More MW2 DLC in second half of 2010

Likely to stick with $15 price point.

Activision plans to release its second map pack for Modern Warfare 2 in the "back half of the year" according to CFO Thomas Tippl.

Referring to releases in the second half of calendar 2010, Tippl said during last night's earnings call: "With respect to the Call of Duty franchise, we plan to release the second Map Pack for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, which is currently in development at Infinity Ward."

Tippl later said that the first pack, the Stimulus Package, had been a roaring success and the $15 - 1200 Microsoft Points - price tag had been the right call for Activision.

"I think they've been selling incredibly well. As you know, we've expanded the number of maps that we are providing as part of that release," he said.

"And therefore, the $15 price point has still provided a fantastic value to gamers and is also evidenced by the billions of hours that people are playing the game online. So we think that has worked.

"We have currently the second Map Pack in development at Infinity Ward. So we expect this to be launch sometime later this year. And we haven't made any comment beyond that at this point," he added.

Xbox 360 platform holder Microsoft has previously said that the first two map packs for Modern Warfare 2 would be exclusive to its system for a timed period.

The Stimulus Package enjoyed 30 days of exclusivity, arriving on PC and PS3 this week.

Likely to stick with $15 price point for good, now they know millions will buy it.
It's what makes Bobby K. happy.

Milk Milk Milk the Activision Way
  • munki83 #4 2 years ago

So another 3 new maps and 2 from mw1
  • BM #5 2 years ago

I'll admit that I bought the first map pack, once bitten twice shy. The new maps aren't very good, and the old ones are spoilt by all the new perks.

Who is left at Infinity Ward to make this new DLC?
  • jumpdeveraux #7 2 years ago

I've resisted the urge to buy the first map pack even though it's the cost of a round of beers (in London at least) - map packs to me just fit into a 5-6 quid bracket at the most.

/waits for discount (which may be a long time coming - probably when 2nd map pack launches)
  • beastmaster #8 2 years ago

Can't launch that much later in the year. Certainly not too close to the next game.

"And therefore, the $15 price point has still provided a fantastic value to gamers"
Yeah, I'm sure crack addicts feel the same about their latest high.

Seriously, you can tell Activision were uncertain whether they could get away with the price. Still, a million people forked over £10 (About a quarter the price of the game) for 3 new maps and 2 oldies, so from purely a business perspective you can't blame them for trying to milk it a bit more.

"As you know, we've expanded the number of maps that we are providing as part of that release"

hows that work then?? are they adding extra content to the stimulus package? if not, this is an outright lie!!

another example of activision showing us all the proper way to win friends and influence people!!!!!

IP ownership or not, someone mustve slipped something into the coffee machine at bungie to get them to sign up with activision!!
  • Raziel #12 2 years ago

I'll assume it will be free this time, seeing as they made more than enough money on the first mappack?

I certainly won't buy a 2nd pack. I doubt I would have even bought the first pack if I knew what would happen to Infinity Ward in the weeks after it.
  • Tuffty #13 2 years ago

Actual proof that so called 'boycotters' don't work.
  • effinjamie #14 2 years ago

Well once again at that price point, I will not buy. Another push away from the franchise towards BBC2
  • carlitoswagon #15 2 years ago

More shite maps and a rehash of ones you can go and play for free on cod4. Well worth the price tag.
  • Spekingur #16 2 years ago

It's 15USD across all platforms. And I just spent 10USD on Civ4 Complete Edition. Much better value.
  • Stiggy #17 2 years ago

of more concern is that there doesn't appear to be any mention of anything other then maps - i.e. more Spec ops. But then I suppose that is the Acti way and they don't need/want to bring additional value to MW2 when they can try and flog Black Ops which will no doubt just be one long Spec Ops style game.

If they come out with a third map pack then that'll make it £30, more than some people paid for the main game (£25)!!
  • geeza2020 #19 2 years ago

oh my god im so glad i traded that piece of shit game in for battlefield bad company 2 before any of these rip-off map packs came out. BFBC2 is the Superior game in Every. Single. Way.
  • danmachine #20 2 years ago

i would rather pay $15 to a fat ass middle aged guy to shit on my chest than buy these shitty cod maps i wouldnt be suprised if they jusst let the game generate these maps and then they sell them on thats how generic and boring they are i remember when cod dlc was good like on cod 4
  • Dave52 #21 2 years ago

Oh stop your whining... I get so much pleasure out of online MW2, I'd happily pay around the £10 mark for a map pack. If you think that's too much, don't buy. Simples....
  • mukki #22 2 years ago

$15 price point has still provided a fantastic value to gamers-... my ass...
would like a lower price but WFT...
will buy this pack and probably and the next since I seem to be addicted to MW2 online...
  • LR100 #23 2 years ago

It was definitely not the right call to make at all! They knew suckers would buy it regardless of the stinging price. Business wise, they're laughing, but from a customer service POV, it was a terrrible call.
  • Soton4084 #24 2 years ago

    My advice:

Save your money by not buying any of this rip off DLC, trade in your copy of MW 2, then buy BFBC 2
  • monkeywithnoeyes #25 2 years ago

they should just give us more spec ops..attempt to earn that $15..rather than attempting to sel me COD4 again
  • Rubarack #26 2 years ago

@Mukki Individually that's a pretty rational viewpoint, but if people act this way collectively it means that nothing is ever good value for anyone, prices rise to exactly what people are prepared to pay. The point of capitalism was that competition would drive prices to their lowest level, but by creating these closed markets in DLC Publishers are subverting this system.
  • paketep #27 2 years ago

Given the number of people remaining at IW, this will probably be 3 maps converted from MW, 1 from CoD2 and 1 new shitty map.
  • homerramone #28 2 years ago

they are sticking with the price point eh... which is interesting... because on the subject of sticking they can stick it where the sun dont shine !!!

  • Spekingur #29 2 years ago

I'd buy it in an instant if it was 5 USD. I'm pretty sure others would agree. It's a lot better value to gamers. Activision would have to sell two or three times as much of it though to make the same amount they get for the 15 USD pricetag. Would probably generate more goodwill from gamers, which Activision really needs right now.

Although, being Hellspawn, Bobby K might know something about the world ending in 2012 (yeah, okay) and just wants to make as much money as he can before that.
  • Mosphaiti #30 2 years ago

ill get it, i like mw2
  • hulahoops #31 2 years ago

    Jeez.

    Tell us it sold well.

Tell us you're sticking to that price point because we were dumb enough to buy it.

Just don't tell us it's "fantastic value for gamers". We're not stupid enough not to realise we're buying it because we're stupid.
  • bodypopper #32 2 years ago

I predict Chinatown... now with care packages.
  • VibratingDonkey #33 2 years ago

Wonder if it'll be five maps for real this time or if they'll keep copy/pasting from CoD4.

What's funny about all this is how quickly the PC market just accepted everything. And by funny I mean sad. The game was $10 more and offered less in a way. Sold billions. $5 for maps most of them already owned. Sold billions. Wonder what'll sell billions next.
  • SilentNinja92 #34 2 years ago

    Who spends that on DLC?

Im guessing that it will be £15 for the UK then (not seen the price for the origional DLC) and that is just laughable.

Whp seriously paid for this its a complete and utter rip off. Its funny when you then look at battlefield bad company 2, where so far the game has gotten 2 free map packs XD

Maybe this is why those guys left for respawn "$15 for DLC, f*** off im leaving"
  • metalangel #35 2 years ago

@SilentNinja: by "free map packs" you mean "maps already on the disc but with the spawn points and capture points moved around a bit".
  • headrush #36 2 years ago

@ Milky1985: Its my decision what I spend my money for. So fuck you.
  • tiny_Eggy #37 2 years ago

    Why am I not surprised.

To those who bought the map-pack: thanks for doing a disservice to gamers around the world.
  • Dave52 #38 2 years ago

SilentNinja92: "Who spends that on DLC?"

    Me.

tiny_eggy "thanks for doing a disservice to gamers around the world"

Fuck off... a few hard-core gamers getting all high and mighty over 10 quid won't stop every other gamer in the world buying it. I love BFBC2 and would happily pay for DLC for that as well, as I did for MW1 and KZ2.
  • andywilkie35 #39 2 years ago

Anyone who spends 1200 MS points on a multiplayer map pack that contains 3 maps is mentally retarded.

I imagine this means EG will review a map pack again later in the year! Review a map pack. REVIEW A MAP PACK! That is literally mental.
  • Sir_TimAlot #40 2 years ago

Always amazes me how many penniless moaning gypsies feel the need to tell other people how to spend thier money, fuck off.
  • makariel #41 2 years ago

I guess since Blizzard can charge 25$ for a magic horse, Bobby can charge 15$ for 3 and a half maps.
  • Spekingur #42 2 years ago

    @makariel
    Exactly!
And now, imagine what they'll do with Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3. No really, imagine really hard. The worst they can do. Or rather, the best they can do - and then charge money for it. Upwards to the full game price. Just like they do with expansions in WoW - there is a reason why you have to pay for them in WoW while other games can put up expansions at no or little extra cost to the customer. And that's 'flaying the willing customer for as much money as you think you can get out if him'.
  • metalangel #43 2 years ago

What has happened to the world? The stuff that used to be free now costs as much as those old "mission disks" of old, while the stuff that world constitute one of the aforementioned expansion packs now costs as much as a full game! But no, imbeciles, keep buying it, so long as it makes you happy NOW who cares how fucked over you'll be LATER, right?
  • evilrobot #44 2 years ago

This is why i did not purchase the pack. Do people really have such short insight to think the 1200msp price tag was a one off?
  • ozzzy189 #45 2 years ago

I gave in and bought the first pack after swearing i would not, mainly because most of my mates bought it. Well this time i will definately not buy it. I hate the way we were treated and basicallyi though it was a rip off. No buy for me, and i'm pretty sure a lot will say the same second time around. Sorry guys, i was one of the ones who spoilt it i'm afraid.
  • outy #46 2 years ago

@Makariel Err.. Bobby was behind Wow's celestial steed!
  • Viz1 #47 2 years ago

I won't buy greedy companies will fleece people dry until people stop buying....but it's indervidual choice at the end of the day...
  • Dylbot #48 2 years ago

"Hi, we're Activision. Charging the same amount as higher-tier XBLA games for some new scenery sure as hell worked out for us last time, so we're doing it again! Hope you enjoy getting fucked over!"

Jesus, they really need to get a new PR team.
