Saints Row team not fazed by GTA IV

Eurogamer not able to spell.

Saints Row 2 producer Greg Donovan reckons that his game will be competitive with Grand Theft Auto IV.

"Frankly we wouldn't be releasing this year if we didn't think we could be competitive," he said during a preview event for Saints Row 2, which Eurogamer attended.

"I think co-op is a huge distinguishing factor. Unless they're really holding something - I don't think they are - I think that's a big plus for us."

Saints Row 2 - another openworld game ala GTA - also lets you customise things like cars and what you wear to help build up respect, which in turn unlocks new missions.

It takes place around a decade after the first game and sees you going back to the same, now-bigger and much-changed, city for revenge.

You can read more about that in our Saints Row 2 preview.

Am I the only one around that seems to think the original Saints Row was an utter piece of trash?

    I'm sure you're not

    I quite liked it however

Unless the starship Enterprise is swinging in all guns blazing to upset the Saint's Row, or they just don't intend to release the game at the same time, that'll be FAZED, Tom.

Nope - I'm with you there.

"Am I the only one around that seems to think the original Saints Row was an utter piece of trash?"

Nope... Aside from attrocious tearing (Xbox 360) and bland graphics it was a cliched rip off of the GTA vibe with none of the soul/humour.

The first Saints Row was good fun but felt a bit unfinished in places (bugs aplenty, horrid tearing and disappearing bridges, etc.). Not bad for a first attempt at a GTA clone although the swearing and foul language in the cutscenes got on my nerves quickly. How the sequel will fare against the likes of GTA IV remains to be seen but I'd say it might struggle this time round unless it is absolutely amazing as the first game had no competition. I doubt the addition of co-op will be enough to sell the game on its own.

Do we know that GTA4 doesnt have coop. If it doesnt i will buy Saints Row 2 instead i think. Even Crackdown had coop. Playing this type of 50+ hour game alone just isnt my cup of tea. Imagine Oblivion and Mass Effect in Coop.

Excuse me?! Does GTA IV have no multiplayer at all? Have they regressed?

Saints Row is a highly under-rated game. I'm sure many of its haters (most of you included) probably just played the demo and couldnt stop comparing it to GTA.

Yeah it has tearing issues in places and the frame rate is rather dodgy when being chased by police helicopters at night - but the features it adds onto the 'cloned' gameplay from GTA makes it a much better game imo.

Well personally I couldn't care less if GTA IV doesn't have any multiplayer mode at all (but I suspect it will) as the games have so much stuff to do in the single player mode that I'd have no time for it anyway.

I might get this game if
    A) GTA IV doesn't include online co-op (even if it's in the vein as the co-op in GTA : San Andreas
and B) This game doesn't come out around the time the DLC comes out for GTA IV

GTA IV will bury this game no problem.
  • MrXBob #14 4 years ago

In sales, of course it will bury it. I'm getting GTAIV, but even I can see how overhyped it is. As all the previews have said, its 'just another GTA game' with bits brought in from other sandbox games. Which is fine, but it hardly deserves the hyperbole it's getting.

Saints Row 2, in my opinion, will be a superior game. GTAIV will be fantastic, but all the hate for Saints Row is uncalled for.

Saints Row was really good. The characters and dialogue were not however.

'We gotta show these mutherfukkaz what TIME it is' etc.etc.
