Mario & Sonic Winter Games revealed

It's coming to Wii and DS later this year.

SEGA has finally unveiled Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, a sequel we knew was coming and a theme we heavily suspected.

Wii and DS are the platforms, and the game is due out towards the end of the year. The actual Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games run from 12th to 28th February, just in case you care.

Wii balance board support will be the biggest addition to the outrageously popular IP, and lend an air of realism to events such as Alpine Skiing. More events are to be announced leading up to release, similarly the beefed-up roster of characters.

There's also improved multiplayer for both platforms, which can be played either co-operatively and competitively.

Otherwise, SEGA, under the watchful eye of Shigeru Miyamoto, will be recycling a proven formula that involves Mario and Sonic and friends competing in Olympic events.

And that, hopefully, will result in a further 10 million worldwide sales.

Head over to Eurogamer TV for the very first Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games trailer.

Inevitable really, given the commercial success of its predecessor.

You never see Sonic and Mario at the paralympics do you?
Who do less able-bodied gamers have to look up to in terms of video game sporting heroes?

I actually think this has more potential. If they get things like snowboarding right then they could be on to a winner.

    Daley Thompson had Tourette's.

This came totally out of nowhere!

Seriously though, I smell a truckload of sales incoming. After the news about SEGA incurring losses, this is what they needed. Too bad they can only do this once every two years (unless they find some other reason for getting Mario and Sonic together, that is).

At JohnnyWashnGo, technically Rayman didn't have any arms or legs, so he may be able to compete.

I still don't get why they use strictly the (fairly bland) Mario and Sonic casts for these games. Why not the Smash cast?

Nevermind Mario Kart, how about SMASH KART! Smash Party, Smash Tennis, For Mash Eat Smash with Cooking Mama, Smash Olympics, Smash Soccer, Smash Soap Opera, Smash Golf, Smash Adventure, Smash Rhianna in the mouth... Surely there's more 'character' in the Smash universe characters? Which can of course include Sonic and friends, and others!

The Mario & Sonic Olympics cast was pretty bland, but Mario sports games generally have very good lineups. Either way, I like the fact that they don't open it up to all Nintendo games. It gives classic Mario enemies like Shy Guy, Boo and Wiggler a bit of time in the spotlight.

Several characters were cut from the first game anyway. Donkey Kong, Goomba, Espio, Big, Cream and a few others. Wouldn't be surprised to see them all here.

Hope there will be balance board support. I'd love to see some minigames similar to the ones in Wii Fit: skiing, snowboarding and ski jumping. I imagine bobsleigh could be fun too.

    >You never see Sonic and Mario at the paralympics do you?

but that'd be cheating - as they're able bodied...

The games have a better to be potentially good in a winter event than a summer one - there's just more gameplay potential there.

Add to it support for the "motionplus" attachment - and maybe balance board.. Might be a winner! (critcially as well as commercially this time)
