"No more" Burnout Paradise DLC

"We did WAY more than everyone else."

Criterion has said that there will be "no more" Burnout Paradise downloadable content as the two-year anniversary of the game's release rolls around.

"Please stop asking us for Burnout Paradise DLC. There will be no more! Sorry everyone! But we did WAY more than everyone else," the developer tweeted yesterday.

Admittedly one of the earlier tweets also said: "You must not read anything into these tweets. We not 'teasing' or 'announcing' anything game-related. Never on Twitter anyway."

But then the studio has used it in the past to rubbish rumours about its upcoming Need for Speed reboot.

Meanwhile, the developer can indeed claim to have done loads of downloadable content for Burnout Paradise, with a series of updates bearing funky codenames introducing new multiplayer modes, day/night cycles, motorbikes, dynamic weather, cars inspired by movies and TV shows, toy cars and even an entire new island.

Apparently the developer also considered boats, planes and even time travel at various points during DLC development.

Looks like they are all burnt out.
  • tobi #2 2 years ago

My favourite game this generation, the most fun I've had online.
  • kosigan #3 2 years ago

@tobi +1 me on that. I've played the offline game through twice to at least 100% too, under different IDs.

*applauds Criterion for all they done with Burnout*

Well done guys, you've shown how DLC SHOULD be done
  • Doctor_What #5 2 years ago

Of course, they might have done more because they didn't have any other ideas in the studio other than about making cars crash slowly...
  • maxnormal #6 2 years ago

Then release it all on PC you idiots.

I have Ca$h monies here for big surf island. You know you wants my Ca$h monies ....
  • Ignatius_Cheese #7 2 years ago

It certainly was very well supported by some quality DLC. Definitely deserve a lot of kudos, especially considering the first tranche of updates were all free.

Would have been nice to see more DLC obviously but am happy to wait for the next iteration of Burnout.
  • chukcyQ #8 2 years ago

I want it all on one DVD for let's say 10£.
  • sebsal #9 2 years ago

Still no Crash Party mode. My favorite mode of the previous games
  • JahB #10 2 years ago

That's good news - not that I didn't love Paradise, but I'm hoping they're gonna make a linear race/crash game like the "classic" Burnout games.
  • muscleblade #11 2 years ago

I thouth Burnout Revenge was better.
  • Murton #12 2 years ago

Criterion didn't just do DLC the way it should be the whole game the way it should be. They released a quality title and then expanded on it the way the fans wanted them to, releasing a lot of the early stuff for free too.

While I'm slightly disappointed that Burnout Paradise is done with in terms of expansions I think it's the right thing to do, there's not much else you could really do with it now. I just hope that Criterion can repeat or even better Paradise with the next iteration of the Burnout Licence, though they've gone through some troublesome times as a studio with a lot of people leaving they're still an extremely talented bunch who never fail impress.

Is version 1.9 the last title update for this game?

Why not make it a cool 2.0 before you sign off, eh Criterion?
  • Ziggy_badMonkey #14 2 years ago

Alas the reasoning for BP DLC was not to spearhead DLC or give anything back to the community.
3 months from ship there was nothing to move onto after finishing Paradise and you need a way of justifying 70 odd staff (the other 60 odd left or were made redundant after shipping)
They had no projects in the pipeline at all and you need to bring in revenue otherwise your shut down.
Paradise was way over budget and late and they needed some way to claw back all the lost revenue.
  • OllyJ #15 2 years ago

I liked it but the absent Crash Mode really hurt it overall for me.
  • Xeopuppy #16 2 years ago

I guess no Big Surf Island for PC...

    ...as I expected...

Yep, absolutely true, and I got minus points for saying it more bluntly up above!
  • Ignatius_Cheese #18 2 years ago

@ Doctor_What - Does bluntly equal bitterly...? ;oP

What was clearly an exercise of filling time between projects, recouping funds on an overbudget title and generally avoiding the chop ended up being an example of how precisely to do the afore-mentioned, hopefully turning a profit and what can be done with DLC.

    Burnout Paradise FOREVER!
  • paketep #20 2 years ago

Hey, Criterion, you promised LAN support and you didn't give us LAN support, so

    FUCK YOU
  • Doctor_What #21 2 years ago

@Ignatius_Cheese : Maybe! It's not a happy place to work and has problems with the leadership, but I feel like I bang that drum every time Criterion are mentioned, so I'll be quiet.

I've been meaning to get Big Surf Island for ages... don't know why I haven't, I loved the main game.
  • Zebula77 #23 2 years ago

Paradise was/is awesome and the DLC was meaty and definitely expanded heavily on an already fully packed game. My fave driving game, without a doubt.

...and Criterion, if you're reading this - please, PLEASE let us save the crash replays in the future. I had SOOOO many spectacular crashes I'd love to rewind and look at in slow-mo, spin the camera around, take snapshots etc.

Matter of fact, every driving game shold have a feature like that.
  • Ignatius_Cheese #24 2 years ago

@ Doctor_What - Nah, not at all. Its good to hear an insider voice to dispell any myths that ardent fans create. We've often joked that Alex Ward is a bit of a bastard so glad to hear its true :D
  • Ryze #25 2 years ago

Shame they didn't fix the right-analogue stick, or introduce a rotating map.

No sale on your DLC offerings, as the navigational flaws ruined my enjoyment of the game.
  • Anthony_UK #26 2 years ago

Sod Need For Speed, do a Re-boot of Burnout!

Not quite back to the original 'how did they get away with it' Thrill Drive clone, something more along the lines of Burnout 3: Takedown.

    Surely thats what everyone wants?
  • secombe #27 2 years ago

All that DLC but not possibly the most requested game mode since Point of Impact...a classic Crash party mode.
  • makeamazing #28 2 years ago

Perhaps they are at the point that the DLC is not making the development return and to be honest a new game is always going to make them more money... good on them for sticking at it for so long though.
  • metalangel #29 2 years ago

Definitely one of the games of this generation, adding new features with each patch, culminating in the bikes. Haven't bought cops and robbers nor the island but again these seem like fun extras rather than something deliberately hacked out to be sold to you for extra CAHS MONEYS.
  • BOFH_UK #30 2 years ago

Hmm, in two minds about this. On the one hand I loved the game, and the DLC that was offered was varied and interesting (even if overpriced for some stuff, toy cars and the movie stuff spring to mind). They supported their game well and created interesting stuff like the video podcasts to keep hype going and tease new features. Top marks.

BUT they really annoyed me a great deal by doing a 180 on Big Surf Island. I've got no problem with paying for DLC, especially big, content-packed DLC, but to say for months that a particular item was going to be free then turn around and charge for it stinks to me of trying to boost sales of the game as people buy in the expectation that there's more to come. Basically, if you're going to announce something is going to be free than make DAMN sure it's going to be free before you say anything. Also a lot of the paid for DLC just wasn't very good when you got right down to it - the offline party pack is a great example.

*shrug* I dunno, I guess it's a 50/50 on Burnout Paradise DLC from me: some stuff done very well, some not so much.
  • DiamondIce #31 2 years ago

To me the DLC was the best value of any game.

Burnout Paradise is such good fun and is a real feel-good type of game.
  • manveruppd #32 2 years ago

Another frustrated scream for all the DLC to be ported to PC!
  • Diabeu #33 2 years ago

best online racer ever created, bah, you don't even need to race, just ride around the city smashing with friends and wrecking chaos
almost like destruction derby in a city scale, something like that
  • Les #34 2 years ago

They never did introduce a race restart 'button' did they? I loved Burnout 3, one of the best arcade racers ever, but the open city structure really put me off (played the demo back in the day). Like with Motorstorm, I love to play this type of game pass the controller style, see if you and your friends can get the gold medals or whatever they use for each event. Having to go waste time driving back after a failed attempt would be an issue for me.
  • Les #35 2 years ago

    "yes, they did."

They did? That's good news, thanks! :)
