Project Milo back on

"Ball is in Peter's court," says Greenberg.

Microsoft's on again off again relationship with Peter Molyneux's Kinect project Milo & Kate appears to be on again.

Last week at the TEDGlobal Conference in Oxford Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux said Microsoft had no plans to release Milo & Kate, according to a BBC report.

A fortnight previous, Microsoft mouthpiece Aaron Greenberg said "right now it's not a game" before changing his mind, after which Lionhead boss Molyneux waded in and said Greenberg's original comment was based on out-of-date information.

But according to Greenberg, who we spoke to last night, there's still a chance that Project Milo will be released.

"You can see that it's definitely not just a tech demo," Xbox product director Aaron Greenberg told Eurogamer in an interview published elsewhere on the site.

"They're building something that's pretty unique and compelling. We leave it up to Peter and his team to determine what that game is and when it would come to market. All we've said is that at this point in time it's not coming this holiday. But as you can see it's definitely quite a bit more than just a tech demo.

"What that turns out to be and how it gets brought to market all remains to be seen. We're fortunate to have one of the brilliant creators of our industry pushing the boundaries of creativity with this project. It's been exciting for people that have seen a preview of it. He's [Peter Molyneux] best to speak to about what this product will eventually become."

So it's Molyneux's decision whether it gets released?

"There are a whole variety of factors. But for now it's in Peter's hands. Peter serves as our creative director for all of our studios in Europe. What that turns out to be and all those details remain to be seen. It's not something we're bringing to market this holiday, so we're going to be a bit more vague about it than if it was launching in a couple of months."

What the fuck? Hasn't it been 'it'll release' 'no it won't' like 3 times now?

These kinds of software/hardware aren't aimed at existing owners I think.

Plus, in development, when creating new types of interaction, or routines such as AI, it really helps to do so in the context of a "product".

Ever wondered why those first party PS3 games looks so good? It's because they share code which too started out like tech-demo's.

Ball is in Peter's court, meaning: remember that demo from E3 2009? Well, the finished product is going to be nothing like that.

Christ, the thing's not even been properly announced yet and I'm already tired of it.

I wish someone would make their mind up, because its becoming a bit of a joke. Way to get as much press releases as possible, just keep doing a yoyo on if it will be released or not.

Next weeks news, Milo is being released and its better than anything anyone has ever seen ever... week after, oh its only a test... week after... so on ....

I tell you what Peter, how about you stfu until you have a game worth me reading about, milo isn't a game, its a tech demo, and the only reason were being told it might be is beacus microsoft have realised all they have to offer kinect buyers are buggy rip offs of 5yr old Wii games.

STFU Peter? At what point has Peter been spinning anything on Milo? All he's done is come in to say "its not coming out, its not a game" I thought?

Anyone else bored and want to get off this merry-go-round?

Don't get me wrong, if the tech works as Peter says then it opens up a whole slew of oppertunities. I just am sick to death of hearing about it. I feel the only reason they keep trotting it out is because it's the only MS studio 'game' that shows a step forward in games as an interactive medium with this camera. Every other thing I've seen so far could have been done with an eyetoy.

Per chance is Milo a project for MS's next console. Perhaps the confusion is more about not letting on that a next gen format is closer than we think. Don't want to hurt the current sales.

The fact people have reacted to the will they/won't they release of Milo (mainly I would say as an exercise in sarcasm and scorn) seems to have deluded Greenberg that there is a market for this, and the kerching factor has kicked in.

They really seem to think Kinect is so amazingly special, but when they charge a casual-alienating price and have yet to announce a single reason why ANY existing Xbox owner would be seen dead paying over a ton for it, they'll greenlight anything they think will sell... Clearly they think that people willing to buy/more likely re-buy an Xbox at £200 equates to people having money to burn. I'd say people DO have a certain amount of money to burn, but not with Kinect and a virtual grooming simulator in mind.

    Core OGTFO.

As far as i can see this whole story is Greenberg saying 'no we aren't releasing it' and then realising he is an asshat and has been backtracking ever since.

All Peter said was 'yes we are releasing it at some point'.

Then Eurogamer has made it into 3 different stories that has pissed off all the internet trolls..
