New Oblivion content: Razor

Coming soon.

Good news for those of you who've exhausted your horses, Orreries, Wizard's Towers, Thieves' Dens and, you know, the rest of Oblivion: Bethesda's announced the next round of downloadable content for its gigantic Xbox 360 and PC RPG.

Called Mehrunes' Razor, it's a $2.99 quest to overcome a gigantic dungeon in the lost Ayleid city Varsa Baalim, where a rogue Telvanni arch-mage (I'm sure this makes sense to somebody) is after the Daedric artefact, Mehrunes Razor, which he wants to use to topple the Empire. With one-hit kills, which is what you get from the titular Razor - unlike other Razors we've encountered, which crash all the time and have rubbish text message interfaces.

Anyway, Mehrunes Razor isn't out yet, but is listed as "coming soon" on OblivionDownloads.com, which undoubtedly means it's also on its way to Xbox 360's Marketplace. We'll let you know when it materialises, and in the meantime check that site for more background and screenshots of the game in action.

  • Roamer #4 6 years ago

Please stop buying these things - it'll only encourage more...
  • richardiox #5 6 years ago

So 4 sets of DLC and still no patch. Sign of the times.

'Please stop buying these things - it'll only encourage more...'

Gosh, yes. We don't want any more downloadable features for our games! We don't want them to improve or expand any once the game's been completed!!!!!

    Tit.
  • EffEmmGee #7 6 years ago

    Razr...crashes? does not compute!

Out of all the phones ive had (about 3 nokias and a samsung) the Razr is the one phone thats NOT crashed and ive not had problems with. And for under £100 new it was a bargain!

I got the strictly LE Blue one and my fiance the Black one.

Anyways back on topic, im looking forward to this on 360!

I love these downloads and have to admit that I've downloaded all of the quest-based ones (Orrery, Wizard's Tower, Thieve's Den) so far. Haven't touched the ridiculously overpriced horse armour though. I might well be tempted to soon: I still have the horse that I was given waaaaay back at the beginning of the game, and i'm rather attached to him. Wouldn't want anything to happen to the little bugger. Pretty weird that the armour costs more than these substantial quest downloads though. Surely they could reduce the price pretty easily on Marketplace? It's so glaringly overpriced, especially when you take into consideration that for the price of 2 horse armours you can get a full game such as Geometry Wars!
  • Thamuhacha #9 6 years ago

I didn't download the horse armour.

    Orrery - rubbish
    Frostspire - average
Thieves den - pretty good, but didn't exactly rejuvenate the game

The new one sounds good. It sounds like the kind of downloadable content that we should be getting: big new quests and areas.

Coming soon to a console near you, play as you go games. A little clock in the corner counts how much it is costing you, going up 10p every 10 minutes.

Only 5p for every ten minutes the game is paused and 1p every ten minutes the game isn't being played.

Also coming to a console near you, being pwned on online deathmatch by all the rich kids that can afford to buy all the upgrades and bonus guns.

So... why are we paying fifty quid per game if they are going to charge for updates too?

"Coming soon to a console near you, play as you go games. A little clock in the corner counts how much it is costing you, going up 10p every 10 minutes."

We've heard this before, and it was boring then. And just as unlikely, because the people that makes games know we won't buy them if they tried stuff like that.

It appears that only trolls are stupid enough to think they will.
  • Thamuhacha #13 6 years ago

    >the people that makes games know we won't buy them if they tried stuff like that.

I'll bet the price of all of the upgrades (after the horse armour debacle) was lower than they originally planned for a start.

Realistic pricing is what's needed. Not all this "All downloadable content is bad" ranting

Sigh. Might have to use that little 'ignore poster' button for the first time at this rate. The downloads I've actually bought have added nice little extras to the game and they're sensibly priced. The one that wasn't - the aforementioned and much ridiculed horse armour - was one that I decided on my own (wow, imagine that!) to not download because it wasn't worth it.

If publishers start to charge for the 'upgrades and bonus guns' to make online players more powerful, they'll find themselves with no one playing their games.

Give us gamers a bit more credit. We're not ALL stupid you know. Although some of us obviously have a hard time putting 2 and 2 together and making 4.

Well, you are ignoring the fact that we used to get these sort of upgrades and downloadable content for free before the advent of Live! Marketplace. Factor in the already ridiculously high priced 360 games (and console games in general, for that matter) and I think it's clear that Bethesda, no doubt spurred on by Microsoft, is offering a pretty sucktastic deal.

    And, please, don't throw me the "don't buy it if you don't want it"-argument. The main qualms most sceptics have against these kinds of downloads are;

    - They used to be free.
    - Why so many updates so soon after the game's release? Were they withheld to bolster Bethesda's coffers later on?
    - This sets a precedent for later games - a carte blanche for publishers to release under-featured games.
    - The price for console games, and 360 games in particular, are already outrageously high. This doesn't help.
    - For PC gamers, these updates are frustrating so long as major bugs and glitches go unrepaired.

Sorry guys, but this is a road you don't want too many publishers to go down. This is not a consumer-friendly way of providing gaming content.
  • mentat #16 6 years ago

'So... why are we paying fifty quid per game if they are going to charge for updates too?'

They aren't updates. They're add ons.

You don't expect EA to give you expansion packs for the Sims for free do you?
    No. Can it then.
  • Cloudane #17 6 years ago

I need a patch instead because I cannot finish the Mage, Thieves and Fighters Guild.

    Hurry the f*ck up Bethesda!!
  • symmetry #18 6 years ago

Additional developer content was always going to have a price tag sooner or later, I'm actually suprised that it took this long. And it's a brilliant tried and tested model - give it away for free at first, and then when people are hooked, start charging for it. We live in a capitalist society, not a communist one.
  • Wobble #19 6 years ago

    Bloody phones.
About once a month mine decides to not charge when i plug it in, but not bother telling me about it, so a day or two later it runs out of batteries in the middle of the night and does not wake me up in the morning.

    worst.phone.software.ever.

  • Moonprince #21 6 years ago

Look in the cs and you will find the answer to that...
  • numptyboymatt #22 6 years ago

I can (sort of) understand the whole paying for downloads thing.... much as I disagree with it, but what about paying for themes/wallpaper - surely we shouldt have to pay for those when they are basically free advertising?!
  • tengu #23 6 years ago

"> Coming soon to a console near you, play as you go games

Yeah, must have missed all those console MMORPGs myself.
  • Whizzo #24 6 years ago

Patching some basic scripting cockups would be nice but Bethesda does seem more interested in micro-payments than bug-fixing.

Oh well at least PC owners can usually hit the console when the fuckups appear and if we want more content there's shedloads of good, free content to download elsewhere.

And people questioned why I would buy the PC version of this over the 360 when I've got one, well there's the answer.

BETA patch? No thanks. I'll wait for the full one.. game can remain unplayed until then.
  • chavatar #28 6 years ago

I'm actually enjoying the bugs at the moment. Half my major skills don't level with use, meaning I can actually role play.

As for paid additional content, it was predictable and inevitable. Gamers are often idealists (and their disappointed offspring, cynics) and naturally object. It's a sign of the times, that this takes precedence over support.

Right or wrong, Oblivion is an amazing game and thank you. But I have a particular satisfaction enjoying Galactic Civ 2. Not ideal, but perhaps less cynical?

Oblivion gets boring after level 20 or so where you run out of new enemies to fight, and you run out of new armor or weapons (Daedric heavy armor and Glass Light Armor and weapons are all you can get other than enchanted versions of them at higher levels). Basically everything is tedious, go to dungeon, complete quest, rise and repeat.

I'd pay money if they would introduce new enemies and weapons to the game rather than same old bandits, lychs, or brown bears with higher levels and redundant identical dungeons.

You seriously think that there aren't any publishers that would love to see pay as you go games? You actually think that publishers aren't frothing at the mouth at the tought of charging fees for games, like all the money Blizzard are making? Especially now with more and more consoles going online and people screaming for digital distribution? It is your loss mate, just click that ignore button and continue living your fantasy. Who knows, maybe by the time you are being charged these fees you will be old enough to make an adults minimum wage ^_^
  • Fokofsnake #34 6 years ago

I'm really sick of the word "content"
  • moggsy #35 6 years ago

Publishers do like to make money yes but releasing additional content for a much loved game is hardly the downfall of games as we know it. If the original game was blatantly crippled in order to make way for additional content then yes this would be bad. But this criticism can hardly be levelled at Oblivion (quite the opposite) and so there really isn't a problem here.

Do the complainers feel the same about Half Life 2: Episode One? I very much doubt it...
  • dk_rare #36 6 years ago

Episode one is a campaign expansion, you can't bring campaign expansions into this.
  • cyber_nicco #37 6 years ago

I know I am late chiming in here, and I don't really have much to say that hasn't been said, but wtf?

I don't really understand the arguments against downloadable content. I mean, sure, patches that target coding defects should come at not cost, but additional content? What is the argument against it? That is should have been included in the first place? Says who? If that were the case, I guess all sequels should be free. I for one, love the idea of expanding a game I find particularly entertaining for a reasonable fee. If not, I would just have to wait for all content to come later, in a (probably) higher-priced sequel. New cars and tracks? New adventures or missions? New items (I don't have a 360 yet, so I don't really know much about the horse-armor thing)? It is all great. Sure, some will be priced poorly, or won't be much good, but that is true of all content - downloadable or otherwise...

    I just don't get it.
