Nintendo wins otherwise-slow July NPDs

WSR and NCAA top sales, Wii sells 508k.

Nintendo had the best of another bad month for videogame sales in the US during July, topping both the hardware and software charts.

Wii Sports Resort, bundled with the Wii MotionPlus, was the biggest-selling game, doing around 508,200 units, although combined sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of NCAA Football 10 (613,900) would have toppled it if chart-compiler NPD didn't separate out the individual SKUs.

Nintendo can probably live with that though, having also taken every other place in the top ten except for eight (Fight Night Round 4) and 10 (EA Sports Active - and that a Wii exclusive), and with the DS and Wii the two biggest sellers in hardware terms.

Elsewhere, sales of Xbox 360 were at 202,900 while PS3 managed 121,800, but the industry was a bit depressed overall, with software sales down 26 per cent year on year and hardware down 37 per cent.

I'm struggling to think of anything original or witty to say. The Wii is a juggernaut. Wii software is its ammunition and potential hardcore gamers are being decimated by this onslaught of Wii games.

Sometimes I wish I was more mass-market, rather than a niche Xbox gamer. I feel like I am missing out on something that 500k+ gamers know. My Wii hasn't been turned on more than twice since January. 8

I can't remember the last time I bought a boxed game. Christmas probably. Still haven't played them yet either (Fallout 3 and MGS4 being two of them). Too busy with Monkey Island atm.

Why Cant eurogamer report these numbers with at least a bit of analysis ?

Anyhow All consoles sales were down from June 09. Only the X360 managed a 5% increase. All year over year sales were down by an average 40% (Wii having the biggest drop @ 55%), the X360 was down 1% from last year's July. I think it's quite obvious Nintendo and Sony need those price cuts ASAP. The 360 will have to follow suit if they want to keep their 2nd position.

Casual giant crushes competition in slow month with no releases. Colour me shocked.

From the title, it reads like the Wii sold 500k, which is not true (it only refers to WSR). Also, the news makes no mention of the actual sales of the console. They might want to correct that.

"Charts quoted here - http://ww w.joystiq.com/2009/08/13/july-n... say that no-one managed an increase in sales, but could be different figures. "

Cheers. Poorish Wii figures, awful Sony ones, decent 360 sales, relatively speaking. That recession sure is biting home though.

    @moggsy

The article I posted uses only the NPD Official figures for comparison not their estimated ones by the way so the percentagesof increase/decrease are pretty much official NPD data. I dont trust VGcharts own estimates either to be honest but the numbers here are NPDs not theirs.

Gosh, Nintendo after months without a first party title and dipping sales suddenly return to form after a highly anticipated big name first party title is released.

Come on people, it's one thing to have thought the Wii was doomed when it was quite clearly because Nintendo hadn't released anything recently - but it's quite another to be surprised by the turnaround.

WMP will ensure mad Christmas sales, further boosted by New Super Mario Bros Wii. In between we might see another slight dip. It's not difficult.

"these figures have to be worrying for SONY as they trail 360 by almost 85,000 and it puts into perspective the japan market where ps3 advantage is only 3 or 4 thousand a week(AS PS3 FANS CONTIUALLY TOUT!)."

Yeah i thought I was the only one that noticed this.
