Firefight could feature in Halo: Reach News

Xbox 360 News by Tom Bramwell

7 September, 2009

Bungie has said that the future of the co-operative Halo 3: ODST mode Firefight is not set, and that it has every chance of reappearing in future Halo games.

"The number one question these days is whether we're going to do DLC for ODST and add more Firefight maps. Right now we honestly have no plans to do that because we have another huge game in the works," community lead Brian Jarrard told Eurogamer during the Penny Arcade Expo.

"I can't talk too much about Reach specifics, but hopefully the game mode's going to be received as well we think it will be, and people are going to enjoy it. I don't think we've ever been known to really take things away from each successive release, so I think it's safe to say that if Firefight gets a lot of traction and people love it, it probably has a good future home in our next title as well."

It certainly made an impression on us, as you can read in today's Halo 3: ODST Firefight hands-on preview.

We also asked Jarrard, given the Orbital Drop Shock Trooper's unique characteristics relative to the Master Chief (his shorter jump, different weapon skills and lack of a recharging overshield), whether the developer had considered dropping ODSTs into regular Halo multiplayer and seeing how that played out.

"I think a decision was made pretty much at the beginning that we were not going to touch the competitive multiplayer aspect for this game," he said. "I'm not aware of any real time spent on injecting ODST into the competitive multiplayer experience."

Halo 3: ODST is due out for Xbox 360 on 22nd September. Look out for a review around then.

Why not? Firefight sounds like a good mode so it could easily be implemented in Reach. But the question is what the hell is Reach? My guess is that it could be a squad-based shooter with RPG elements. They said it'll be an FPS, we know that much.
But since ODST is different from the Halo Trilogy and we have Halo Wars, surely Reach will be another different experience?
Going by the back-story, I reckon you'll be playing as John 117 from his early days in the SPARTAN II programme to the events of the Reach escape. Over the course of the game, as the SPARTANS gain their augmentations, finally culminating in MJOLNIR armour, you'll level up and get more powerful.
Also, since there were more SPARTANS at the time, and they used to be in squads, it could have some squad mechanics. John was leader of Blue Team as far as I remember.

OK, so Reach will have a more improved version of what is one of the most entertaining and successful online multiplayer gaming experiences. Plus it will now have what is likely to be the best "horde"-type game mode available at the moment - and again, likely to have significant improvements over that in ODST.

Surely this should infringe on some kind of monopoly laws, because that will surely be the single best multiplayer game ever created?

@ altitude2k: that's an understatement, it will be the greatest game ever created. Problem is, it must be bad for our health, nothing with this level of awesomeness is innocuous.

I reckon Reach will be like MAG but in the Halo universe possibly with a bit of space battling tagged on a la Star Wars Battlefront.

Competive multi player should stay clear of ODST i think. Leave that to the normal master chief clones and leagues. As for firefight well i imagine that if its played alot then next game reach will have it and then the map DLC will go to reach it really makes no sense to do the DLC for ODST taking time and resources away from reach which will ship a year later.

Remember bungie are not known for making a map pack and abbadoning a game for example, Halo 2 was on top live lists till gears of war shifted it and even then it was around till halo 3 showed.
