F1 2010 due out in September

Massive Career mode, multiplayer.

Codemasters has announced plans to release F1 2010 for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 this September.

The British publisher has also released the first two screenshots of F1 2010 in action.

F1 2010 promises to include all the official teams, drivers and circuits, including the returning Michael Schumacher and the new Korean International Circuit.

Game modes include an "extensive, innovative" Career mode, plus Grand Prix, Championship and Time Trial.

Naturally there will be competitive multiplayer as well.

As you might imagine, developer Codemasters Studios Birmingham is using Codies' fabulous EGO engine (DiRT 2, GRID).

'F1 2010 due out in September' Screenshot 1

Hamilton academic?

We're promised a "highly advanced" damage model, dynamic weather and changes to "accurately recreate the unique aerodynamics and handling of 200MPH+ Formula One cars".

Codies also boasts of "unprecedented access" to teams and drivers, but then everyone says that. I had unprecedented access to a sandwich earlier.

We're all fairly pumped about this one though, especially after Codies did such a reasonable job of F1 2009 on Wii. Expect proper impressions of F1 2010 very soon.

Yum, but that's hardly an explosion of screens, is their PR person ill?
  • DirtyDubs #2 2 years ago

Could be great if it can stop people driving backwards and have huge penalties for crashing into other drivers.

Have proper rules like blue flags for overtaking and maybe different goals (even online) depending on what car you drive. No point in having a grid full of Ferrari's, Merc's or whoever is on top in September.

+1 to new Geoff Crammond game. Fingers crossed this is good.

    Please don't be crap. Please.

yawn another dull racer, would love to hear news of a proper arcade racer like wangan maximum tune/initial D or somesuch. Fed up of this bias towards serious racers that insists i break to take corners - no i do that in real life not interested in doing that in a game.
  • myiagros #7 2 years ago

Damage modelling doesn't really make sense in F1 like it does for rally and touring cars.

With the exception of the front wing, if you take any damage it's race over.

The pictures look pretty stunning though.

Also, how are they going to be able to match the constantly changing relative performance of the cars?
Last year the relative speeds of each car where all over the place, at various point throughout the season, depending on who brought what new parts to what race.
It would be disapointing to be stuck with the relative car positions based on where the teams are in september, rather than have them evolve over the entire season.
  • altitude2k #8 2 years ago

What ever happened to Geoff Crammond? GP4 was a bit of a letdown, but GP2 and 3 were absolute quality.
  • Sniper_007 #9 2 years ago

@Senate - if you want an arcade racer there's plenty to choose from this year - Blur, Split Second or even the old Burnout?

F1 should always be about the technical side of racing and although I agree another Geoff Crammond game would be awesome I've still got high hopes for this. Come on Codies, do us proud :)

How about another Geoff Crammond F1 game instead?

Yes. I played the crap out of Grand Prix 2/3. Awesome sims.

I hope this turns out good, but I can't get passed it being GRID in an F1 skin. Still think you will be best served by rFactor and one of it's high quality F1 mods if a decent F1 racer is what your after.

awww was hoping for something a lil sooner but I guess they need some actual 2010 racing to have occurred to get some hard data
  • NGCes26294BIV #12 2 years ago

    Console Metacritic...

    Dirt: 83
    Dirt 2: 87
    GRID: 87

I have high hopes for this. Finally, a decent multi-format F1 game.

I was convinced sony had the F1 license and were using it in GTForever?
  • Kostabi #14 2 years ago

I was convinced sony had the F1 license and were using it in GTForever?

F1 cars will no doubt be in GT5. The license is a strange beast as while Codemasters have the rights to the championship and all the cars, drivers and tracks that entails, teams are still allowed to sell their individual rights to anyone they please. Which is why the Williams F1 car will be in iRacing and the BMW was in Live For Speed.

  • sfp_noodle #15 2 years ago

i hope those screenshots are genuine coz they look fucking amazing! have no fears about the quality of the game as codemasters are by far, the best developers out theere when it comes to racing games.
  • Stifler #16 2 years ago

    Elitist hat on:

Please don't dumb this down and have rewinding and all that associated cr@p (oh god, please no auto braking).

I know you can turn them off, so as long as they give me a proper sim I'll forgive the inevitable nub aid inculsions.

  • andijames #17 2 years ago

Looks rather good! Unfortunately the online mode will have to be avoided as either two things will happen. a) Everyone will banzai it into the first corner and cause an amlighty pile up followed by 10 people quitting out straight away or b) 3 point turns a plenty and drivers bombing round the track backwards.

If they can sort this rather hard issue out then i can imagine it would be tremendous fun online.
  • Beano #18 2 years ago

    60 fps or no sale.
  • effinjamie #19 2 years ago

With Codemasters in charge, I have serious doubts over this. I can just imagine the "YEAH! GO FOR THE WIN !" annoying Yank Twat voiceover, because the odds are on that it will be totally Americanised.
  • timknott #20 2 years ago

"odds are on that it will be totally Americanised"

Doubt it, F1 doesn't sell in the US, and codemasters will know their market well.

To be honest, their making all the right noises, I'm a graduate of F1GP2, 3 & 4, and hope to god they will allow 100% race distances.

I'd like to be excited and it looks rather good but will this inevitably just be a pretty easy-to-handle racer catering to the masses and only the masses...?

I don't have a problem if they do cater for people just wanting to have a shot at being Button, but there's a fair number of people who want a sim of F1, one with nice graphics and plenty of options. Somehow if it's based on the handling models of GRID or DIRT then it will be a pretty shallow experience for the true F1 and sim fan out there.... If it handles like a ramped up version of the F3000 cars in Race Pro then I will be happy, that's all I want.. not this wishy washy handling, over the top speed and ridiculous braking and grip capabilities. Please Codies don't squander the license trying to make a game for all sorts and ignore those wanting a real and realistic challenge in their F1 racing game! You'll earn a bit more respect if you can fulfil our dreams :)

(P.S. I don't see how a true sim game can't be fitted into a game maybe catering for a more mass-market appeal. Race Pro on Xbox is my benchmark for sim handling on consoles really, especially the open cockpit cars. It feels right and believable, AND challenging, but with a bit of practice and an understanding of the basic principles of driving a car fast round a track I think it's rather easy and accessible. Sadly too many people don't seem interested in this and just want games which pile blur effects on and you slam into things a lot and where finesse and control seem to be the last thing on their minds. F1 is the one motorsort above all where this mentality is quite at odds really. I don't think it's a massive challenge really to do both in one game :p)
  • Sniper_007 #22 2 years ago

@Beano Sorry mate you may as well look away now, up to now all of Codies Ego powered games have been 30fps.... and to expect a 60fps game looking as good as these pictures suggest while being able to throw around up to 24 cars on screen at once is asking just a little too much of these current consoles. I think the best we can hope for is locked 30fps with minimal screen tear?

It may be possible on the PC though?

"Doubt it, F1 doesn't sell in the US, and codemasters will know their market well. "

The exact same could be said of the Colin Mcrae and Toca games and look how they have turned out so that they now appeal to the US audience, I think your kidding yourself if you think they are going to make an F1 game that isn't targeted at their primary market, the US.

Well yes fair point, but both those games, they changed the actual game content as well as the presentation to make this work. With this game, its a series of races, with a fixed, known number of participants, a fixed format, and fixed locations (none of which are in the US) it would be much harder to aim this at the US market, and lets be honest, Colin Mcrae & Toca were in the grand scale of things pretty small markets(despite how much I enjoyed the early McRaes), and needed expanding to make games profitable, F1 is massive, and massive globally, its less nessessery. I remain hopeful.
  • Eraysor #28 2 years ago

I really hope this will be good. I'm glad they're taking their sweet time to make it.
  • Helios_CM #29 2 years ago

@ citizenHUNTER - The devs of the game had this to say earlier today on our forums about the handling and how it will compare to DiRT and GRID:

"Early on in development we identified all the key areas that we needed to make shine.

Number one on that list was the car physics system, which is being re-engineered from the ground up for F1 2010. Several key areas have been rewritten, enabling us to have a detailed simulation of how an F1 car feels on track."

This this this. Codies americanized dirt, BECAUSE genuine rallying doesn't hold much appeal in America. I would not be remotely surprised to see the same thing happen to an F1 game.

As for fps issue, I think 60 is critical for racing games, even more so for ones with a simulation slant. Bollocks to the eye candy, drop it a little as needed to get that 60 fps.
  • Beano #31 2 years ago

They dumbed down (and destroyed) both McRae and TOCA to fit a wider audience and sell to the maricans... hopefully they will not do the same with F1. I want a serious F1 simulation in 60 fps and not a gimmicky semi-arcade racer.
  • dfooster #32 2 years ago

it wont be americanized as they are using the voices from the bbc commentary team for pre race build up and post race analysis, and the game is being viewed from a driver perspective throughout which means there will be no tv style commentary during the race, but possibly team radio which i would think has a 99% chance of being a european voice. (so no american whooping and "your on the last lap..pedal to the metal nonsense"

the game engine has been tweaked enormously from the grid game, so whilst it may look as pretty as that game it should handle very differently indeed.

i have been following this game and it does look special, its just how much of the intricate rules of F1 they have to leave out in order to get it released that might upset F1 purists. but make no mistake this will probably be the best F1 game to have ever been released on consoles.
  • RobotRocker #33 2 years ago

    I bloody hope so.

Instant 9/10 if Codebastards work in "Felipe Baby, stay cool!" somewhere in the team radio voices.
  • Caimbeul #34 2 years ago

    Yay! its coming to PC!
  • Rodchenko #35 2 years ago

Looks good Codemasters. Now can you please let your cars pivot around the front axle rather then their center?
  • banjo21 #36 2 years ago

PS. Geoff had a GP4 for orig Xbox canned as far as I remember within 2 months of due date.

PS3 F1 game was pretty darn fine - but just didn't have that on the track feel that Forza/GT5P have. Just hope Codies overcome the hovercraft feel of Dirt and Grid.
  • darren1976 #37 2 years ago

Cannot wait for this, especially if the career mode is deep! Can't wait for the Grand Prix this weekend either! Please codies make this game great!

The most overrated motorsport in the world, made into a game by one of the most overrated devs in the world!
  • SniperZoz #39 2 years ago

fingers crossed on this one .. been waiting for an F1 game on the 360 forever!
  • covfan #40 2 years ago

GP4 for the Xbox was actually complete and I think there was a copy of it floating about a few years ago, would have loved to have seen what they did with it for the Xbox.

On that line, Geoff Crammond is a very secretive person and apparently has retired. He also amazingly didn't like the way people edited his games.
  • Mickeman #41 2 years ago

Ah, the yellow hue of the Ego engine. It is always easter in a Codemasters racer.
  • earobus #42 2 years ago

About time been waiting soooo long for this! Someone tell them the world is not in sepia though eh.

  • Frenchy0312 #44 2 years ago

Hope this hasnt been converted from a sim to arcade nonsense like the colin mcrae series. We should see some screenshots of formula one cars drifting round corners soon
  • Jonny5Alive7 #45 2 years ago

I was hoping it was going to come out a bit sooner than that, it seems like ages away! The 2010 season will be close to finishing by then, I hope its worth the wait.
  • chronom4n #46 2 years ago

GRID basically handled like a pendulum unless you persevered with the handling and/or used a wheel. I hope that the graphics engine is further polished up but I am hopeful that the handling will be excellent because codemasters can't afford to balls it up in that department.

Agreed. It's been a long time since I rated the F1 as the best motorsport going...
  • SomaticSense #48 2 years ago

    Please be a sim.

And I don't mean 'Forza or GT' sim, I mean a proper sim, with the option of long races, proper tyre wear, and accurate rules.

Anything else, there's no point. Remember Codies, casuals don't care about F1, but the diehards do. Don't make a stupid business decision by catering to a non-existant casual F1 audience and develop a game for the fans!
