Mega Man 9 to cost 1000 Wii Points News

Wii News by Tom Bramwell

9 July, 2008

Mega Man 9 will be sold for 1000 Wii Points in Japan, according to Famitsu (via Kotaku), which is about GBP 7 or EUR 10 in the real world.

Capcom wasn't immediately available to clarify European pricing for the game, which is due out in Japan in September.

Mega Man 9 is a 2D platform game not just in the same guise as the old-days NES versions, but designed to look a bit like one too.

As you can see from the screenshots, it's about as old-school as possible, and will adhere to the series' traditions of eight bosses to fight at the end of long platform levels.

Control will be by holding the Wii remote sideways like a NES pad. We're hoping to get a go on it at E3 next week - Capcom confirmed last night that it would be there along with many of its friends.

I was fine until I saw the NES-style of it. That smacks of laziness to my mind considering the effort going into a lot of WiiWare titles. I'd kinda get the idea if it was being played off something, done tongue-in-cheek. Something that makes you feel, "Yes. A lot of effort went into this." But a few screenshots and I just don't see it.

I love my retro but even I'll admit I find the retro titles on offer expensive already - and now we get a new-retro-style game for how many points?!

Whatever floats your boat. But between this and SBCG4AP - a TTG point and click adventure - my money is with TTG. Not just because they did a great thing with Sam and Max, but because it feels like a great idea.

Plus, again, looking at it... 1000 points? Mega Man diehards will label me a snob but that does seem like an awful lot to my mind. Save money? Why do I feel that 1000 points is too much then...

You may commence name calling.

I'm alright with the price tag, but only on the assumption that this is going to be a classic Megaman game but 'bigger.' I.e I want it to be longer, more inventive and more intense than any previous classic Megaman for that price. The NES couldn't handle too many sprites on screen (Horrendous flicker on Top Man's stage in Megaman 3 for example,) but the Wii can (yeah insert funny Wii-not-powerful joke here.) So basically I want to see detailed and varied NES style sprites and millions of things flying around on screen at once.

If this game ticks those boxes, it's absolutely worth 1000 Wii points for me and absolutely my most anticipated game of the year at this pre-E3 point of the year. I don't think I'm alone!

I'm quite happy with the price as it's a newly developed title rather than an emulated ROM.

I thought I read in the Games Radar preview that the main menu had lots of other play options that they just weren't able to discuss at the moment? Hopefully we'll find out more at E3.

Damn the graphics have the exact same look as the NES versions (uexpected). For nostalgia purposes thats great. You really feel you are back in the good old days when playing this. This must come to XBLA too please Capcom. I gladly pay 1200++ MS points for this.

lavalant - you are totally right!!!

The developers definitely shouldn't be rewarded for creating a brand new game!!! We should just steal it!!!

"£7 for a NES game?. the price is fucking bull, god please send me a pirated ROM of this game cos I aint paying £7,"

It's not a NES game, it's a Wiiware title that has the aesthetics of a NES title. On the basis that the people that make these games need to be paid then seven lousy quid (what's that 2-3 pints in a pub) for a new game is a good price. Your Crackdown comparison is flawed as Crackdown cost a hell of a lot more then seven quid when it was new.
So you go back to pirating games and take the food from the mouths of people that actually provide you with content for your hobby.

Your ROM argument is just plain wrong. This is a brand new game - doesn't matter what platform it's created for - so of course you should pay the creators.

If you don't think it's worth it, then don't fucking buy it. Don't pretend that stealing it is somehow righteous.

Lavant, please do get a job. They risk a lot with releasing this targeted to old-school Mega Man fans instead of "today's" gamers. But just because it is old doesn't mean it's any less effort to create the game. Getting the old Mega Man feel right is probably harder than creating a new game based on Mega Man.

I'm not sure why you're talking about ROMs as I'd be surprised if this new Megaman has been written in 6502 assembly. It's a wii-ware title, and would have been written as such. IMHO, it doesn't matter if it looks like a NES game or not, a team of people still had to make it, so I don't think the price is that unreasonable, we also don't know what other features the game contains yet.

'Same guise' and 'looks like' mean exactly the same thing. You've just said "not only does it look like a NES game, it also looks like one".

Anyway this seems like a fun idea. I thought it was pretty awesome when it was announced. The question is will it actually do anything with the potential of the Wii, rather than just straight-up making a NES game the same as the others? Because that would actually be suck-cheese.

Whilst I obviously don't condone piracy in any way, shape or form, Nintendo can GET FUCKED if they think i'm paying 7 quid for this.

Robbing.

Mother.

Fuckers.

For exactly the same reason i've bought precisely ZERO C64 games.

@lavalant:

1. They arent re-releasing an old game.. It's a new game
2. Whereas i agree it's too much to pay for said new game and isnt my cup of tea.. If i dont want something - i dont buy it. If you dont want it.. dont buy it, dont pirate it. If you say you dont want it, but then go and pirate it anyways - then you obviously did want it.

"there are thousands of homebrew games out there that are given away for free"

That's the most fucked up stupid argument i've ever heard.

There are THOUSANDS of shit homemade films on youtube that are given away for free. That means that it's okay to pirate movies as the movie companies are obviously being greedy.

PS: Dont call me a twat you theiving scum.

Who the hell said that just because it looks like a NES game it also plays like a NES game? It's a new game that looks like an old one, so who cares? Gears of War 2 lookes exactly like Gears of War 1 did. So? It's still a new game, new levels, new enemies, new music etc.

Of course saying that you think 1000 points is too much is a valid argument; However, telling everyone you would just steal it because you insist it's a NES game is NOT a valid argument. You have no idea how it plays and what different play modes will be available; Maybe there's a boss rush mode or even a battle mode like in the Mega Man arcade games, who knows. But before you don't know that it's really immature to act like you do.
