New Spyro game announced

Stars Gary Oldman. Yes, really.

Good news for Spyro fans - the little purple dragon is returning in a new adventure for PS2, GameCube, Xbox, DS and GBA this autumn.

The Legend of Spyro A New Beginning will "focus heavily on dynamic action and fast-paced combat" and will reveal the true story of Spyro's origins. Expect upgradeable breaths, exciting new ground-to-air melee combos, lots of boss battles and that kind of thing.

In fact, we got the chance to take a look at the PS2 version of A New Beginning recently, and it's looking like it could be a lot of fun. The developers have clearly taken a few hints from the likes of Ratchet and Clank and the first Jak and Daxter game, judging by the expansive environments and souped-up attack options, and the game is designed to appeal to hardcore platform completists as well as little kiddies.

It'll feature voiceovers by leading Hollywood stars - Elijah "Frodo" Wood is the new voice of Spyro, and David "Joe Dirt" Spade will take on the role of his sidekick, Sparx the dragonfly. Gary "lots of drug dealers and Harry Potter's stepdad or something" Oldman will play Spyro's mentor, Ignitus.

The Legend of Spyro A New Beginning is out in October.

Aw, you may be right, _wii, but alot of those kids who recieve Spyro go on to become fans. I'm one of them. I look forward to this. Kinda wish it was next-gen, though.

Oi you, I stand by my belief that the first Spyro game on the PSX was really good. It was also quite a challenge to fully complete the game.

Shame it got stupidly easy from the 2nd game onwards :(

"Because both Wood and Oldman do anything for money! "

Like most celebrities appearing in games, movies, TV shows, etc.... so what's your point ?

Wonders how this franchise is still in existence...oh right because of old dears at Christmas and Spoilt kids...doubt ether come on Eurogamer but I'm sure they are excited.

Beano, I wasn't replying to you, I was replying to disc. I wasn't aware that I was making a point, apart from stating the obvious.

"I was making a point, apart from stating the obvious."

I'm pretty sure that these chaps are actors... who get paid to act. It's their job. Why shouldn't they do it. It's the same as actors working in animated films. What's the problem? Because it's a children's game?

  • Aretak #10 6 years ago

It's not a "problem" -- it's just a comment on the fact that some actors will do anything for the right money (and Oldman at least has admitted this is the case), while others have higher standards for what they'll agree to lend their talents to.

Anyone know who's developing this one? Is it Eurocom again? I liked the last one (Hero's Tail), way better than the disappointing Enter the Dragonfly.

I'm a spyro fan of the first two at least - they were very solid platformer/adventure games with fluid controls and loads of daft characters to bump into. Unfortunately the PS2 offering totally missed the point. Maybe they can fix it for the PS3?

...that said I never tried Hero's Tail
