Tekken 5 PS3 goes online
Online battles, leaderboards, etc.
One of the PlayStation 3 Store's best downloadable games is about to get a bit better, Sony said today (well, they used different clichés), with the announcement that Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection will soon receive an update that adds online modes.
"Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection Online", as the game will become known, will allow for ranked and unranked matches through Opti Match, Quick Match, Custom Match and Friend Match options. The game will track all the relevant statistics about each players so you can gain a clear picture of who you're up against, and an online news ticker will keep you abreast of weekly/monthly/overall leaders in the battle to get from "Beginner" rank up to "Dark Lord", so "there will be no doubt about who's King of Iron Fist at any one time", as Sony points out.
Other features of the online update will allow you to communicate through your headset with the person you're due to fight next. There are even a couple of single-player additions: a Practice mode, where you can hone your skills against a dummy, and Survival Mode, where you aim to defeat as many opponents as possible with a limited health bar. You can check out screenshots of the online update in our Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection Online screenshot gallery.
Sony says the update will be made available soon - both as a download for people who have already bought Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, and as a patched full game for people who buy it following the update's release. Sony has yet to clarify whether it will adjust the price, or charge existing owners for the update, but we doubt it. We'll let you know.
Dark Resurrection, originally released on the PSP, is a spruced up version for PS3 owners featuring 1080p graphics, a huge roster of characters, and some of the best beat-'em-up gameplay of the last few years. Goodness know what Rich Leadbetter will make of the changes - he's already said that "Namco has effectively annihilated just about every preconception you might have about budget downloadable games" with the original release, as you'll know if you've read his Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection PS3 review.

And Fight Night works just fine online so there is no reason this shouldn't work.

The Cell actually calculates the order and timings of all buttons in advance. It then just displays a movie of the whole battle.

Just like PSN, it also depends on the game.

Nono I know... Pretty much all of PS2 and PSP games are P2P, the whole PS3 system relies on people setting some servers up themselves, but like you said, there are some, for things like Resistance, Warhawk and Home.
MS set up a lot more servers, so people have to host less games. Some things will always be p2p tho, like voice comms.
EDIT: spelling

Other than FFXI and PSU, what other games aren't P2P?

Someone tell Sony I'd have probably paid £20 for it, they're not ripping us off!

I don't remember asking about PSN. I was talking about Live.
"I'm betting Halo 3 is probably going to be hosted in dedicated servers, for one."
So a possibility of three games in total, maybe, out of everything released so far? Two being online RPGs and one that's not been released yet. I don't think that justifies saying it "depends on the game" when talking about the service as a whole, personally.

Sshhh, don't give them ideas!
@ Aretak & Steroyd:
I was always under the impression that, even beside MMOs, there were select games that used client-server. I've been wrong then. That does make the cost of XBL Gold sound a bit extortionate.

Fight Night 3 was the first game I played after i got my XBL and yeah I was so impressed!!! Loved beating someone up so realistic online
@Darren
PS3 does that completely man.. Xbox live mostly uses its own servers except in some cases according to the game like SeesThroughAll said.
Since I hate Tekken ( sorry guys but I dont like the sparkles when I fight, simply a matter of taste in games
