Mercury 2 PSP demo

With new 2.8 firmware.

Sony Japan has released a Japanese PSP demo version of Mercury Meltdown along with new firmware for its shiny handheld.

The 2.8 firmware adds RSS video support, amongst other things, and should work on your system whichever region it's from - although US and European versions of the downloadable should be made available shortly if you're anxious about it.

Meanwhile, the Mercury Meltdown demo can be downloaded either direct to your PSP or through your PC.

If you're planning to do the latter, you'll need to drop the file in a "/PSP/GAME/UCJS10043" directory on your Memory Stick.

We'll let you know when the 2.8 firmware's available from Sony's US and European sites. Reports earlier this week suggested there'd be a World Tour Soccer 2 demo at the same time, so we'll let you know about that, and any news on an English Mercury Meltdown demo, soon.

Does this imply that 2.71 is close to being hacked?

Anyway, I'm quite tempted by this as I want to play that Mercury 2 demo. Best way of getting people to upgrade the moment the new firmware is out.

    I want more demos!

I thought 2.71 had been torn open already? Obviously it has been hacked enough that Sony need to provide another update. How long til this one is hacked you reckon? :)

Oooh...RSS Video support. No need to buy some stupidly expensive "Location Free" jobby now, YAY!

    2.71 was hacked weeks ago.

    "2.71 was hacked weeks ago."

    I thought that was 2.5 and 2.6?

Well, I like the new art style, but the game still doesn't do it for me, I'm afraid.

Nice to get a demo, though. More please!

Hopefully the devhook people can get 2.8 on my 1.5 PSP, as I would very much like to play the Mercury demo.

It's only a matter of time York, i waited 2 months to play Monster Hunter Freedom on my 1.5 psp. Now i have too many others to complete first, still at least it plays now. :)
    Devhook rocks.

    Off topic but interesting:

"European Commission antitrust officials are conducting a probe into the licensing practices of the groups backing HD DVD and Blu-ray... It is unclear from reports if that [security system] license is also under review, or if the European Commission is only focused on possible anti-competitive issues between the two camps"

    Well ... off topic anyway.

think enforced price drops on blu-ray devices...
  • jellyhead #13 6 years ago

I'd have thought the seeming lack of interest would have brought about a price cut anyway. oh, no it wouldn't, it's Sony "You are all too poor and stupid for us to care about anymore". :)

    Let there be Devhook.

Another game where the analogue nub makes me wish I was playing with a proper analogue stick. Half of the challenge shouldn't be the hardware you're using. Camera's a complete twat as well.

Not bad, this demo, though I'm going to look for that option to get rid of the black border soon now. It takes a while before the attraction of the game hits me, but fortunately they put in a decent amount of levels (but I would have liked to have some larger ones).

I think they did a decent job at getting a more traditional kind of 'game' out.

But I agree that the nub control takes a bit to get used to in this game. What really didn't appeal to me though was the music. Blech. But it looks very polished and the gameplay is pretty good, and there's a lot of different puzzle elements that seem to work. I like the ghost a lot, that will get you a lot of replay value, and they seem to have been successful with getting different goals into each level too, which is good.

All in all pretty good, but I'm not sure yet I would get this at full price ...

I love how seamless the experience of putting a demo on a PSP is. Well done Sony! Now onto the game...

Yikes, what an eyesore. Somehow it is even uglier than the first Mercury game - I didn't imagine that was possible. It's a shame, there's clearly been a lot of work put into the polish etc, but it all the wrong kind of polish. All the... distracting wobbly crap all over the screen, it is fucking horrendous. Also the pace and tone of the audio seems completely at odds with play. Like the first Mercury, and also like Pool Paradise for that matter, this game badly needs a decent artist or graphic designer to go over the whole product. The new "style" is a huge turnoff.

Being an old git I just can't get what RSS does? Is it simply like a ticker? As per that line at bottom of XBMC screen? Sorry but it really is something I just can't get even with that ever so clever google button.

The huge black border around the blob is an anti-aliasing disaster. It plays nice enough, and I'm sure the difficiculty curve will be better this time, but it doesn't look as good as the original. I'm sure someone here said the cell shading e4ffect can be turned off, I bloody hope so.
