Silent Hill DVD out in August News

PlayStation 2 PSOne PSP
News by Ellie Gibson

3 July, 2006

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that the Silent Hill movie will be out on DVD, UMD and Blu-Ray this summer.

All three versions are due to arrive in US shops on August 22nd, with the DVD priced at $28.95 (£16ish). It includes special features such as a six-part production diary - you'll get to learn all about the origins of Silent Hill, the casting and set building processes, the movie's stars and the stunts they had to do, and how those crazy creatures were brought to life.

There's no word on what special features you can expect from the Blu-Ray edition - but they have announced it'll set you back $38.95 (£21). And, of course, you'll need a spanky new Blu-Ray player to watch it, unless you're waiting for the PS3 to arrive in November.

Well, it's good news only because it is still probably one of the better game to movie translations that have been done. The film was still a little... umm... obvious, but I guess that's what you get for really relying on the existing games for your ideas.

Note: DVD will be fine for me, kthnx.

Great News, I'm looking forward to it! As Kami said, it's one of the best game adaptations. It's almost a masterpiece for me...(well, I'm a huge SH fan :D )

Why in the hell they release a Blu-Ray version when an actual BD Player isn't out yet? That doesn't make any sense!

LOL for the same reason they are releasing it on UMD ! because they are Sony and they have to support their format even when no one else wants too!

Am I the only person who thought that, one of the better game to movie translations or not, this film was still completely terrible?

I didn't think it was terrible. Just average.

But then, I still have Alone in the Dark echoing in the halls of my mind... Silent Hill is an oscar-winning epic in comparison...

It's just a question of angles...

I think it's too easy to be generous towards Silent Hill because, as has already been pointed out, it's a masterpiece compared to pretty much every other game adaptation. But put against any 'normal' film (if you know what I mean), it's just an overlong, shambolic mess.

Sorry, I'll stop going on about it now.

Compare it to other game movies and its amazing. Compare it to most other modern Hollywood produced horror movies and again it comes out looking great. Compare it to the classics of the genre and its an utter mess.

I enjoyed it for what it was and I loved it for the camera angle cameos and PH-chan.

I thought it captured the atmosphere of the game superbly. It really felt like Silent Hill. Not too sure about the acting though, and I found it strange that some parts of the story were repeadetly talked about whereas the more complicated parts of the story were only touched upon. Like they tried to dumb down the delivery of the story but ran out of time!

One of the better horror films of recent years though (first Saw was pretty good aswell).

What makes me laugh, at the moment, is that all the Blu-ray films being released, so far, are single layer encoded with Mpeg2. This tends to leave not much room for features. Dual layer Blu-ray films aren't expected until Christmas.

It's not out anywhere yet. The date they've given IS a US release.
I thought it was a fantastic film that stuck to the game material for a lot of stuff. Using the game music was genius. The only dodgy parts of the film were Sean Bean's, that felt a little tacked on and unnecessary. SH has certainly been the closest to sticking to the core material, whereas other adaptations will abandon most storylines, characters, music and imagery, SH sticks to it.

I'm with you Aysir.

Aye - SB was tacked on as they thought it needed some male roles injected into an all female cast.

Out of interest, why didn't people like it? My guess is if you hate the SH games then you'll hate the film. For all intents and purposes, it WAS SH1, including alot of shot-for-shot scenes. I'm a HUGE silent hill fan, and i liked it.

I'm sorry but this film was a rotten mess of a movie, best of the game to movie conversions, possibly yes, good film, no.

Might import it, it doesn't even come out to cinemas until August 30th in Australia.

Bluray though, even though it will be a collectors edition when Bluray falls flat on its arse like Betamax, I just can't afford to spend money on a bluray movie.

Or a bluray player, when I already have a dvd player and HD dvd lined up

Rioa, that was my problem with it. It was TOO much like SH1. Far too much. And yet... it wasn't SH1.

Certainly not the worst horror film I've seen though. In comparison to Resi Apocalypse and other titles, SH creams the competition. On the standard of other films... hmm. It's average at best.

But note I said "average", not "shit".
