Metroid Prime 3 at E3?

No denial from Nintendo.

IGN's Nintendo editor is claiming that Metroid Prime 3 for Revolution will be "fully playable" at this year's E3.

Speaking on his blog comments page as part of a piece about how much he's looking forward to Too Human, Matt Casamassina said he expects it to be "one of, if not the must-have game of E3 2006".

Nintendo's yet to announce its E3 line-up - and frankly isn't expected to make it clear beforehand which Revolution games will be playable.

Revolution certainly will be there though, and Metroid Prime's known to be a favourite way of showing off how the freestyle controller works, with several journalists at last September's Tokyo Game Show given the chance to play a modified version of Metroid Prime 2 using the controller - although Nintendo chose not to offer that demo to other TGS attendees.

And of all the games mentioned in connection with the system, Metroid Prime was the only one to feature in tech demo form at last year's E3, back before we knew anything about the controller.

As we close in on this year's show, however, for now Nintendo's keeping schtum about Metroid Prime 3. "It's pure rumour and speculation - we haven't officially confirmed what Revolution titles will be playable at this year's E3," said a spokesperson this morning.

"Isn't that IGN lad famous for making up facts? "

Nah, you're confusing him with spong.

"I bet you it won't be playable"

I bet it will. The whole point in not showing stuff for this long is so they can properly show and make playable stuff all in one go (as opposed to just showing pre-rendered nonsense like the other two did).

"Revolution will launch in October in Japan. "

Well they've said they're aiming for a worldwide launch, so that'd be good for me.

My money is on them doing a DS. Announcing it properly at e3, then laucnhing a month or two later.

    I still haven't played MP2. :-)

@Blerk - Picked out my copy at the weekend. Never got round to playing it. Doubt I will tbh... :o)

    Talking of which:

Metroid Prime's known to be a favourite way of showing off how the freestyle controller works, with several journalists at last September's Tokyo Game Show given the chance to play a modified version of Metroid Prime 2 using the controller

I think many games could benefit from being retro-fitted to the revmote controller. eg conducting ballads with the wand rather than using the c-stick and steering the boat with gestures in Zelda:WW.

Metroid Prime was in my humble opinion one of the best games i have played in the past years. Expecting a lot for metroid prime 3.

This is not suprising. I mean, think about it. MP2 was released a year and a half ago. They might've begun the designing of MP3 even before MP2 was ready. They better have some (playble) result by now, especially because it's rumoured to be a launch title. Another thing is that yeah, even though it's for a completely new console, the hardware is much like Gamecube's.

I'm not going to be surprised even if they said Mario 128 (or whatever it's called nowadays) is playable.

I should think so man! I mean, what was the last major Nintendo release for GC

It would be nice if the big N could surprise us with an earlier-than-expected launch (not least because if Nintendo launch around the time of PS3, it'll be bad for both Rev and PS3 and the videogame industry as a whole).

But then again, this is Nintendo we're talking about - not really famed for delivering product on time...

Is it still uncool to say that Metroid is the most overrated franchise in gaming history?

Yes? Ok.....Metroid roxxx!1!!11!!1 The lock on system is genius!!11

You mean you don't think the 2D games were among the best ever 2D platformers created?
I think you're at odds with most other people then :/

It's almost inevitable that it had to go 3D at some stage, and while the transition could have easily killed the series, it didn't, because the developers did something right.
It doesn't try to be something it's not (well, maybe apart from the DS game) - it's a first-person action/adventure game with platforming elements. And like most Nintendo franchises the gameplay and presentation are top notch.

Dunno. Never played the 2d games. I personally HATED the 3D one though and couldnt understand why everyone was ranting about it so much.

I'll give it another go with the rev controller, see how it works out i guess (but i'll be renting not buying).

As for the 2d games, I guess I'll give them a bash on the rev's download service when it comes out. But as for being the "best 2d games ever" I'd imagine i'd be hard pushed to agree when compared to super mario world (for instance). But I've not played them, what do i know?

Smelly! Play the games FIRST, then slag them off it needs be. Frankly they are some of the best 2D gaming around.

FFS! They're right, nintendo fans are the worst when it comes to seeing insults against a game when there are none.

Did I slag off the 2d game? No. I slagged off the 3D game!

All I said was that as a 2d platformer it'd have to be REALLY good to beat mario world.

That is NOT slagging it off FFS!

    The 2D Metroids were great.

    The 3D Metroids were incredible.

MP3 will possibly (probably) be the game to make me take the plunge and purchase a Rev. One of my most wanted.
  • Milbe #18 6 years ago

For me, MP3 is _the_ reason to buy a Revolution.

/bonks smelly over head repeatedly with large rubber mallet

I'm slogging my way through MP:Hunters at the moment, so the thought of yet another ancient civilisation with ancient lore and ancient artifacts and vicious pronged fartbags and endless scanning really doesn't appeal. Oh, not to mention tickboxed sandy, snowy, lavaly, futuristicly, predictably themed worlds. MP1 & 2 were *so* very good - but I'd like a bit of a change.

MPn with wand+visuals_x_1.5 (fantastic though they've been) doesn't rock my boat.
  • Dirtie #21 6 years ago

But that's perhaps because everything so far has been set on the planet Zebes (correct me if I'm wrong). I'm agreeing that I would like to see a different environment this time around, a lot like what happened with Metroid Fusion (set in a space station the entire time, rather than a planet).
  • Megapocalypse #22 6 years ago

I loved the slow pace of the last two games. MP1 is my favourtie game of this generation. I loved scanning everything to get even a small amount of information. I loved having to explore each area fully on my own and not being led by the hand. I thought the controls were near perfect (appart from in a couple of boss battles) for the game. I didn't even have that much problem with all the back tracking or the difficulty level.

What I really didn't like was the punishment for dieing. PUT SOME FUCKING CHECKPOINTS IN!!! At least before / after a boss. There is nothing fun about playing for 45 minutes without saving and then dieing and having to go all the way back to the last save and having to redo everything again. By all means keep the save points, but just have some check points everynow and then. Resi 4 did this perfectly imo.

Or just give multiple difficulty options. I really don't have the time/patients these days to be stuck on unfair bosses for ages.
  • BartonFink #23 6 years ago

And that is the very reason I will never play one of them again. The save system just sucks if they fix that then I'm sold. Loved MP up to a point and then just had to give up out of sheer joypad bashing fury.

"Great Revolution-playing monkeys at E3, showcasing Metroid Prime 4.5-
    No denial from Nintendo"
  • oerhoert #25 6 years ago

Ah, stop it. Metroid Prime was a brilliant game, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes was a brilliant game, Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion and Metroid Zero Mission were all brilliant. I'm enjoying Metrid Prime Hunters lots right now -- even though you can see where they've simplified it a bit, it's still tight design and high fun factor. I therefore really can't see Metroid Prime 3 being anything other than rock solid, with the attention it gets from Nintendos quality assurance and the experience of the studio.

It also probably won't have the lock-on anymore, and even though it was perfect for the originals it will be a whole new ball game with the new controller.

    Count me in as excited.
  • Triggerhappytel #26 6 years ago

"But that's perhaps because everything so far has been set on the planet Zebes (correct me if I'm wrong)."

Super Metroid was set on Zebes. Metroid Prime was set on Tallon IV. Metroid Prime 2 was set on Aether.

I know Metroid 2 was set on the Metroid's homeworld, but can't remember the name of it (it's not Zebes though). Don't know about Metroid 1 or Metroid Prime: Hunters, or the GB Metroids.

  • oerhoert #27 6 years ago

"Metroid 2" was a "GB Metroid" though, wasn't it? And there weren't any other "GB Metroid" as far as I know. :) (I take it you meant the GBA titles perhaps.)

Anyhow. Fusion is on a space station, Zero Mission is set wherever Metroid (1) was set as it's a remake. Hunters is set on lots of different planets, and you travel between them at will with your ship (even though it's at first limited to one planet it soon diversifies). I don't know if any of them is Zebes or Tallon IV, but I guess they're not.
  • MightyPenguin #28 6 years ago

The first one was set on Zebes as well, and the second was set on SR-388 (indeed the metroid homeworld). Fusion was set in orbit above SR-388, I believe.

MP2 was one of my favourite game. In fact, probably my favourite game bar Pikmin 2. WW was too short, I have a SNES and a copy of SMW, so Sunshine is out. The GC Fire Emblem didn't have the flair of the GB's. Skies of Arcadia was a DC port. Eternal Darkness wasn't up to much visually, or interface wise. Pikmin was /far/ too short.

Even the first MP didn't draw me in the same way as 2. I remain firm in the view that the Sanctuary area is one of the most beautiful things ever put to polygon.

To be honest, the only thing Prime is missing is... Metroids! Christ, it feels like the eponymous enemy is little more than a footnote these days. Which is a pity, especially when they're so atmospheric. And by atmospheric I mean scary. And by scary I mean terrifying.
  • Dirtie #29 6 years ago

Yeah, I just love the way they appear out of nowhere and leech on to your head :p
