Portal XBLA coming next week News

Xbox 360 News by Ellie Gibson

17 October, 2008

Portal: Still Alive will finally be released into the Xbox Live Arcade wild next Wednesday.

As per the Gamerscore blog, it'll set you back 1200 points - that's just over GBP 10 / EUR 14 in the old money.

Portal, of course, is a shooter-puzzler type thing. Tom reckons it's marvellous - read his review to find out why.

Loved Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress.

Personally thought Portal was over-rated tosh. Absolutely awful game.

Personally, I thought Portal was extremely engaging, entertaining and well thought out. Lasted me a couple of days and was quality gaming from start to finish.

What a surprise - people like different things.

I quite liked it in the OB, it's a good deal on XBLA.

Wouldn't mind if they released this on PSN.

Incredibly epic game, but it's a shame it doesn't have a new storyline or anything. More GLaDOS anyday :)

Actually that's a good point - is this going to have a whole bunch of extra levels or is it just the Orange Box? If the latter, may as well go pick up the Orange Box really cheap.

If it's the former, what about if you already have the Orange Box and want to play the extra levels? Will they be downloadable?

They're downloadable only if you Portal on your PC. The extra levels aren't all that anyway! Can't see this selling too well. I've seen the Orange Box brand new for £13 before.

I loved it, completed it in one sitting - then had a mate come round and he completed it in one sitting too. So what I want to know is - What new stuff do I get to make me want to buy this again?

play.com are selling the orange box containing this and three much longer games and a multiplayer game for £18.99....or you can get the shortest game of all time for over half the price...

i loved portal, every second of it was incredible

So is this just the same as portal that comes with the OB, I thought it was a whole new game?

All this is is new levels which can be played in 2D here: http://portal.wecreatestuff.com/portal.php

It shouldn't really cost 1200MSP though since Critereon added bigger things to burnout for free and the new levels don't need to be stand-alone with so many people owning the orange box already!

There'll be a Hands On preview appearing this afternoon, by the way, explaining what you get for your 1200 Points.

Is this going to continue the story fromt he first portal? Are are you just another test patient going through some different maps?

Still, nice to see Valve releasing a sequel before 43 years after the first one.

Portal was one of the few games my fiance would watch me play. And sing a song about afterwards! =P

dr faulk, it's not a new portal game. it's the same game with a little extra content tacked on. no new story content. can't see the point - surely most people interested in this have already played it in the orange box.

Only good game? You, sir, are a mentalist. According to ign, it's the Portal we know and love with a bakers dozen or so user created maps from, I think, the Portal Flash Map Pack.

Where did they say that it's the same game? This keeps popping up but nobody posts sources. Ms said that it was a whole new game at the e3.

^ from the gamerscore blog linked in the article:

"In addition to the original award winning first-person puzzle experience, Aperture Science is proud to provide 14 new challenge maps exclusive to Xbox LIVE Arcade. Six advanced maps will also be provided to help guide you along the way."

so, the same game, plus the map pack from the flash game.

i guess the whole new game announced at E3 was yer actual portal 2, which this is not.

Hmm...still haven't played Portal, though I have spent a bit too much time on the Flash version at work.

I played HL2 on the PC and loved it to bits; is it worth getting this, or should I save up a few extra pennies and get the Orange box? Are the two episodes worth say £5 more (and me having to move from my sofa?)

Well the fact that eurogamer linked it too a review of Portal from the OB should be enough to tell you that it's just the same game. And it's just been well known if you've read any news source since this was first announced that there is no extra story content, there is just like a extra 12 seperate levels that will probably be rock soild (which is good) but none of the extra fun and engaging storyline driven bits (which is bad).

As much as i adore Portal, i won't be getting this, too me it's just for people who didn't buy the OB maybe cause they'd already played half-life 2 on the PC or something, but as already said it's overpriced at £10 when you can pick up OB so cheaply now.

kenbrilliant: If you loved HL2 then yes it's wroth the extra pennies, both Episodes together are about the same size as HL2 and continue it in the same fashion.

To me that reads like 20 new maps using the 'original award winning first-person puzzle experience'. I don't read that it will be the original game + tacked on maps from that.

Well, if you can point out to me where it says "FEATURING ALL THE ORIGINAL LEVELS". You may be right but this most certainly doesn't give any clarification. It just comments that it will use the same gameplay.

"In addition to"

That bit is fairly obvious..

"the original award winning first-person puzzle experience"

It's pretty hard to read this as anything other than PR speak for 'the original portal game'.

But besides that I'm fairly sure there has been an interview from someone at valve who made comment that it was the original portal game plus the flash map pack. They made comment on how there was no extension to the superb storyline, and faces in the general area of the interview became a little sadder.

I may have dreamt the last bit though. ;)

I adore Portal/OB and recently just got all the achievements for it on 360. I'm still thirsty for more, however whether or not this'll be worth 1200pts when I still need to get titles I don't already have like Geometry Wars 2, is another question.
