New Final Fantasy DS game revealed

Four Warriors of Light for autumn.

Square Enix is working on a brand new and original Final Fantasy game for DS that will be released in Japan this autumn.

Japanese magazine Weekly Jump got the jump on the announcement, according to a translation by IGN - spoiling a Square Enix teaser site countdown that now ticks on in vain.

Dubbed Four Warriors of Light: Final Fantasy Gaiden (translated from Hikari no Yon Senshi: Final Fantasy Gaiden), the game follows a 14-year old boy whose birthday is ruined when the King summons him to rescue his daughter from a witch.

His adventure plays out in typical party-of-four, plenty-of-menus fashion - although one where mana (or magic) points have been replaced by a Charge command.

Customisation will play a more important role, as equipment changes are reflected by the appearance of your character - a mechanic JRPGs usually forego.

FFXII and FF Tactics character designer Akihiro Yoshida will work on the game.

There's no word on release plans for Europe.

"spoiling a Square Enix teaser site countdown that now ticks on in vain"

Why do dev's bother with these lengthy countdowns? same thing happened to Konami with MGS

They need to be more innovative than that - I Love Bee's was some pretty smart advertising

As I feared, yet another DS game...
Would have loved to seen this on PS3, or 360.

This gen sucks pretty much if you're into RPG's but not into handheld gaming.

Very excited about this one, specially that Yoshida is onboard, hope it doesn't use the same style as FF3/4/CC kinda getting bored of that :) oh and @Raziel, fallout, oblivion, mass effect, blue dragon, lost odyssey, star ocean ...

Oh how I miss I Love Bees. It was brilliant.

chibi style and cel-shaded according to famitsu

Chibi style is fine as I loved Final Fantasy IX, cel shaded is ok too expecially since it's the DS anyway. What I don't like is the sound of the plot, sounds very much in the vein of Tactics Advance.

Oh well, hopefully 光の四戦士 will have hidden depths. Especially since the title is presumably a reference to the first Final Fantasy.

Based on the description, it doesn't really sound that ground breaking, but I guess we'll find out soon enough.

god forbid square made games with adult characters.
I mean... have you seen the opening cinematic for cristal chronicles ring of fates? it's ludicrous!
bring back adult characters. and for the love of the gaming god, bring back adult storylines.

From the sounds (and looks) of things it appears to be a homage to JRPGs of old. Works for me.

Don't people get sick and tired of this shit?
  • WinterSnowblind #11 3 years ago

The Microsoft viral sites were brilliant.. I love Bees and Our Colony were really great, they kept people guessing and gave rewards for doing so, it was a lot of fun. These basic countdowns are getting really old (especially when we're counting down for countdowns!). But yeah, the fact they keep getting leaked ahead of time makes them totally pointless. Announce the game or don't, I don't care about a clock.

I'm also a little tired of seeing such young main characters.. but assuming this game is actually co-op, I'll be interested. The Crystal Chronicles games are loot grinding awesomeness, a more traditional FF version of that could be pretty cool.

So thats only 10 people after a day of posts. Maybe im right? haha

There'll be more interest once there's a bit more to go on. This isn't the sort of announcement that generates 50+ responses anyway.
