Mercury headed to Wii

Ignition at full tilt.

Having already appeared on PSP and PlayStation 2, excellent puzzle game Mercury Meltdown is on its way to Nintendo Wii next spring.

Mercury Meltdown Revolution, it'll be called, and it will at long last give players the chance to direct the liquid mercury blob around mazes using a tilt sensor - the one built into the Wii controller.

"The mercury series was originally developed with a tilt controller in mind," Ignition's Peter Rollinson points out; "the Wii has made this possible and the outcome provides the player with unprecedented control and accuracy."

It will also support 480p resolution for those of you who managed to get hold of a component cable, along with the Wii classic controller and even the GameCube pad if you prefer to play it that way.

You can see some screenshots elsewhere on the site.

And for more on how ace Mercury Meltdown was on the PSP, be sure to read our review.

There goes another reason to buy a PSP!

hmmm... it makes me wonder if the rumours are true if Sony took out tilt for the PSP.

If So then Sony were idiots.

Mercury with tilt is going to be amazing :)

A tilt sensor in a hand held would of made it a bit of a bitch to see the screen when you keep tilting it away from your eyes.

    "It will also support 480p".......

Why - do most Wii game not?

Actually, the rumours were that the original Mercury was going to bundle with a tilt sensing USB add-on. Which would not really work, because of how much the screen reflects ambient light. Think about it, how much fun would it be tilting your PSP around, if you can't even see what's going on in the screen?

Great! £40 to tilt a blob of shite around a maze, otherwise known as 'reason 291 not to buy a cocking PSP'

Awesome! This was one of the few games that made me consider buying a PSP (which I eventually never did), but now that it comes to Wii, I won't regret not getting a PSP twice!

Good luck playing with your Wii on the bus, then.

EDIT: Just realised what I just wrote :/

    this is gonna rock!

Hmmm... guess mercury being on the Sony's PS Shop is only a stone's throw away. :)
  • coojam #14 5 years ago

Surely a great PS3 title too?
  • spongebob #15 5 years ago

Idea is superb. Graphics are total shite.
  • JediMasterMalik #16 5 years ago

Jesus guys. Most people look for reasons TO buy something, not for reasons NOT TO. Seriously, it's getting pathetic. Don't want a PSP? Don't get one, it's hardly a difficult decision.

ForbiddenForest: "£40 to tilt a blob of shite around a maze"

LOL! When you put it like that, that sounds like a killer game concept. Sign me up!

    Really interested indeed...
Maybe they'll even publish it at a budget price?

Although I have noticed that all Wii games cost at most €52 over here...
    Very nice...

Is it just me, or do Wii screenies seem to show up faster than PS3/360 ones? Something to do with ease of development/getting something presentable running sooner maybe?
  • Darkedge #20 5 years ago

tilt sensor was never planned for PSP - they did want to do an add on for mercury psp that was a tilt sensor though.

"Idea is superb. Graphics are total shite."

I don't know, they look like they have a lot of potential once in motion. Graphics will be the least of concerns when you start playing it anyway.

"A tilt sensor in a hand held would of made it a bit of a bitch to see the screen when you keep tilting it away from your eyes."

There are already portable console games with tilt sensors built into the cartridges and they seem to play without problems.

And if they set the tilt sensor to be sensitive enough the tilting can be achieved with very slight movements that wouldn't affect your view of the screen.

Wouldn't be very portable then though. You would have to be very still while playing. No rocky bus or train rides for you.

It's because they can advance production by using the already well-known GC devkit, and then refine details like graphics later on.

I still say those shots are from the psp version (thus why they're so wide).

"I don't know, they look like they have a lot of potential once in motion. Graphics will be the least of concerns when you start playing it anyway."

Graphics on the first Mercury ok, at least the general design was in the right ballpark. The new cel-shaded look is utter bollocks (as was seen on the sequel this year).
  • soanso #27 5 years ago

Mercury looks pretty good. It's interesting if they let you use the GC controller for it too. I wish there were more Wii games that would look at doing that.
Having watched the video of Metal Slug and all it's new fangled controls shoehorned into an old skool game, it just looks awful.
I hope the Wii isn't just going to end up clogged up with stupid versions of games like that.

The Wii supports widescreen TV mode (16:9 - same ratio as the PSP screen) - those are definitely Wii screenshots. You can see the bump-mapping in some of them - there was no bump-mapping in the PSP version.
