Epic "can do what we want" with Gears

Rein out it owns IP, not Microsoft.

Mark Rein has said that Epic Games is free to do what it likes with Gears of War.

"We own Gears of War. We can do what we want with it," Rein, who is vice president of Epic, told VG247.

"We have a great relationship with Microsoft, and they helped turn the game into a huge success for us, and we are pretty happy with the way things are going."

Gears of War has only appeared on PC and Xbox 360 up to now. One assumes Epic's working on Gears of War 3. Bloody well better be - I must know what the deal is with Marcus's dad!

    Can't wait for Gear of War 3, though they already clarified that next Gears will be for next gen and not current console. Which means that even if we get any footage of it for now it will be not just beta but looking so much better from the current installments and will be just teasing us for at least the next 2 or so years till release. So I dont know. Guess better not see a thing from it till way later on. I dont doubt it will be awesome ofc.

    Oh...yes they can.
    I'd imagine Gears is an IP Microsoft would probably want to keep exclusive, at least up until the 3rd one has made its mark.

    Edit: Just reads the title? In order for me to remember this I had read very well the article in the first place. And the update of the article itself is the one stating what i just linked so who is that doesn't know what the article says? Me or you and the mod..?

    My english is not very good, but that sentence is pretty easy to understand. I guess...

    Dude are you feeling ok? Read AGAIN the sentence i linked you, its the last update stating that the damn gears 3 would be for NEXT consoles. What you are pasting are assumptions before the update and what i paste is updated from their own words in the same damn article. You dont need to be a scientist to understand that neither any better english.

    "Update: Epic Games president Michael Capps claims he misspoke during a Q&A session at the Tokyo Game Show today when he said, "If there were a next Gears of War, that will be for the next console generation, whenever that is."

    Speaking to Eurogamer after the event, Capps explained that if the next Gears of War - assuming there is one - were to be released in the next "four to five years", it would be for current consoles.

    Were it to be based on Unreal Engine 4, however, it would have to come out on the next round of consoles, because those are the machines for which Epic is targeting its next generation of money-spinning engine technology.

    "If we ship a game in the next few years, it'll be Unreal Engine 3. If we ship a game on next [generation] consoles, it will likely be Unreal Engine 4," he told Eurogamer. "

    Current consoles means nothing,generic statement used by everyone.Just like Gears 2 don't expect 3 on anything other than 360.

    I dont expect it either on anything other than MS platform ad the linked article does say thats going to be on the next round of consoles and not current even if they do, thats what it says...

    Hope they don't wait for the next gen to release Gears 3. The game is great, but not worth that sort of wait for a very average story. The graphics are good enough as is for this trilogy and the gameplay has always been good.

    lol @ the GoW3 this gen, next gen debate :)

    I am sure Gears of War 3 will be in current gen. Halo Reach this year. Gears of War 3 in 2011, will be announced E3 2011. Epic and MS can deny all they want. They simply dont want to take the attention away from Halo Reach.

    Gears 3 will not necessarily be the next gears - they could go down the ODST route, and spruce the current engine up for another release - IMO it would be a bit of a daft move for all concerned if they waited 4 or 5 years for the next game and let the fanbase drift away, rather than striking while the iron's hot.

    Either way, I hope they bring it back to the PC.

    Could they please give the next one a decent conclusion instead of a over glorified `to be continued` bit...its really really starting to irk me the amount of games which do not have a decent conclusion to them which enables further games to advance the story, instead of just having further games advancing the story...I want some payoff.

    Epic kicks off rumours of a multiplatform Gears or possible port of previous Gears games.

    Now I've only played a little of Gears myself, maybe half an hour, and it didn't really impress me. In fact I found it quite boring as I didn't have any storyline to go on. A possible port or multiplatform Gears game wouldn't really interest me either, as EvilBob said, Gears was a long time ago now, interest in the game is waning or even passed for a lot of people, especially those that don't own a 360.

    AFAIK, MS had a contract for the first 2 gears games at least. now tht theyre done, it cud be tht theyre making a public statement tht either confirms a possible future multi console release, or they simply want MS to offer tht little bit of money they know they can offer to keep it exclusive.

    after all, it seems a bit odd tht epic wud come out and make this statement. u dnt see sucker punch or insomniac saying stuff like this and theyre completely independent also yet only make games for the ps3

    Maybe they seen how square managed to double up there sales by puttin final fantasy 13 on the 360. You'd have to wonder, a big fat cheque from microsoft or release it cross platform... Which would make more money??

    There is nothing funnier than someone having a hissy fit because they got downrated. And every single time that happens, the poster goes on how about how they don't care anyway because everyone is a bunch of retards.

    As others have pointed out, the article was updated.

    The original statement didn't ring true to me anyway, given how much they've made from the games on 360 and how both HD console manufacturers seem intent on extending the lives of their current hardware for at least a few more years.

    Well one reason why they might not release a next Gears on PS3 is that it would make it clear that it not the 3rd party devs fault that Unreal engine games tend to look worse on the PS3, its an engine weakness.
