PS Eye gets price, date

Early November for a pony.

Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation Eye will be out in Europe on 7th November.

It will cost you GBP 24.99 and come bundled with a free copy of editing suite EyeCreate, which lets you snap pictures, video, and audio clips before saving them to your hard drive.

The new hardware also comes as part of The Eye of Judgement retail box, which will be out on 26th October. And Sony promises you will be able to claim a free copy of EyeCreate from the PlayStation Store using a magical code.

Thursday 25th October also sees the release of Eye compatible games Operation Create Feature, Aqua Vita and The Trials of Topoq, a game where you have to roll a ball around maps using your body as the controller.

The PlayStation Eye has four-times the resolution, twice the frame-rate and double the sensitivity of the EyeToy on PS2, as well as a powerful microphone that can focus on certain audio inputs like you - discarding the need for a separate headset to communicate.

You can see it in action on Eurogamer TV, showing off its stop-motion capabilities, or pop into our PS Eye gallery to see what it looks like.

Keep an, er, eye out for our Eye of Judgement review soon.

First a price cut, now the Eye toy. Maybe Kaz Hirai was right. The next generation does not start until Sony says so.

    Not impressed.

How much is Eye of Judgement? :/
  • rhinoxious #3 4 years ago

As deep as your pockets go,

it's a trading card game so it costs plenty if you actually want to win.
  • dr_shambles #4 4 years ago

Cheap as chips. Hopefully the build quality will be as robust as the PS3.
  • Blerk #5 4 years ago

Quite cheap! Don't want one, but nice price.
  • spliffhead #6 4 years ago

I can see it now, wandering through PSN "Home" into a friend's "space" and realising he's left the "Eye" switched on whilst playing craps with a Jenna Jameson magazine...Oh wait that's not dice!
  • Darren #7 4 years ago

Let's hope this has more games that make use it than the 360's waste-of-space webcam, eh?
  • captainrentboy #8 4 years ago

Nice price, and it all sounds a bit better than Microsoft's, frankly piss poor, effort. Which now reflecting back on its release was definitely a case of ''Anything Sony can do, we can do too....Just not quite as well....And we'll never release any software that makes use of it:/''
  • DanC89 #9 4 years ago

Why not release it alone on the same date? v_v
  • Darren #10 4 years ago

Agreed, apart from the ability to see other Xbox Live gamers and them you, the 360's webcam is a poor effort and I'm so glad I didn't rush out and buy one on impulse. At least, you know that following the success of the original EyeToy that Sony will release games for the PS3 equivalent, that use it more inventive ways than being able see someone flash their dick at you online and/or use it for a Gamercard picture! ;)

I got a 360 cam cheap and use it as a webcam on my PC :)

"it's a trading card game so it costs plenty if you actually want to win."

Starter pack seems complete enough, though I've never played a battle cards game so I don't know if 38 cards is adequate, loads or barely enough.

Play.com has the starter pack listed for £60, with expansion packs mostly coming in at £7.

I'm seriously looking forward to Eye of Judgement. And I don't even own a PS3 yet. Still, I managed to pre-order it for £40. God bless Game's First To Play pre-order scheme.

Be my first camera-based peripheral, too, so that should be fun.
  • Steroyd #14 4 years ago

£60 isn't bad for EOJ + PS Eye will have to look at getting it.

I completely forgot MS launched something to rival eye-toy a year ago, how easily forgettable.

Bit weird releasing the software before the hardware that it needs to work is actually available.

If there's a code to get the free software, I wonder if that means that the PlayStation Store is going to be updated somehow. As far as I can tell there's no place to do any such thing at the moment.
  • mkreku #16 4 years ago

I'm actually looking forward to the review of this weird game.

It's all part of an evil plan to bring Sony to the collectible cards business. You'll see...

I was interested until I realised that the game has booster packs and so on, just like Magic... Hmmm....
  • pjmaybe #18 4 years ago

Only worth getting if you want the gurn cam functionality in Burnout Paradise methinks.

So...about as much use as the MS Camera for the 360 then..

Finally some concrete details about the PS EYE!
  • rhinoxious #20 4 years ago

Probbaly like most trading card games,

If you're going to play with just the starter packs it will be fun for a few games. But you'll soon find that the tactics are rather limited without more cards to select your decks from.

    Can you play it online?

Actually I understand that Hasbro make the cards. Sony just make the system/software. Not sure how the money is split between the 2.

Hope Trials of Topoq is better than the fairly awful Totemball on the 360, sounds fairly similar tho'.
  • JediMasterMalik #23 4 years ago

I doubt it will cost £60, it will be £50 rrp, including the Eye, I reckon.
  • Grogmonkey #24 4 years ago

Game had it listed at £40 until a couple of weeks ago, when they jacked the price up to £60. I imagine the price was changed for a reason (ie: the RRP was released to retailers), rather than just a guess.

I wouldn't expect the price to change any time soon.

Have they priced up the PS3 TV tuner or given a UK date?
  • Bigglesworth #28 4 years ago

The Trials of Topoq, a game where you have to roll a ball around maps using your body as the controller.

Hadn't heard of that one before, but it sounds like the version of Super Monkeyball included in the Sega Superstars EyeToy pack for the PS2, which was actually stonking good fun =)

brooza - I got a 360 cam cheap and use it as a webcam on my PC :)

the REAL HD era is upon us! (640x480?)
  • NotSoSlim #32 4 years ago

People moaning about a £24.99 camera that specs were released monts ago....

Deffo is flavour of the month if not year to attack Sony. They wil at least release games that will use the bloody camera.

    ITS £24.99!!! Probably £19.99 ONLINE

Be happy it has built in microphine as well.
  • JediMasterMalik #33 4 years ago

I was under the impresion that a webcam with the specs of the PSEye was normally alot more expensive than £30. WTF are people moaning about? Were they expecting a 1080p webcam?
  • NotSoSlim #34 4 years ago

People are always gonna moan. If they released a 1080p & charged £60+ people would say its a rip off.

Sony are in no win situation, Great price for a great device that will be supported.
  • GP79 #35 4 years ago

I agree with Enzima - when you mention this being available for 'a pony' surely you realise that new European law just sanctioned yesterday or something probably strictly dictates that you should now refer to it as as 'a young horse' i.e "fackin' hell guv I jus got a fackin' ps eye for a fackin' young 'orse. Please buck up your ideas EG or I shall be forced to take this to my European representative Olga Shitburger.

*and you do NOT want to fuck with 'the Shitburger' I kid thee not*

Yeah, because EyeToy: Kinetic was such a runaway success...
