FFXIII Versus "on hold", says Nomura

Spin-off not currently top priority.

Work on the action-themed spin-off for Final Fantasy XIII has temporarily ceased.

According to Famitsu (as reported by Forever Fantasy), game director Tetsuya Nomura said Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been put "on hold".

This is because "the entire Versus team is helping to finish Final Fantasy XIII", which is said to be the "number one priority". Still no release date in sight.

As Nomura told us last year, Versus is set in the present day and is said to be darker than traditional FF games. It'll also have more in common with third-person shooters than menu-driven RPGs. For more info, read the full interview.

Update, 1.44pm: Square Enix has responded and denied that Versus XIII is on hold after all.

YES, 13 rather than 13 versus please!

Well that sucks - Much as I want to play FFXIII, I was really looking forward to versus as it's by the KH team. Still, on hold is better than cancelled...

After the dogshit that was FFXII, I really don't care about FF games any more.

I thought the same after I played FFVIII, yet we got perhaps the best FF ever afterwards - FFIX.

Good. The main game -should- be top priority. I don't even think these companion titles should exist at all.
  • OnlyMe #8 4 years ago

FFX is good too. The point was that there's been 12 (main) games in the series so far, and just because not all of them suits your tastes, isn't reason enough to write off the entire series.

Yes it is. i'm writing it off! I want vagrant story 2, not FF13.

They only released version III yesterday! 10 million downloads though, nice.

Unfortunately I think that was FFXII.

I would like a direct sequel to Vagrant Story but FFXII is likely as close as we're ever gonna get to it...

I really can't wait for FFXIII, so anything that gets that game out sooner is good in my books! :D

"After the dogshit that was FFXII, I really don't care about FF games any more."

I agree, unless they get rid of that awful battle system I can't see myself continuing to be a fan of the franchise. Tbh though, as I get older, I'm starting to loose interest in the FF universe anyway, it was great when I was 15/16ish, but there's only so much emo teenage angst I can bear these days...
  • Widge #16 4 years ago

FFVIII was certainly emo-esque, but I'd hardly say any of the other recent ones were. Since then all the leads have been happy chipper people with no New Chemical Romance in sight

:) I said this ages ago, that they seemed to be doing far too many FFXIII titles and it was getting confusing as to which was the actual RPG. Guess their own marketting guys have told them the same thing. Took them long enough to figure it out though.

What is wrong with you people? The FFXII battle system is a MILLION times better than the same, old, boring "select attack", "select attack", "select attack" system of the other games.

Also, FFVIII was the dogs bollocks (better than VII IMO).

Apart from the constant DRAW DRAW DRAW and the fact that there was nothing to differentiate the characters beyond limits and appearance really (same for FFVII too, I preferred the role types of FFIX, FFX), I thought VIII was great too. Lovely story to it, great high points to the plot such as the SeeD exam, the assassination attempt and the missile attack on Balamb.

I was alright with XII's combat system too, I kinda liked setting up my attack approach like some sort of master tactician (ahem), and letting them get on with it. Rather that than the constant stop start of Vagrant Story's approach. Story wasn't much to speak of though and again, nothing to differentiate you characters really.
