New Virtua Tennis coming to Wii too News

Wii News by Ellie Gibson

16 February, 2009

SEGA has announced that the Virtua Tennis series is about to make its debut on the Wii.

Virtua Tennis 2009 was unveiled earlier this month for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Now SEGA has said Wii owners will be able to give it a go too with a version that has all the same features and arcade action.

That means a playing roster that includes Rafael Nadal, Venus Williams, Roger Federererer and the like, plus more than 40 court environments. The multiplayer Court Games are said to be a particular highlight; some old favourites will return along with five new games.

SEGA is also promising "an impressive online and offline depth for a Wii title". Specifically, the World Tour Mode "will allow Wii owners to experience Virtua Tennis online".

All versions of Virtua Tennis 2009 are due out this May.

Well on the positive side it could be very good given that the Wiimote is suited to simulating a tennis racquet but on the negative side this is likely to be another third-party game that suffers because the controller just isn't sensitive or accurate enough in the first place, resulting in inevitable frustration as shots are mistimed or missed all together through no fault of the player.

I guess I'll have to wait and see but for now I'll stick with the 360 version as it'll probably be the more relaxing game to play!

Been waiting for some kind of sequal to the original wii tennis game that came with the console. I always assumed it would be a mario type tennis game, but nintendo don't seem to be doing one.

Wii Sports Tennis has shown just how great this could be. The control system is brilliant and, once mastered, means you can put the ball pretty much anywhere on the court. Combine this with control over the character and you could have the best tennis game ever.

They are launching this virtual game for the tennis too. This will be a very happy news for the people who are interested in Tennis. Thanks for the news and please update more news on it. Can you tell me the date of releasing this game?

Love Wii Sports tennis as well, especially 4 player multi-player. :)

Not too sure though whether giving the player control over character movement would be such a good idea. Of course in real tennis positioning is very important but unless they can work out an intuitive control scheme for player movement using just the Wii-mote, I don't think it will work. But maybe Sega can surprise me.

Nope, it will be using the motionplus. So graphics aside, this could end up being the best version.

Sega seem to be taking the Wii seriously, hope it pays off for them.

Not really worried by the controls, if Wii Sports Tennis was as good as it was at launch then there should be no problem making Virtua Tennis' controls at least as good three years later.
