Mario Galaxy 2 to get Super Guide? News

Wii News by Oli Welsh

17 November, 2009

Asked by Official Nintendo magazine if Super Mario Galaxy 2 will use the Super Guide feature that makes its debut in this week's New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Shigeru Miyamoto said he "cannot tell".

But he indicated that the game would probably be difficult enough to warrant it. "Well, as far as the challenge of Super Mario Galaxy 2 is concerned, I think it's going to be a really challenging game, but whether or not we are going to incorporate the Super Guide, I just cannot tell," said the famous designer.

"In general, wherever and whenever appropriate, I think we will want to incorporate that kind of thing, but I cannot commit to anything specific right now."

In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the Super Guide appears as an option if a player is struggling on a particular level. When selected, it starts an automatic playthrough showing the player how to complete it. Players can jump in and take control at any point, or simply allow the Super Guide to finish the level for them.

What a great idea. I am still stuck on the Boo Race from the first game. If only I had super guide I could finish the race and carry on with the game.

beckyh - or you could just skip that level and move on to another one? You don't need to collect every Star in order to finish the game, you know.

And this is why I think Super Guide won't work as well in a non-linear game like Mario Galaxy. In something like NSMB, fair enough as the difficulty can stop you progressing to another world (which can be frustrating when you take the multiplayer aspect into account), but in SMG, where there's always another challenge to move on to... it's really not necessary.

I'd imagine at the very least it would be a much more complicated feature to add to a game like SMG.

Make it hard Nintendo! Make it really fucking hard!

I mean, Ninja Gaiden-style hard, Mile High Club Achievement-style hard!

Imagine a Mario game that was balls-to-the-wall impossible!!! Hehehehe

This is GREAT! I also heard that school textbooks are going to start passing your exams for you, and Warner Bros and Universal have just developed a film that sits and watches itself so that you can go out for a pint.

Fuck you Nintendo, and your mountain of casual-funded cash.

If anything, the super guide stuff has allowed them to make the game harder. SMB Wii is certainly much tougher than the DS game, which was way too easy. The master play videos they include really show off some fantastic things you can do in the levels, and I'd imagine that knowing they had to make those videos probably fed back into the level design and make the game itself better.

Crofto, if you complete NSMB Wii without using the Super Guide a special something happens. *doesn't know what that is*

Have you tried doing the "space mario" races with luigi?!?
Or the 100 red coins on luigi in toy world - with luigi?

It's ROCK hard!
