FFXIV looks likely for Xbox 360

Xbox Live causing the hold-up.

Final Fantasy XIV Online producer Hiromichi Tanaka has revealed that Square Enix is "in discussions" with Microsoft about an Xbox 360 version of the MMO. The hold-up, apparently, is being caused by Xbox Live.

"For FFXIV, because 360 has its own policy with Xbox Live that is different from [the] internet, that's something we're in discussions with Microsoft [about] - to come to an agreement," Tanaka told VG247 at gamescom.

"That's one of the reasons it's not going to be launched at that point," he added, referencing the simultaneous PC and PS3 release next year.

Final Fantasy XIV Online was unveiled at E3 as part of the Sony keynote address. The first gameplay footage was filmed at gamescom this week, and our impressions of the MMO from there will be with you later today.

Stay tuned.

I'd consider getting it if it came out on 360.
  • Xerx3s #2 3 years ago

Didn't they already do a FF MMO on the 360? What's different now?
  • Burkey123 #3 3 years ago

I thought Sony announced it as a PS3 exclusive at E3?? Maybe I'm wrong. Well, obviously I'm wrong.

    I hate Japanese games!
  • breedob #5 3 years ago

@Burkey123 - They definitely did announce it as PS3 exclusive but we soon found out it was coming to PC. This was one of Sony's big announcements at E3 aswell.

Thats got to be good news, the more platforms the more people get the chance to play... which has to be a good thing for a mmo!!. Really looking forward to this.

Does this mean that game opinion goes from "shit" to "hot exclusive stealing"?

I do love some Japanese games. I loved Last Remant (though I think it was the last "hardcore jRPG", the fat lady's song, gaming is too mainstream for that kinda stuff), though I can't seem to enjoy tri-Ace cooking bullshit.
FFXIII and FFXIV looks a tiny little bit like LR, from what I saw (lighter though), so, I'm in (if it comes to 360).

loved FF11 on the 360,couldn't get into it on PC

you only needed a Silver account to go online and play Final Fantasy 11,because you paid 7 quid a month to Square..not sure why they don't just do the same,it was cross platform game as well,360 players played along side PC and PS2 players

i hope they can work something out anyway

and apart from FF11 on the 360,they also have Phantasy Star Online MMO as well...i am quite surprised with the 'xbox live is holding things up' comment
  • Widge #12 3 years ago

If this has cross platform characters and play, and is also either free or cheap to play ... and good I suppose, I'm up for it.

As farticus says, no other real competition.
  • berelain #13 3 years ago

I never really liked FF11; it was painfully hard going at times and had so little to do apart from beat up random critters that it felt like a throwback to the original Everquest. And I still take issue with the numbering. Its not a 'core' Final Fantasy game; it should have just been FFOnline. If Crystal Chronicles didn't deserve a number, then neither should FF11 ;D

But anyway, unless FFIV is planning to really step up and modernise the gameplay a little, I doubt I'll be interested.

And tsk tsk at Xbox Live holding things up.
  • redael #14 3 years ago

Its likely to do with deciding to dump PlayOnline for FFXIV and having to figure out how to get the recently introduced Square Enix master accounts and Live working together.

Makes me wonder if the security tokens will carry over...

    @Burkey123

Sony also announced FFXIII exclusive but oh well.. lol But to be honest with you f I remmber correctly they said its exclusive and a few mins late when thy asked Square Enix away from the Sony stuff they already said they were considering a 360 version so it never really was exclusive more than the momment they said it to their fans. I think they all got home and read the news afterwards.

Personal opinion: Might be a FF title but if it's not good doesn't men I'll go buy it specially when we are talking about MMO's which ive had clans in mstly all of them im TIRED of starting another if I dontknow for sure its so good that I will be playing happily at LEAST the next year or 2. That's all im asking :)

Edit: I wont even bother editting my typoz cause it will take forever. Im sick in bed with the wireless keyboard and takes EFFORT to type in right temo and angle from all the way over here. Thats why i love it connected with my HDTV though. I can use net from back here without getting a laptop to be boiling my nuts on my lap ^^

"it is by far the most sucessful console in the US(excluding wii obviously)"

That's a rather ridiculous and pointless remark to make. It's distant number 2 of the current 3 competitors. And including previous gen(s) doesn't make it look much better.

But given the relative size of the 360's installed base vs. PS3 in the West, it does of course make sense to release it on both platforms. Given SE's recent track record, it will probably be crap though...
  • des #17 3 years ago

Oh what a surprise...judging by the videos its nowhere near the completion and it will probably be delayed and released simultaneously on all platforms

E3 was fun in that regard,
    Sony hive...FFXIV exclusive...omg woohoo
    Moment later...online only...meh
    Jack Trenton lol

It's not all that surprising that Live is holding things up. I play Phantasy Star Universe, and it seems that client updates for that are sometimes delayed while they have to clear Microsoft's certification process. It also seems that it takes longer for the Xbox side to come back up after some maintenance as that has to be checked via Live too.

Live also seems to be the restricting factor in cross platform play too, as the Xbox side is separated from the PC and PS2 one. They incorporated voice chat via Live and links to Gamertags into that, which seems to have complicated any cross platform play. From what I could tell FF11 got round this by not integrating with Live and using this Play Online viewer thing. I'm somewhat interested to see how they work it for FF14, but I'm unlikely to play it regardless.
  • ZeroAX #19 3 years ago

if they actually allowed cross platform play, i'd be happy, but thanks to ms live, I don't see that happening. Unless FF14 is exclusive to windows 7 on the pc.... and they don't get to play with those filthy ps3 owners.

also I think sony is feeling quite stabbed in the back from Squareenix, once more
  • Shakey_Jake33 #20 3 years ago

@Xerx3s - SquareEnix probably want it cross-platform, like FFXI is. Microsoft allowed SquareEnix to do it with FFXI to get them on board and developing on the 360, but they might not be so lenient this time. SquareEnix probably aren't too keen on having servers just for the 360, it's double the amount of maintainance.
  • Widge #21 3 years ago

+1 for the "the 360 is the most successful console in the US apart from the one that is actually the most successful" comment
  • Widge #22 3 years ago

Liverpool were champions of the Premier League last season (apart from Manchester United)
  • Les #23 3 years ago

"also I think sony is feeling quite stabbed in the back from Squareenix, once more"

Why? It's not like they met with SE and they told them that they would make it exclusive for PS3 and then changed their minds. Sony knew all along that this was in the cards.
  • NewbieZilla #24 3 years ago

    PS3lol.
    MMOFail.

    That is all.
  • EmiliasHorse #25 3 years ago

Sage words indeed..... have some minus points.

"Liverpool were champions of the Premier League last season (apart from Manchester United)"

    LOL :)

Helps maybe that I'm a United fan (from before they started to actually win prizes)

    "I'm LIVERPOOL :("

I've got nothing against Liverpool though I'm less enamored by Chelsea ;)
  • frankfurter209 #29 3 years ago

So they're making 13, versus 13, and 14 simultaneously? Do people still care about Final Fantasy anymore? If there was a franchise past its sell-by-date, it's this one.
  • firefly #30 3 years ago

    @Frankfurter

Fair point, I still care about Final Fantasy but a lot of that is nostalgia for the PS1 days. Ever since Square and Enix merged the brand seems to have been milked quite a lot, yet failed to deliver anything at all that captures the magic of the old school games.
It's a strong brand (especially since it can be re-intented with each game) but I really wish they'd come up with something that still has what I loved about FF VI, VII and IX.

Edit: Oh and be fresh and innovative at the same time, yes I'm a contradiction.

To be blunt, Sony are morons. Yes it is right "Sony" stated that it was going to be exclusive, but, they spoke out of turn. SquareEnix never made an agreement for the game to be exclusive. It will be released for PC definately, they are also have a 360 release scheduled (not sure of exact date, but it will be mid to late 2010) and to be blunt, if this was PS3 exclusive, I would drop the entire Final Fantasy series right there because I'm not dealing with the portable grill they call a PS3. The PS3 is a completely worthless console and they should let it die already, they're struggling to keep it alive for a reason.
  • RyuuMesena #32 2 years ago

FFXIV has loads of awesome features, battle system stays the same as FFXI... escentially... which is good in my opinion, they brought back a lot of the old classes from previous FF games, such as the Lancer, gladiator and sorts. They kept the same races... escentially... giving them different names. There are differences in gameplay, the graphics are enhances 10 fold compared to FFXI. This is an extremely sexy game, I'd advise anyone that likes MMOs to get it. Though, I'm sure, such as FFXI, there will be a pay to play fee, though probably not much, they will probably keep it the same as FFXI honestly, maybe slightly higher. ($13 initally +$1 for each additional character slot a.k.a. Content ID)

To bad it's not looking that way as of today, 360 didn't want to go with se rules and now they dont get the game for xbox and they won't get ff13 vs either. i am glad this happens becuz xbox sucks man i mean look at what they have. if they came out with some new games that were not the same and added some thing new yeah i would pro like the xbox but untill then, xbox sucks, i hope that everyone dont get red ring of death or red dot of death cuz that has been happening alot my friend bought the new slim and bam it hit him after 3 hours of playing a game, i wouldn't want to spend all of that money..
