Halo 3 beta goes live today

Keep up with all our coverage.

After months of small-talk, Microsoft will finally open the Halo 3 multiplayer beta to the public today.

The proposed switch-on was scheduled for 13:00 GMT, and will last until 07:59 on 7th June. Word has it that those downloading via Crackdown aren't having any luck as yet, though, so Microsoft appears to be having a few teething troubles.

The 951MB download will give you the chance to try out three maps from the game and shoot your mates in the chops, relaying valuable information to developer Bungie about your experience. That is if you've secured a key, of course. And have a Gold Live account. And an Internet connection. And a hard disk. And space on your hard disk. A working Xbox 360 generally helps, too.

The keys were given out in special promotions that have long since expired, leaving Crackdown as the only current option for getting in on the fun.

If you've managed to bag yourself copy containing a key then you can redeem it in the in-game menu. We've also teamed up with Microsoft to giveaway 10 copies of Crackdown complete with Halo 3 beta key as a last-chance to join in. Good luck.

On top of all that we spent the weekend giving the beta a thoroughly good seeing to, and gave you not only our impressions of the action, but our own captured screenshots and a map guide to help you out.

There's also bundles of news and trailers in the Halo 3 gamepage for you to get stuck into.

All you have to do now is go and enjoy yourself. When it goes live, of course.

Halo 3 will be released for Xbox 360 on 26th September in Europe, and the day before in the U.S.

    how come everyone 360's are broken and yet MS dont give a damn hey (I have two that are burried in my back garden now - not literally, but you get the idea..)

    Why am I still at work and not at home using xbox MK 3 to play it...I cant see sleep being too high on the agenda this evening.

    So, whats going on with the Crackdown d/l then? It's still not there.

    This had better not be some cunning marketing trick by MS - where owners of Crackdown will have access to the beta, but only 2 days before it's removed - or something similar.

    I just drove home and tried to download the thing and it didn't work.

    I had to use my PS3 web browser to find out what the problem was. You'd have thought MS could have left a message on my Xbox letting me know there's a problem.

    I hope this Crackdown problem isn't a big one.

    Can't blame EG really, to be fair - they would have simply reported what Bungie told them. And the Beta is available for everyone else to use - just not via Crackdown. Minor glitch considering the scale of what they're trying to achieve - besides, you get to play H3 for free, months before its actually released........don't really think you've got much to moan about. :)

    I would have tested it via Crackdown if I hadn't given it to a friend to try out. Is downloading fine via a separate key. Story tweaked to highlight the current issue.

    Exactly. You paid for Crackdown and got free access to the Halo 3 Beta. Crackdown wouldn't have cost less without the key, which means you didn't pay for the Halo 3 Beta at all.

    Unless you spent nigh on £50 for Crackdown purely for the Beta access with no intention of actually playing the full game you actually paid for. In which case, you are the actual definition of a Fucking Idiot.

    Whoah now why is everyone getting upset about whether its justified to get upset?

    Given that we:

    a) Pay for xbox live.
    b) Paid for crackdown (which was advertised as having the key for the beta).
    c) Were told the beta was going to be available on this day at the specified time.

    I don't think its so unreasonable to be disappointed no? I'm at work right now but personally I don't think its unreasonable to blame MS. Especially since this is something they should have, you know, tested first?

    I think lambtron has hit the proverbial nail - the key word here is 'disappointed'. We're all disappointed it's not available yet, it's just that a few of us are able to deal with situation calmly and rationally (read: like adults) and not stamp our feet and spit our dummies because there's been a cock up. It's not as if MS has just stolen your wallet and shafted you whilst you weren't looking - it's just going to be a bit later than anticipated. Such is the way of life - learn to accept that these things happen.

    On the whole broken 360 thing. I have a launch 360 console, as do 3 of my friends and they are all dead! All out of warranty. I have not fixed mine yet (partly as I have moved to Sydney for some months) but so far none of us have had them fixed and we all own well over 15 games. So please, Microsoft, consider fixing for free hardware that you are obviously struggling to build reliably.

    I still regularly play X360 and look forward to more exciting releases this year, but no matter how they will spin it. It is a complete FUBAR and an embarrasing fiasco! Think of the poor Yanks, especially on west coast who been up for 5 am to download it!

    Me, I thought it was rash but pleased that I got PS3 (as of yesteday) so will play motorstorm until whenever the blasted thing get released, then look forward to the slow 1 GB download

    It may seem pathetic to some that people are getting angry about the Beta delay but really, it's infuriating to know that Microsoft had promised a limited beta was to be released at a specific time pretty much as a reward to those who paid for Crackdown yet they are too incompetant to make it happen. If I could just avoid Crackdown and download it from XBLM for free then I wouldn't be pissed, but this is ridiculous.

    GamerAddict: Your vitriolic post actually reminds me more of a fanboy than almost anything else that's been posted in here. For what it's worth, this beta's meant to be extremely polished; it's just only got a few maps. Specifically, the maps which are polished and pretty much ready for public consumption. I imagine a few bits will still be rather rough, though.

    The way I look at it is, if you're expecting it, then you know to take some deep breaths and relax before the big push (so to speak). However, if you're not expecting it, you're more likely to flinch and contract, causing major tearage of the sphincter...........and before you ask, no I'm not speaking from experience!!! Honest.

    So, it would appear that Bungie internally stress-tested to death everything, except the reliability of the key delivery method...LMFAO!

    I was going to download the NBA Street Homecourt demo instead, because I like basketball (and really enjoyed Vol.2)...The download chugged to a halt. To anyone that's got/played it: How's Homecourt play? Does it have long-term appeal?

    Well, there was an update recently. Anything could have happened to screw it over. Methinks, whatever the reason, that it wasn't planned out as well as everyone thought.

    Still, it's not the only game ever made, so it's no big loss in the long run. I can wait an extra day without too much bother.

    My mate said he would text me when the beta get ungreyed in Crackdown, however he just texted me few mins ago asking for tel no for Repair Centre as got ring of death whilst waiting!

    Now he is furious as not able to play halo 3 beta, as his x360 will unlikely be replaced before end of beta. So hoping that Bungie/Microsoft will extend the date in light of the delays and frustrations!

    I'm slightly gutted it's not up tonight,I even arranged for my GF not to come over as I was going to have a whole night of Halo loving. Now even when it does go up I'm not really going to have much of a chance to play it anyway, DAMN YOUUUUUU MICROSOFT AND BUNGIE!!!!!!!! And I'm done.
    Reading the reactions on the Bungie forums and even on the Xbox ones are fairly amusing mind, especially the ones who want to sue them for false advertising, that would be a great scenario in court :)

    The chance of X360 getting ring of death is actually quite reasonable, it happened to me once and now to my mate, both of us owned console for over a year. Bad timing rather than any conspiracy! Who is the bonker here?!

    Interested to know what the reasons for the cock up, sure it is not end of world but it questions the reliability and ability to deliver?

    So one quite negative take on Beta (Tyronne), fair enough, what did not you like? Not different enough to Halo 2 multi-player? At least was it fun enough to play?

    Me still downloading it at moment (53%) but would not play it until after work this afternoon.

    My download of the beta is friggin bombing along, I thought that Live somehow throttled download speeds to around 250KB/s, I guess that theory is wrong as I was passed 10% within 2 minutes :/ So much for it slowing down to a crawl huh?

    I downloaded it with glee this morning. Started it and got a BETA IS UNAVAILABLE OR HAS EXPIRED. It seems this is a common problem. So now you can download it (very quickly for me) but not play it. The words SHAMBLES and BAG A SHITE come to mind. There are suggested fixes of cache clearing and fisting a chicken but I just want Bungie to release another frigging patch. Appreciate the beta but get it working or I'lll stamp on a cat.

    One of the biggest problems for me is that the game does not feel to be a step forward but more a step sideways....and a very underwhelming gaming experience for me.
