Resistance 2 Review
Fight the good fight.
Version tested: PlayStation 3
In the great console wars of the 21st century, the exclusive first-person shooter is an elite paratrooper regiment, pushing deep behind enemy lines, paving the way for the long-term advances, claiming back enemy territory and banging the propaganda drum every step of the way. Resistance: Fall of Man, launched with the PS3, wasn't quite up to the job. It was a good soldier, but not an inspirational leader.
So when you fire up Resistance 2, you may find yourself checking the box to make sure you've got the right disc. It's so different to its predecessor in so many beneficial ways that it's almost an entirely new game. Picking up the story of Nathan Hale, a US soldier fighting back against the mutated Chimera menace in an alternate history where World War II never happened, it wastes no time transporting him from the rubble of Britain, via an unscheduled stop in Iceland, to the new battlefront: America.
It's a change of scenery that seems to have inspired developer Insomniac. As amusing as it was to begin in Grimsby and Manchester, there was always a suspicion these alien suburban locations didn't click with the Californian devs. The result was a grey game, made up of monochrome rat-runs through scenery that - cathedrals and other controversial landmarks aside - could have come from any documentary about the Blitz. Here you're dropped into rich, realistic environments that immediately impress. The detail level is high, and everything - from incidental objects to character models - is more alive and immersive. These new HD vistas, populated by characters that talk and move like real people, reminded me almost straight away of Half-Life 2.
Control, too, has been completely overhauled. Primary and secondary fire is now mapped to the right shoulder buttons, with iron-sight aiming on L1 and L2 pulling double duty for both crouching (a quick tap) and sprinting (hold it down). Response feels faster, and the game's pace has increased to match the slicker interface. Weapon selection has also changed, with Hale now restricted to just two firearms at a time. Even the health system has been revised, although this is disappointing, since the original game's traditional health bar, divided into separately recharging quarters, was one of its best ideas. It's a shame to see it replaced with yet another encroaching red mist to warn of impending death that dissipates after a few seconds' rest.

Better than a cloudy day in Grimsby? You'd better believe it.
It's traditional, of course, for shooters to showcase their evolution through new enemies and weapons, and Resistance doesn't disappoint on that front. In terms of new firepower, you get a well-balanced selection of human and Chimeran guns to play with, any of which will get you out of a tricky spot. Mainstays such as the Carbine, shotgun and sniper rifle all return, slightly tweaked, while some of the more popular Chimeran weapons also reprise their role. The Bullseye, for shooting around corners, is back along with the Auger, which can shoot through obstacles.
It's the new weapons that prove most interesting, however, and Resistance 2 can claim a special prize for having a desirable pistol. A powerful Magnum, it not only kills smaller foes with one shot, but the explosive bullets can also be detonated remotely. Given the game sometimes throws an astonishing number of enemies at you, it's enormous fun to plug one of the advancing horde then take out others by detonating the corpse. The splicer is similarly fun, launching saw blades that zoom and ricochet around, homing in on multiple enemies and shearing heads and limbs. The Wraith, meanwhile, is a powerful mini-gun that tears through crowds and deploys a handy forcefield. Whenever you run dry on one gun, you never feel sorry to have to swap it for another.
The gameplay has also adapted to this focus on mass destruction, showing off the robust muscle of the graphics engine in the process. While the campaign mode doesn't skimp on the tactical encounters that defined the original, pitting you against well-covered squads of enemies and forcing you to pick them off slowly but surely, it also draws inspiration from the manic shooters of the past for cathartic sequences. One memorable fragfest comes in an eerily deserted Californian town. Alien pods distort quaint Americana, and the whole level has a classic B-movie feel to it, as the pods begin to hatch, spitting easily-killed but fast and ferocious mutated zombies at you. Eventually, seeking refuge in the town's cinema, you're faced with a heaving auditorium. There are easily thirty or more enemies, all skittering and clawing at you, and the mixture of panic and exhilaration as you carve a path to safety through their mottled, decaying bodies is far more thrilling than anything in the first game.

Enemies are, on the whole, much larger and meaner than before. Luckily, you've got the improved arsenal to deal with them.
Other enemies are less successful, though. Furies are indestructible aquatic creatures that patrol submerged areas killing anyone who lingers in the water - a fairly crude way of keeping you on track. The same is true of the chameleon monsters that suddenly lunge towards you, shrouded in a Predator-style cloaking device. They're easily killed, but with little warning and another one-hit kill mechanic attached, they feel like a cheap shot used to strike up lazy scares, at odds with the more balanced and thoughtful design elsewhere.
For all its ability to surprise you with masses of enemies, the graphics engine doesn't always hold up under pressure either. There's a fair amount of clipping - one defeated Titan ended up half embedded in a warehouse before exploding messily - and it's reasonably common to find a lone Chimera stuck in a corner, obliviously trying to walk through a solid object. Such hiccupy moments tend to stand out all the more because of the extremely high graphical standard in general, and if you can forgive such lapses you're left with one of the best-looking games on the PS3.
The campaign mode is hefty in size, at least for the genre, offering around ten hours for an averagely skilled player on normal difficulty. It's well-paced, and throws up plenty of varied scenarios to test your mettle. The story feels somewhat perfunctory, though no worse than any of its rivals, and even the predictable excursions inside enemy ships are more bearable than similar levels in other games, even if the sweeping alien architecture may leave you wondering if you're fighting the Chimera or the Covenant. Speaking of which, Resistance 2 is arguably more cohesive than any of Halo's single-players, and while the game never quite matches Bungie's highs, it never plunges to the same depths either. Even in a battle against an alien swarm that some will peg as a Flood rip-off, the challenge is more balanced, the outcome more interesting and the integration into the wider gameplay more satisfying.
Then again, Halo never got its highest marks for the solo campaign, but for the huge strides it made in first popularising and later defining console FPS multiplayer. Resistance 2 brings its own innovations to the table, though they're more evolutionary in nature. Insomniac's boast of increasing the number of simultaneous players for competitive games from 40 to 60 could well fall into a pit of PR bluster, were it not that the team has obviously considered ways to balance that many players rather than just bolstering the net code to allow more people in. Rather than having sixty people running around at random, these large-scale matches have their own dedicated mode - Skirmish - and players are split into a number of competing squads. Each squad has objectives to meet; objectives that are also being attempted by a rival team. So rather than one giant battle, you get a series of smaller confrontations all taking place on the same map.
It's either a stroke of genius or a fiendish cheat, depending on how you view the world of online play. Certainly, depending on the map and objectives, there will be times when you won't even notice that there are dozens of other people elsewhere in the same game. When the combinations click, however, the result is quietly impressive - a traditional and accessible multiplayer that convinces you you're taking part in a larger war. It probably won't be enough to impress Warhawk fans, but in the realms of FPS it's a shrewd idea.

A Titan boss in co-op play, and this four-man team wisely opts to attack from all sides rather than face its powerful beam weapon.
Resistance 2 saves its most innovative ideas for co-operative play, however. The traditional answer would be to let players go through the single-player side-by-side, but instead, up to eight players join forces and take on a series of miniature campaigns that run alongside the main story, suggesting some of the other events that are occurring while Hale does his hero thing. There are six maps, drawn from this game and the original, with a set number of different objectives attached to each. The game randomly selects and shuffles three of these objectives for each game, throwing in some boss encounters to spice things up further.
You choose from three classes - Soldier, Spec Ops and Medic - with each relying on the other two for success. Soldiers are tough, well-armed and can use their Wraith mini-guns to create mobile shields to protect other players as you push forwards. Medics can heal wounded teammates, but rather than removing them from active duty the game allows them to join in the combat as well - drawing health from enemies to heal themselves. Spec Ops troops can fling fresh ammo to other players but also deal in heavy damage, making them the frontline choice for larger boss battles.
Each also has an optional "Berserk" - a gameplay buff activated by filling a meter with enough kills - and these offer benefits, like Prototype Ammo, which allows Spec Ops players to dish out extra-powerful ammunition; Ring of Life, which creates a healing circle around a Medic; and Overload, which allows a Soldier to take enemies with him by exploding upon death in a manner similar to Call of Duty's Martyr perk.

Meanwhile, on Tatooine, Jabba the Hutt is solemnly sticking "lost pet" posters on lampposts.
Each class earns experience based on successful execution of their roles, as well as completed objectives and defeated enemies, and this then plays into a simplified levelling system. New abilities and Berserks are unlocked as you advance through the ranks, while "grey tech" retrieved from fallen enemies can be used to purchase new armour and weaponry, which customises your character's appearance. This currency can be carried from one class to another, so you can use a successful Soldier character to build up a Medic on the same account without tiresome grinding each time.
It's a simple system, elegantly executed, and by keeping the classes to just three it creates an instinctive symbiosis between players. One class cannot succeed alone, so working together is your most attractive option simply because it works. The only potential downside is that you will, inevitably, run out of combinations of maps and objectives sooner or later. Some may also mourn the lack of a traditional co-op mode. It'll take you a decent amount of time to explore all the co-op options, however, and even more if you want to level up each class and earn all the bonuses, medals and other rewards for good play.
Overall, multiplayer is the satisfying other half to a formidable package, and Resistance 2 is precisely the sort of exclusive game that the PS3 needs. Improving tenfold on its predecessor in almost every area, it not only belongs on the shopping list of existing Resistance fans, but those who were underwhelmed with the original will also want to check it out, and then fight for it on the internet. It's the way of the warrior.

There is plenty too keep people occupied on the sub £200 consoles, the PS3 at £300 before games and accessories is still an unnecessary luxury if you have a Xbox 360, I mean its not as though Xbox 360 doesn't have some top shooters coming its way is there? Gears2, COD5, Left for dead, Dead Space, etc

Completely agree, from MGS onwards I'm 100% converted. Not sure if I could could live without my 360 just yet, but not sure I could live without my PS3 either now! Still PS2less (bastards!) but worth the money now IMO (and about bloody time too!).

No mention of the A.I. focusing on only you though that was mentioned in a couple of other reviews I've read - it's not noticeable then? How good is the A.I. overall, is it worse or better than other games in the genre?

Not as good as the 360 version of Fallout 3 you mean. The PS3 version is not as good sadly.
I knew R2 was going to be great. And i love the fact that it did turn out to be this good. The best exclusive action game for the PS3 for sure.

That would be Far Cry 2. Nobody can be expecting a Treyarch developed CoD to be much good.

More like casual gamer/shooter bias confirmed.
Seriously even those RPGs who get get more than 8 usually have heavy shooter or slashing elements - Fable 2, Fallout 3 , ME .
I haven't seen any proper RPG or strategy go over 8 here for a long time.

As I say though, no problem with games about 10 hours long.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Indeed. I'm lucky enough to have both a PS3 and 360, and whilst I've owned the 360 longer and played it more, I'm on it less these days (that's also got something to do with a little PC title by the name of Warhammer Online), but also because of the stellar titles that are coming out on PS3. I still don't prefer one console to the other, but I feel in order to enjoy a lot of the great exclusives coming out, it's wise to own both.
Killzone 2 was a great hoot in beta, so I'm desperate for the full release, and the same can be said for Resistance 2...also LBP is out today... (as well as having Dead Space, Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3 to complete) so let the good times roll! That being said GOW2 is also on my list for the 360 at the end of the week

Why would it be suprising? It's by Treyarch, afterall.
As for this? I am a bit suprised, but what's even more suprising is that this got/is getting less hype than KZ2. Insomniac are a much better team, with a better history of quality.....unlike guerilla.

On the easy difficultys right? Gears on Insane and COD4 on veteran is another story my friend.
True but just because it takes you three times as long to complete a level, doesn't actually make the campaign itself any longer IMO. It's still the same five shortish Acts, they're just harder to get through. Resistance felt like a much larger game to me as there was more variety and more levels. Maybe it wasn't but it felt twice as big as Gears of Wars campaign and took me a good 15 hours to finish off. That's why I said I was happy with Dan saying R2 has a 10 hour campaign, that's likely to take me longer to get through.
To be honest, I've always thought that difficulty levels in FPSs were wasted in that replaying the game doesn't give you anything new to see or allow you to take a different route through the levels. They don't even randomise enemy placement for goodness sakes so you know what is coming and when on a second playthrough. If they did then there'd be more reason to replay these kinds of games. As it is I feel a lengthy campaign is a must although there's a danger that they can be *too* long and you'll grow bored of them before the end. Hopefully R2 like the first game has the length just right.

Its all really worthwhile.

Even though i can afford both (i have two 360s). I dont have time to play all the games i really want to play on the 360 alone. I wouldnt have that problem if i only owned a PS3 though. No need for more than one format. And if i had to choose to spend my time on Gears 2, fable 2, R2, L4D and LPB i would have picked Gears 2, L4D and Fable 2 anyway. Ive also bought Dead Space and according to EG the 360 version is superior. so there. PS3 is getting better and better though.

Assuming that this comes from the 'you must play all good games' sentiment. Money has never been an issue but I still don't own one. I've always had one console until one year before the end of a generation, that has suited me just fine. I don't play games just to play good games, I play good games to entertain myself. You can do that perfectly well just owning a pc, 360 or ps3.
I have enough time to play roughly one game every two months. I've bought 5 games over the past 2 months and some more to come. If you want to own more than one machine, good for you but I've never felt the need nor had the time.

Of course there are people still playing gears of war 1 MP... but that doesen't make the game a multiplayer phenomenon, it's actually very far form that.
RFOM, Halo3 and COD will dominate in that matter... only fans of the series will prefer Gears MP to one of the previously mentioned.

Well I think there are quite a few fans of it to make it a phenomenon, I understand that while it was number one on Live for over a year it didn’t have much competition, but I still think this will be up there in the top three for a long while, Horde alone sounds brilliant. That said though, I like it, so I would think that.

I did like the R1 storytelling, its just the continual chapter breaks and pauses coupled with a "lets hand hold you few the initial scrapes" approach really didn't help the game. Halo kicked off with a frankly awesome attack on a spaceship where R1 kicked off with a jaunt through York and about 5 enemies to shoot.
R2 apparently really launches into it so well done there, I think I will miss that kind of detached historical narrative that the woman bod did through the first game though.

Half-Life and its sequels have fantastic stories but they're conveyed in a completely realistic way rather than via 10 minute cutscenes. I can see why someone would mistake a game without cutscenes for having no story but in this case they are completely wrong. It's like saying BioShock didn't have any story either and that is not right either as it tells a story in an equally effective and believable way without the need for lengthy cinematics... well apart from the last scene that is which is a cutscene!

HL2 was awesome all over to the max times 10. The narrative is conveyed in game, and from the ambience of the world itself. I got a pretty good idea of what had happened and what was happening simply from the jumpsuits, flying cameras and the still brilliantly-animated Alyx and co.

Are you batshit insane. Naruto on 360 was a simple fighter with no depth at all and kiddy platforming. I know which one I will be getting, the 360 version was a waste of 20 euro's. Had more fun with the one PS3 level demo than in the whole 360 game

THANK YOU FOR YOUR QUESTION. THE SIZE OF THE MONSTERS VARIES CONSIDERABLY. MOST ARE MERELY HUMAN SIZED, OR PERHAPS A LITTLE TALLER. IMAGINE JEFF GOLDBLUM IN PLATFORM HEELS. THERE ARE ALSO SOME MONSTERS WHICH ARE BIGGER THAN THIS. IMAGINE IF BRUCE FORSYTH WERE TO SIT ON JEFF GOLDBLUMS SHOULDERS AND RAISE HIS HANDS IN THE AIR. ABOUT THAT HIGH.
OTHERS ARE VERY SMALL, BEETLES AND SPIDERY THINGS AND SUCHLIKE. THESE MONSTERS ARE USUALLY BETWEEN THE SIZE OF AN OLD LADIES HAND AND A MEDIUM SIZED WOK.
MOSTLY I THINK YOU'LL BE LOOKING FOR THE EXTRA-SPECIAL LARGE MONSTERS WHICH CAN BE AS BIG AS A BUILDING. A PROPER BIG BUILDING, LIKE IN AMERICA, NOT A SCOUT HUT OR BUNGALOW.
THE GAME ALLOWS YOU TO SHOOT BULLETS AT ALL OF THESE MONSTERS. IT'S RATHER GOOD FUN.
LOTS OF LOVE,

Seriously since when has the first person shooter genre being innovative? A lack of new ideas isn't necessarily a bad thing as it doesn't mean they're not fun to play. I mean Halo and Call of Duty 4 proved that. Even Gears of War wasn't exactly original since the cover tactic has been used in other games before that, it was just that it was one of the few games to put everything together into one neat little fun package.

Yeah, think Valve are dicks but HL2 is an amazing game. Looks fantastic, better than any UE3 game with their overdose of fancy tricks and horrible lighting. It's understated art direction makes the game world more realistic than any other (e.g. next to HL2 Bioshock's art direction and level design is a joke). It tells a story as good as gaming as a medium is capable of and the audio is great too (the Combine samples are almost as good as the Helghast ones of KZ1).

Comment below viewing threshold Show
I dont care about MS at all. If Sony made the 360 it wouldnt make a difference. I dont say MS is the better company so im not defending them. You got it all wrong. I actually thouth the PS3 was going to be the best console this generation, but that didnt happen. Gamers that own both consoles do prefer the 360 and says a lot imo. Im just annoyed that so many gamers actually believe the PS3 is better just because its a Playstation. Theyre wrong thats all. Its still a very good Blue ray player i believe.

If the games you prefer are not in that set of "best quality games" then it's not clear is it? No single system has an all encompassing set of "quality games" covering everyone's preferences. So lets just leave people to their personal choice and let it lie eh?

As mentioned, both consoles are great, neither has an exclusives line up which is any better or worse than the other.
Value for money is very subjective:
Out of the box playing games: 360
Out of the box playing games + bluray: PS3
Personally I still don't own a PS3 as I can play bluray already and have a decent gaming PC+360, so to me personnaly £300 to play a few exclusives just isn't worse it right now, blu-ray would help if I didn't already have a player.
There is different consoles, games and prices to suit everybody, as long as people can justify to themsleves why they own (or don't own) certain consoles then leave them to it, if you are happy with what you have it doesn't mean everybody else would be.

Where did you get that from????
If anything its been adopted faster than DVD ever did - Fact.
Steady increase in sales of hardware and movie studios releasing a lot of back catalogue.
Sub £200 players. My first DVD player was £300 in 1998.
By 2010, if you need to buy a replacement DVD player it'll be Blu-ray there for increasing market penetration.
Upscaling (I have a Denon for this) though nice, just doesn't replace missing data and still has all the crap that DVD pictures contain. Do not be fooled. Upscale DVD is no match for 1080P. Not even close.
Mass market HD (1080p) download is way off and the fact of the matter, joe public likes goods in hand. Movie download has not followed the success of music down load yet due to the front end being a PC.
Bluray is around till the next physical media arrives, which isnt needed yet.
The only thing that is poor about Bluray is the cost of the films on the high street. Online is the way to go. Except for when HMV do there 2 for £30 deals which covers most films except for the last months releases.
Comment on wired vs. wired. - My Broadband router is not in the same room as the console, so I have to use wireless. Online gaming seems ok. COD4 is variable
Comment below viewing threshold Show
I was more going at the angle of you don't need a wireless adapter for the 360, but I can see how some people do need to consider it, it really should be closer to the £20-£30 mark by now.
To me the PS3 has the opposite problem, I would rather they take £100 off the price and remove the wireless and blu-ray (yes I know the blu-ray isn't that simple), I think its better to pay less then pay for extras you want than have to pay for extras you don't need.
The main reason I own a 360 and not a PS3 is because the 360 was first, and the fact the PS3 still costs more than what I bought my 360 at (a good while ago) and doesn't do anything better on the games front means I can't justify it (to myself or my other half), if I couldn't already play bluray then I could use that as an excuse.
Since then I have realised PC is the way forward anyway...
Comment below viewing threshold Show
I suppose it's the convenience of putting the game in the machine and it actually working without any sodding around. But hey, I forgot; Sodding around with settings/drivers is part of the fun, right?
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Comment below viewing threshold Show
If you don't need wifi, then its a needless addition in the PS3... all back to the whatever suits your needs principle, but don't disregard it because you personally don't want it. The same thing winds be up with people regarding bluray ability as unnecessary and therefore a useless addition.
So as I say, its not so much a "this is a factual reason why one is better than the other" angle I'm going for, more of a "don't dismiss out of hand what you put no value in to". Plus half of the insistence on plus and negatives on hardware setups is mainly some sort of defence mechanism from both sides.

Bear in mind when posting comments that hardly anybody gives a damn about your opinion. They're generally here to read what the professional thinks. Your voice is an impotent squawk into an uncaring void.
If you're whining about EG, about scores, about advertising intruding on editorial integrity or simply asserting that you know best and the reviewer is an idiot - when you could just as easily say "I disagree" - then all your comment is doing is making the 80 per cent of rational people who hang around here want to reach through the screen and punch you in the mouth.
If you want an average, go to Gamerankings. If you want an opinion, read a review. That's all there is to it.

Sorry but I am yet to see any professional journalism in the games industry (especially in the online section). EG's average article most certainly doesn't score any high points. The people writing video game reviews are just gamers like you and me, giving their opinion. Just because they get paid to give their opinion and receive games before we do, doesn't mean that they are professional journalists.
Not that the rest of the press is doing so much better these days mind.

I think it should be standard in this generation of consoles, ok you might not need it, but at least it's there if you do, ie you might switch your console to another room or move house etc
It must be a bit of a nasty shock to some 360 owners to have to fork out the extra cash and find out that their console was not so cheap after all.

Yeah, it sells as poorly as the 360, year-on-year which can be considered catastrophic. But the main reason is that besides pushing lots of pixels it doesn't do much more than the consoles the masses already own: PS2 and Wii.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
No, I thought it was pretty tedious too... not a patch on the original.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Oh you mean just like Halo and every other FPS since?
I didn't think Halo was particularly original. It was well executed, but there certainly wasn't anything in that game that hadn't been seen before.
Seriously since when has the first person shooter genre being innovative?
You're possibly too young to remember but, since the first person shooter genre was invented, there have been numerous innovations including (but not limited to) - split-screen multiplayer, online multiplayer, ability to create your own levels, proper 3D modelling, grenades, vehicles, cover systems, NPCs fighting alongside you, RPG-style stats. The games that brought in these innovations are generally heralded as ground-breaking, those that merely copied have largely fallen by the wayside (unless they took a previously broken innovation and made it work).
Resistance 2 brings absolutely nothing new to the genre at all, ergo it's nothing to get particularly excited about IMO.
A lack of new ideas isn't necessarily a bad thing as it doesn't mean they're not fun to play. I mean Halo and Call of Duty 4 proved that.
Depends on how easily pleased you are... I found those two games dull as ditchwater.
Even Gears of War wasn't exactly original since the cover tactic has been used in other games before that, it was just that it was one of the few games to put everything together into one neat little fun package.
The ability to allow a friend to drop in or out of the single-player campaign was pretty original - very few games before GoW offered that feature in quite that way. But really, I fail to see your point. I never mentioned any of these games you're talking about. For the record, although I even got bored with Gears of War by the start of the very last chapter of the single-player campaign and never bothered finishing it... and I was generally only playing that in co-op mode.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Actually, SCE (who make the PS3) are the one company in Sony who are reducing their losses (with a recent 10% profit increase).
Sony's current financial problems are actually due to the weak Yen against the US Dollar and Euro.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Gah. I swear, that kind of half-cocked drivel gives me heartburn.
If you take a little look down the annals of publishing history, you might find that there's a historical precedent for this strange beast know as the "review". Whether you define reviewers - of games, theatre, restaurants or anything else - as "journalists" or as "critics" is up to you. Either way, they're being paid for their work, so they're professionals.
If you, in turn, wish to criticise them, it will be about how well they meet their brief, not whether they do so as a professional. And you'll be speaking as an amateur critic. There's one of those babies inside all of us so, you know, forgive us if we don't listen.
And, incidentally, are you saying games writers cannot, in principle, be journalists? Because the last time I looked, the collecting, writing and presenting of news was pretty much the definition of journalism, and that - along with features - makes up a substantial amount of many games mags. Just because it's news from a niche doesn't mean it's not news.
Or are you saying that you're open to the idea that games journalism could exist, in principle, but that you've never seen any in the whole history of games-related publishing that has lived up to the standards you demand? What might those standards be?

Don't mind the 2 weapon system too much. Had feared it would be annoying but given the frequency with which you can swap guns, it's not too bad. What's less ideal though is that you know what's coming up by the weapons that lie around. Must admit that I played R1 using almost only the Carabine and Auger (just like in R&C from the huge number of guns you end up using 2-3 favourites over and over most of the time), at least the two weapon set-up makes sure you give them all a try.

Comment below viewing threshold Show
The game is less polished than the typical Insomniac game and game balancing is off now and then. It's not very hard (though I'm only half way through but I'm not very good at shooters) but there's the occasional 1-hit kill attack that some find annoying, though it doesn't bother me much TBH. And I personally prefer a health system with proper hit point idication and health packs over the nowadays common damage-magically-goes-away-if-you-don't-get-shot-for-x-secon ds-system (which R2 applies as well, to be clear).
Comment below viewing threshold Show

"...30 or more enemies on screen at one time..."
Dont mean for this to sound trollish but how many does GOW2 manage? Im a big fan of lots of on screen action, its a real immersion puller for me.
Don't believe everything you see/hear.
If you look closely at the Locust, like when you're on the big.. robot.. thing.., use the sniper and look at them and there's barely any detail on them at all.
Hardly convincing as the really small examples at that point probably have 20 times less polycount than the original sized ones.
Found that very disappointing.
Epic were saying about loads on a screen and could only manage it with really small, blurry examples that only have a running an dying animation and that's it...

I'm normally pretty good at shooters but i've literally died hundred of times while playing R2 on normal. The majority of the deaths have been one hit kills or enemies just rushing me and gunning me down in 3 or 4 hits.
It pure trial-and-error, learn-where-the-enemies-come-from gameplay. No skill involved just a desire to replay the same sections over and over. Utter shit compared to the first one or GOW2 which i moved onto last night after this crap.
Maybe the multiplayer is good but it just isn't a 9/10 game based on my experience of the single player.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Really? Just finished it (SP) and I'm not a very good FPS player (never even played one online) but had little trouble with R2 on normal, think it's a bit too easy even. Thanks to the now common regenerating health there's no challenge whatsoever in FPSs anymore. I thought the one-hit-kill enemies were a good remedy for this system: they keep you on your toes. Even better would be to just go back to good old hit points en med packs though.
R2 grew on me. At first the too dark lighting (or lack of brightness controls) bothered me a lot, by the end it bothered me a little bit. The game would have looked even better if a significant part of it wasn't completely black, but maybe it's just my TV (though I don't have this problem with any other game). While restrictive and sometimes ruining surprises ('gee, a shotgun, wonder what type of enemy will come up next'), the 2-weapon system at least made me use each and every weapon rather than just stick to Augur and Bullseye for the entire game.
All in all a worthy successor to R1 IMO. Will definitely give online a try this time.

True, the discrepancy doesn't make any sense (probably different reviewers, which again proves the point that review scores are futile).
The first game was more polished, had better level design, better damage system and more varied gameplay. But this one looks better (except for the lighting) so that probably explains the higher score... And it has better enemies and bosses (though the latter are rather easy).
As for running from one set-piece to the next, that's basically the template for FPSs, was the same in the first one and every other FPS except maybe STALKER (according to the mixed reviews).

1. It gets really good at Orick.
2. It looks a hell of a lot better on my old 26in Samsung that it does on my 42in Toshiba. On the Tosh it looks jaggy as hell and the constrast is really buggered, being either very bright or very dark with little in between. I've had this problem on one other game on the PS3 - Uncharted. It's a shame because the Tosh is really good, overwise. Certainly glad I kept the Samsung, though.
