PS3 Slim in September, price cut now

€299 for either, 120GB HDD in new one.

Sony has officially announced the new slim PlayStation 3 and said it will be available in the first week of September worldwide.

It will cost €299, $299 and 29,980 yen, and has a 120GB hard disk inside. That price will also apply to the original PS3 as of tomorrow.

Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kaz Hirai, at gamescom for the announcement, said it was 32 per cent smaller, 36 per cent lighter and consumes 34 per cent less power.

There was no word on connectivity and any other technical features, but we'll hopefully be able to dig those up following the conference.

The new PS3 is simply the new PS3, with no funky-sounding name, which presumably explains why ASDA reckons Sony's discontinuing the old one.

Eurogamer's Ellie Gibson, covering the conference live, described the new model PS3 as "thin and square and matte, not fat and shiny and piano-y like the old one, but still curved".

ok... so €100 euro off. €50 more expensive than Wii. Same price than 360 (until tomorrow?). The coming months should be interesting...
  • Law07 #2 3 years ago

If anyone fucking asks for another price cut they can jolly well fuck off the earth.

    Nicely played Sony
  • NotSoSlim #3 3 years ago

    Whats the pound price...grrrr
  • Eraysor #4 3 years ago

    I want another price cut.
  • BlueDot #5 3 years ago

Current exchange rate says £255, it's going to be £269.99 I reckon.

£249.99 would be nice, I'm still waiting for God of War 3 though as I just bought a bluray player so it's not a desired feature anymore.

    bollocks to that!
  • FenderMaster #8 3 years ago

we're still getting ripped off compared to Americans, but at least now, finally, the PS3 is competitively priced, at least in relation to the Wii/360

now the important stuff, any pics yet? BC confirmed yes/no?

PS3 Slim is $299 and €299, so what's the UK price?
    a) £299
    b) £275
    c) £250
    d) £225
    e) something else?

  • Ihya #11 3 years ago

    so how much in £?
  • Ryze #12 3 years ago

To get the full picture here, we need the £ price, storage options, and further updates on the PS2 BC saga.

I'm also curious to know what the power consumption is like.

edit: Oh, oh - I'd like to know if they've upped the BD-ROM speed to 4x or 6x to speed up loading and install times, as they suck arse at present.

PS3 also needed a USB port at the back, as it looks silly with 4 devices / a hub plugged in at the front. We're in wishlist nit-pick terrirory here, though.

Hopefully I'll also be able output sound from HDMI and optical at the same time soon >:-|

A slim was entirely predictable once the leaked shots came out. They contained far too many details to be fake. Anyway well done Sony. Let's just see the specs in detail and see what has and what hasn't changed about the slim other than its size.
  • Skire #14 3 years ago

Wow this is amazing! Everyone should buy a PS3 now, seriously!!
  • ejikeanyanwu #15 3 years ago

    the price range is £180 - £250, i think it'll probably be around £229.99
  • twoism #16 3 years ago

Am I the only one who thinks the slim redesign looks fugly compared to the original? Something about that non-shiny black surface reminds me of the PS2.
  • NorUraeus #17 3 years ago

I want confirmation about if they managed to put a USB port on the back this time as that could tip me over in terms of upgrading from my release model PS3 :)

  • cardtrix #18 3 years ago

It has to be above £229.99 because thats the price of the PSP Go.
  • Lucien21 #19 3 years ago

Due to the exchange rate with the Euro the UK price is increasing to £310. :)
  • sjmlondon #20 3 years ago

$299 equates to roughly £175 at current exchange rates.

The euro prices is certainly expensive compared to the US $ price.

Will Sony never learn about ripping off Europeans.

Anyway I'm sure they're be a lovely new Xbox along next year. No need to go near the Sony beast.

  • Lucien21 #21 3 years ago

The BBC is now saying it's £249.00.
  • NotSoSlim #22 3 years ago

    @sjmlondon

All 3 companies do it..no need to just blame Sony

And as evilfoxhound said in the US this will be seen as major as the Elite it rumored to be lovered to $299 as well as its currently $349 i think.

  • lavalant #23 3 years ago

I'm thinking £299 is a more realistic price point, especially now that it's fashionable to increase prices in the UK and blame it some lame excuse.

Ohh there is VAT also, that's a good one.
  • Twin_snakes #24 3 years ago

  • JayBuchanan #25 3 years ago

It will also be cheaper than the original, costing £249.99 in the UK, around £50 cheaper than the original.
    Can't wait to get one.

I though that people buys consoles because the games, not because it looks pretty.
  • soviet_ #27 3 years ago

Even more ugly than the original PS3, they must've had to try really hard to pull that off
  • NotSoSlim #28 3 years ago

Isnt that the opening at the front?
  • DjFlex52 #29 3 years ago

"The $299 price in the us is a MASSIVE deal and could see Sony make the biggest comeback in recent videogame memory. Just check some US forums to see what I mean. They have all just exploded with the price cut announcement."

Unfortunately, the US forums are full of Sony loyals who already have a PS3. What they are hoping for is that the normal consumers will flock to the stores and buy a PS3.
  • BM #30 3 years ago

The shocker is that back when I made that prediction (and its less than 3 weeks ago) 299 Euro converted to around £220 GBP, now its over £250.

The MS price hike suddenly seems a lot more understandable considering how badly the po0und has depreciated against the Euro over the last month.

The highest this year is only 1.18 euro for the pound, which would have made the PS3 £253.

By time ico3 comes out.. another price drop mightve happened.. so i can wait.
  • Darren #48 3 years ago

I'm impressed with how Sony have managed to reduce the size of the PS3 by around 30% but I think the new design looks a bit cheap and plasticky from those Joystiq screenshots linked earlier. I think it's the lack of the chrome trim. Still, it looks less like a games console I suppose and more like something that sits under the TV with the Sky box so maybe that was the intention? The PS3 is, after all, a damn fine DVD/BD player-cum-home media hub.

I wonder if Microsoft will ever attempt that with the Xbox 360 or is that asking for trouble given its poor reliability record? ;)
  • NotSoSlim #49 3 years ago

    @smelly

Nah that Last Gaurdian will be on 360
  • agparrot #50 3 years ago

So hang on a minute, Asda have reduced the price of the existing 80Gb PS3 to £250, which I can buy today, or I can wait for the slim, and buy a smaller unit with a 120Gb Hard drive, also for £250?

What's the incentive for me to buy an 'old' one from Asda?
  • david78 #51 3 years ago

The asda ones come with bundled games.
  • smelly #52 3 years ago

    >Nah that Last Gaurdian will be on 360

yeah.. i know that's about as likely as me pulling a blonde 18 year old model.

    But I can wish.
  • chessboxer #53 3 years ago

    @ agparrot

The incentive is that you get one today. Plain and simple.
  • smelly #54 3 years ago

    "B&W 3 or Fable 3. "

What on earth? How come THAT got a negative tick?

sheesh.. whoever negated me - come back tomorrow, and be proved wrong.
  • Darren #55 3 years ago

Can the hard drive still be upgraded in the new slim PS3? I noticed in the Joystiq screenshots that there's no side panel like there is on the current models?
  • GamesConnoisseur #56 3 years ago

£250 is still a nice ball park figure, and would be interesting to see how many new people will flocks to adopt the PS3 (I m discarding the PS3 owners who just want to add or swop!) and if PS2 owners will be finally convinced to take the plunge?

Could be a very interesting battle this Christmas and all to play for!
  • DjFlex52 #57 3 years ago

"They will(imo) as the console enters 360 price range and its $100 dollars off"

    @NotSoSlim

How is the PS3 in the 360's price range when it's still 100 dollars more than the arcade? When Sony loyals argue about price for the last year, they always used the $199 Arcade as why the PS3 isn't selling out. Now that the PS3 knocked off $100, you are comparing it to the $299 Elite instead of the $199 Arcade? Hmm ;)

The arcade in the us is $199 and the elite currently is $349.99 (Pro getting discontinued) so as of tomorrow you can i the US get a PS3 for the same price as the top 360 as the rumored price drop for the Elite is £299.99. It all depends on what MS do with the Arcade tomorrow but Sony have entered the 360 range in US imo

  • kungfool #66 3 years ago

@ 71 - yeah, you're right. But I've looked at the pics and I can't see where you'd slide in a new HDD. I might get the old one while I can...
  • dominalien #67 3 years ago

Am I the only one who likes the new PS3's look in the Joystiq photos? And I don't even have a vested interest in it, unless my current PS3 dies unexpectedly.

Also, I wish they'd gone with draft n wi-fi. That might tempt me to get one, as then that'd be one step closer to a full-n 5GHz network. Of course, my PSP only has b wi-fi.
  • Darren #68 3 years ago

The slim PS3 also comes with Bravia Sync which means that if you have a Sony Bravia HDTV and use the console with HDMI the TV will turn on and switch to the correct channel as soon as the console is turned on. If you turn the TV off then the PS3 will also turn off. It's a neat feature that I find handy with my standalone Sony BD player so it's nice that Sony have finally added it to the PS3 too.

    *Edit*
Forgot to mention that you can use the TV remote to navigate the XMB too.

BTW, I believe referring to people by # is useless, since if someone is ignored the numbers don't match. e.g. the poster before me refers to #71, whereas I only have 69 posts.
  • Darren #70 3 years ago

@kingfool - From what I can gather the HDD slot is underneath the BD drive on the right hand side. There appears to be a panel there with writing on "HDMI etc etc" so I presume that is removable.
  • DjFlex52 #71 3 years ago

I've seen all the pictures for the PS3....I've see no HD opening in front or back and Sony is conveniently not showing how BIG the power brick will be in the Slim.
  • MeBrains #72 3 years ago

HD slot appears to be at the front under the BD loader. You can see the breakaway panel clearly marked with a long series of logos like the DVD-Video mark etc. Additionally there appear to be a series of cooling vents just underneath it.

    http://ww w.flickr.com/photos/playstation...

You can see the panel is removable by looking at the side view here:

One of the things that really got my goat was the on/off switch on the ps3. I hate putting my gadgets on standy and the 360's design allows me to switch off the machine completely. Having looked at the pics via joystiq it seems that sony have got rid of the on/off switch round the back. Looking at the machine now it seems that they have designed it well.

so £249 eh? Hmm... might have to start looking at what bundles retailers start putting together. If at the time of God of War 3's release there's a bundle for £230-40 then I'm sold. That would be a pretty sweet price for me.

And I quite like the look of it - I can live with the PS2 style plastic seeing as how it no longer looks like some kind of sandwich maker.

  • ejikeanyanwu #97 3 years ago

I hope Eurogamer is gonna be using the PS3 SLim, i knows almost no difference apart from physical appearance and less power usage but it'd still be a cool thing.
  • EuroStalker #98 3 years ago

This is great stuff from Sony. The PS3 is value for money given the features you get. As an Xbox 360 owner I used to think BluRay was overrated. Having seen the Bourne Trilogy and Dark Knight in high def, I can safely say that I was wrong. Do not look past PS3's ability to play high def films. This is a big advantage over the Xbox 360 and it also has some of the best varied games.

I think Sony have missed a trick by not including PS2 backwards compatibility. By having that in, it would give PS2 owners one more reason to move up.

Sony Europe also need to get their act together with the PS Store. I had a look at the US store and it has much more content. In fact the UK PS store would be laughable if it weren't for Wipeout which is just an amazing game.

    Looking forward to:

    Heavy Rain
    Uncharted 2
    GT5 (about time)
    MAG
    Demon's Souls

    Not looking forward to:

More LBP stuff on PS Store
    Home updates every 10 secs

  • Ryze #99 3 years ago

    Looks interesting...

Hmmm... no upgrades bar the HDD... so... fine if you don't already have a PS3, want the power/space savings, or like the look of the new one.

Also Continuous Play has been canned, so I guess if you don't have a b/c PS3, you're better off grabbing one of these than paying £175 for certain repairs.

Overall - good for encouraging more PS3 purchases, when coupled with the right game releases.

It would be nice if they had stealthily put in some high speed flash memory to cache and load games quickly / load HOME without the faff, though...

    Maybe in 3 years, then...

All those deluding themselves that the £ price is going to be "around £229" or "probably £249" just stop right there.

Afterall, this IS Sony we are talking about. Yes the same people who brought you:

    1. Delayed launch in Europe, despite the promise of a "world-wide simultaneous release".
    2. Backwards Compatibility/No Backwards Compatibility. Different models with different specifications - leading customers to feeling cheated and rightly resentful.
    3. DualShock is so yesterday - here's SixAxis instead...Oh, wait a minute, we've just settled our court case with Immersion, let's release DualShock 3 and stiff our customers who bought extra SixAxis units.
    4. 20GB HDD, no make that 60GB...Nah, let's put in 80GB. No, no, no - 120GB, actually. WTF?!
    5. £425 UK launch price...That's right...£425!!!

So with that last sour note still in the mouths of many who've not upgraded from their beloved PS2, including me, I think you can expect a good stiffingly pound-for-dollar exchange and thus the price will be £299.99 inc. VAT.

    @zedzee,

The £249 figure was announced on the official UK playstation blog.

Are you interested in exchanging some currency? Sterling has been pretty steady against the Euro since late May.

"If it is really £250 then that is only a £25 price cut."

The way the pound is against the yen.. Im surprised they're not raising the price!

  • o_ci2007 #108 3 years ago

I agree that £250 might still not be low enough to attract a million people but I think the preowned obese ps3 is going to be a really interesting proposition now. I have been eying one for a while now. will keep my eyes on the lookout.

Am I the only one who thinks the obese looks better than the slim? Then again I like curvy women.

@smelly, "The way the pound is against the yen.. Im surprised they're not raising the price!"

What? Why? The $-£ price of the slim is fairly similar to the ¥-£ price.

If Sony were looking to match the UK price with the Yen, then it would be the £220-£230 that some people predicted.

Someone talked about "PS2 plastic". I actually prefer the new matt black finish to the shiny finish on mine. Shiny black is so last season ;)

    @zedzee

You appear to be immune to sarcasm re the £425 price.

    @Hexagon

"If it is really £250 then that is only a £25 price cut."

Well not really. You are comparing a new RRP to a shop discounted price. If you compare RRP to RRP you will get a different result. Retailers will discount this new price pretty soon, same as they always have. Then you can make a fair comparison.

donnie: what on earth makes you think that the public's perception of the PSX brand is bad?! there are over 125mil PS2 owners and the console is still selling. with all the great games on the platform, they probably have a good time with it as well. so again, why would the public's perception be bad?
  • rotmm #112 3 years ago

    @MeBrains.

    Donnie is a 'tard.

And you're right. In much of Europe, the noun "Playstation" is used instead of "games console", so that a Xbox or Wii in a home is still often referred to as a PlayStation.

The brand still has a huge cachet. No other company could have released the PS3 at the price it did and still gain a significant foothold in the marketplace.
  • LordGamma19K #113 3 years ago

Bet! Now if we could just get yet another price cut for the 360 I'd buy one.
  • MARKIV #114 3 years ago

Let's face it, the new PS3 slim looks like suck. It hardly compares to redesign of the original PSP to the PSP Go. This is Sony trying to save costs at every angle.

Did the same guy who designed the original Xbox 1, jump ship and design this? it certainly looks so!

Surely new versions of consoles should look better and not worse than their predecessors! It's almost 2010!

I hope the new Xbox 360 / 720 looks alot better in the fall of 2010 than this! :)

Anyway, I'm happy with my 280w original PS3, just roll on the new black Wii in the UK and elsewhere!

To be really cool, it needs to be retro Beige with Brown trimmings ;)
I remember painting my Amiga 600 matt Black :))

Naa, it was the same guy who designed Lik Sang's cheap knock off range, the 'Popstation'.
