E3: Trico finally shown, renamed

Ueda's The Last Guardian.

Sony has finally unveiled the third game from Fumito Ueda's Sony Japan team, previously codenamed Trico. Now it's called The Last Guardian.

In a polished re-run of the leaked trailer from a while ago, we see an Ico-esque boy's first encounter with the winged cat/rat/bird thing that he seems to befriend, while that music from Miller's Crossing plays over the top.

Kiddo climbs on the creature's head and surveys a crumbling city as the sun sets over a mountain range, and then we see the other sights: cat/bird/wotsit meowing/crawing at him emotively, boy sneaking up on it while it appears to sleep in the shadows, and various shots of co-operation.

There are bridges giving way as the boy clings to the creature's tail, gloriously pretty underwater bits, lots of lush vegetation and dancing insects caught by the sunlight - and some grumpy swordsmen, who fall foul to physics-based deaths.

The footage goes into more depth than the leak overall, with a mixture of platform and puzzle-style scenes and more peaceful, er, sleeping scenes.

It's due out for PlayStation 3 exclusively, although we didn't catch a date from Sony America boss Jack Tretton.

  • lavalant #2 3 years ago

^^ same, but I doubt we will see it for a few years.

Tom, is this the game you were referring to a while back? You said you and Rauper had seen an amazing game that you couldn't quite announce. Was this it?
  • YoJimbo #4 3 years ago

Agreed, the ONLY game worth buying a PS3 for
  • Kiigan #5 3 years ago

Still no release date :( Surely it's been in development for years now...
  • wittynic #6 3 years ago

if by the time this comes out the PS3 has had a price cut, it will be a system seller for me.

This looked amazing. The sense of wonder all over again. Haven't had that in a while.

Nice to see idiocy hasn't left this site, but then these ignorant morons are the currency of this site. Without them EG is nothing.

Team Ico games are always good and I am really excited for this game. I have to admit though, that Sony's press conference overall has been pretty underwhelming. We already knew about almost everything, which is fine if they actually show some incredible new stuff from these games but a lot of it was already stuff we have heard or seen before.

  • dominalien #10 3 years ago

    @SaberEdge

Yes, most of the stuff they showed was already known, but the surprises were still there.

I don't really care about FFIVX for example, but that was quite unexpected. And the motion tracking tech they showed looked quite fun. Plus, knowing a new team ICO game was coming out and having seen the chain in floor was one thing, but I really wasn't prepared for THAT.

Also, R* exclusive game? RE on PSP? I'm pretty happy with what they showed, actually.

Oh. My. God! This is the single best looking, best moving, most emotionally involving video game I've ever set eyes on! Absolutely enthralling stuff! It even woke my girlfriend up after the previous two hours of utter corporate drek from Sony.

It looks like a cross between Ico and Shadow, but blows both out of the water in terms of looks, characterization, animation and scale. Awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome! Looks so good, you could lick it. I'm in awe! Irritatingly, no word on a release date yet, but it looks so ambitious, so grand, so exceptional that I'd be very surprised if we see it before 2011.

    It looks absolutely stunning!

This game looks phenomenal. I'm sure many of the core market will be turned off by the slower pace and cutesy-ness of the title (much like they were with Ico), but I for one am excited. Certainly the best animation I've ever seen.

So far I have had no impulse to invest in the Sony lies machine, but this looks too good to miss...

To each his own. Personally, I think Gears of War 2 is the ONLY exclusive game worth buying a 360 for, although I do own other 360 games.

Love the incorporation of... er... wind. Looks very atmospheric and watching the trailer makes me want to play Shadow of the Colossus again.

    Now I must buy a PS3... next year :)

It was nice, but it wasn't that great. We still know pretty much nothing about it and people are saying its the best thing ever? Calm down people.

In defence of "everyone", I doubt you will find that many people commenting positively on The Last Guardian who aren't fans of ICO & Shadow of the Colossus.

    I'm with many others above - I'll be purchasing a PS3 for this game! : )

God I loved (and continue to love) Ico and SotC. Played through Ico again a few weeks ago, to show a non-gamer friend. It remains utterly beautiful.

. . . . although having said that, I still wish they'd do an HD remake of both games!! I'd buy them again!
  • penhalion #23 3 years ago

I already have a PS3 and I can't say I was impressed with the team ICO video. Are we supposed to become emotionally attached to this strange creature and run around a vast map dodging guards and feeding it until it presumably evolves or gets killed at the end or something. I noticed the creature seemed to have arrows sticking out of it, which the kid made zero attempt to remove.

Definitely didn't evoke the emotion that Ico and Colossus did when I first saw those.
  • andywilkie35 #24 3 years ago

Hmmm, seems I won't be selling my PS3 after all!
