockbuster etc?

i'm tempted to get this from movietyme or summat but i'm fairly certain this will be a "complete then exchange/sell" game for me.

if game/station/blockbuster dont take it then i might leave till uk release.

Any control system that requires a desk is highly annoying IMO.

Oh, apart from driving wheels, cos they rock.
Oh, and maybe the Steel Battalion controller.

But a full-on kb & m for an FPS? Pah! 2 sticks works just great when the game is built around them, and I always maintain "You cannot turn at an infinite rate of speed in real life anyway". The trigger/bumper combo that seems to be prevalent in hardware now is also very good for FPS, meaning you can now do 4 things while moving and turning (6 if you include the "clicks" on the sticks).

There's nothing wrong with controller and FPS - games made for a controller can work well... a game like Halo illustrates this perfectly.
But forcing a PC FPS control scheme on to a controller (PC ports) does often not work perfectly.

Yes, RTS works best with a keyboard and mouse, but a RTS made from the ground up for a controller (like Halo Wars) could work just fine if done right. The problem has been that RTS are PC ports which is hard to do. Battle For Middleearth 2 on 360 worked pretty well though and was perfectly playable.

Surely you must be one of a rare breed. I just can't play FPS games using the PS controller without getting severe hand cramps after just 15mins.

I know Game use barcodes for pricing there products, so imported versions will not be readable (unless for some reason they have used the same barcode worldwide- this is very unlikely).

They will not want to purchase a NTSC version of the game, so if they see it is one, they will not 'trade' it. Even if they do actually work perfectly in PAL regions.

Not that rare... I'm part of that species... The XBox controller is a bit too clunky for me. I know I have dinky hands but still. N64 controller was still all time best tho.

I highly doubt any of them will take in second hand import games. Maybe an independent gaming retailer, but definitely not those three.

I wouldn't trade a game at those places anyway due to the downright insulting trade-in prices. Gamestation used to be ok, but now their trade-ins since being taken over by Game are frankly appalling, just as many people predicted would be the case.

@regarding gamestation import trade ins:

For our local store, import games are fine, as long as they are sold in this country, and will work on the console, so presumably you'll be able to trade the darkness in once it comes out here

might vary from store to store though, but we got NTSC versions of a couple of ps3 games

so Dudefather, you mean as long as they are region free you will accept them? Does this count for PSP games as well?

Or is it just that the checkout assistant who accepted the trade-in, didn't check to see that isn't wasn't PAL?

yeah its fine for psp and DS games too (not umd movies though)

just remembered actually, the BBFC rating also has an impact on this, so assuming the darkness is 18 or 15 rated in this country, that means you may not be able to trade it in, as it wouldn't have the appropriate rating on the box/disc, might be worth a go anyway (not 100% sure on this issue)

and we deliberately allow ntsc games in some cases, rather than in error (99% of the time they wouldn't scan at the till, plus the US rating system is pretty noticeable

I have got both and play both PS3 and 360, well i play the 360 and look at the PSŁ and think where are the fucking games but still. Anyway which ever way you look at it the 360 controller is genius, i have spent whole days playing oblivion and forza 2 and very rarely get any kind of hand cramp. I cant play the PS3 for more than an hour with being in serious pain from that minute peice of shit. Ok i have slightly neandertal hands and frame, but it's just a shite design. I mean anyone who could take the peice of shit that was the ps2 controller and make it worse really needs there head examined.

Good point it is illegal to sell a BBFC rated game without the appropriate stickers labels on the front of box, spine and disc. Therefore illegal to trade an import (you can legally bring in foriegn movies/games providing they do not breach British Law and are for personal use only).

You can actually aim with those limp, dead-zoned analog sticks? O_o

"Ah yes, if I was forced to play an FPS on a joypad- the N64's would be my choice of pad"

The N64 had a terrible pad and anyone who claims otherwise is really kidding themselves. Three prongs? One analog stick? Two buttons? All are terrible ideas and lacking compared to current pads. Take away the third (and useless) prong and all you have is a crappy Dual Shock without rumble, one analog stick and less buttons.

And saying you'd prefer to play a FPS on a pad with only one analog stick and not enough buttons to play any modern FPS is madness!

How about - different people have different tastes? There are plenty of games out there that don't need pads with more buttons than fingers.

And yes I can aim with dual sticks. Personally for a lot of 3rd person games its a godsend to me.

The N64 controller fitted my hands perfectly thats all.

Sure, people do have different tastes (and different sized/shaped hands), but I think the pads of today are much better than past offerings in general. Yes some games don't need all the buttons, but then others do. A pad with many buttons allows both, a pad with few doesn't.

The PS3 and 360 pads are very refined and it's hard to imagine where the pad can go next. They do what they do exceptionally well and are extremely versatile.

From the above discussion I think we can agree that there's no such thing as the ultimate controller design. It's just one of the factors when deciding which console to get or which version of a game in case you have multiple consoles.

For me, the PS2 controller is the best (prefer it over the SIXAXIS because I don't like those triggers) and feels quite comfortable (though I never play for more than a 2 hour stretch as I simply don't have the time anymore). It doesn't really excel in any game type bar maybe fighters but it isn't rubbish for any game type either.

Well actually it has. While it's basic layout hasn't been altered it has been added to in every iteration. The PS2 version had pressure sensitive buttons added while the PS3 has better triggers and motion control. Hence "refinement".

Its so funny te PS3 owners that waited for so long for that console to also be asking in public about importing games now. Ok i know there is nothing at all better for your console but it was really your choise till now. So i really feel not a bit bad about this whole thing. Im even glad to be honest.
