Conan 360 "still very much set to happen" News

MMO PC News by Robert Purchese

3 September, 2008

Funcom has told Eurogamer that an Xbox 360 version of Age of Conan will definitely be released.

"The Xbox 360 version is still very much set to happen and we are working on it," said Erling Ellingsen, chief horn-blower for Funcom.

"However, there are no dates set, even though we aim for a 2009 release. Our big priority now is, of course, the PC version and fixing the issues with it and improving it for our current players."

Work began on the console MMO in December 2006, but was put to one side during the run up to the PC launch in May this year.

The plan was to follow with an Xbox 360 version of Age of Conan roughly 12 months later.

However, observers speculated that the amount of work needed to keep the PC community playing, plus the perils of the Xbox Live platform (certification for patches - eek!) meant Funcom may not bother with a console version after all.

Contrary to this, Age of Conan was shown being controlled by an Xbox 360 pad during Games Convention last month. This is the work of Blue Orb and clever PC application SwitchBlade, though.

Funcom is currently testing an upcoming PvP rewards patch for Age of Conan, which will offer the best battlers impressive equipment sold from specialist NPCs.

Our Age of Conan gamepage has plenty more information.

With the game in it's current state, I highly doubt it will ever see a release on the 360.

I knew from the start that Age of Conan would never come to the 360. I still believe it never will.

A console game would never get released in the state that AoC was, nor even the state it's in now. For some reason, PC MMO developers get away with it. Microsoft-style QA is what the game needs, although it will take them years to fix all the issues.

Fucnom: finish the PC version before you start thinking about a console version.

Since we already pay a monthly fee for xboxlive, I don't think much people will accept to pay some extra cash for a MMORPG, unless it's an absolutely stellar, totally polished game. Which doesn't seem to be the case here.

Will this be a multi-disc game? Or will they be developing their own highly advanced compression technology that allows them to fit a game with an install size of 24gb onto a double layer DVD?

The PC version isn't even remotely finished yet, shocking how much of a state the end game, the pvp system and the economy was in on release.

I can't see Xboxers being too bothered by this game either, not worth a sub.

Hahahahahahahahaha
After no less than 8 or 9 (out of memory) crashes today alone on the PC I think not.
Also, the PC version currently occupies 25.4GB of HDD space, just how can we fit that onto a 360 HDD, ok, lets use low res textures and even more instancing. Not happening.

Oye 360 owners. DO NOT fall for this tripe.

Conan 360 "still very much set to happen".

Nothing Age of Conan is happening. It's dying. And it was stillborn.

I do wonder at the people who stay there after their initial free month. Would they even know a proper game and gameplay if it up and bit them on the arse?

Can EG cut the lifeline to Funcom now, please? And can they do a serious re-evaluation of the game that approaches thruthfulness?

To any MMORPG'er looking for a new realm to wander in this autumn: There are many, and better, choices: WoW with it's Lich King expansion (not my cup of tea, but well made as usual), Warhammer, while it may have bugs at the start, should not be fundamentally broken, and holds a lot of promise, and also Aion and The Agency should be worth looking into.

This was not the Hyboria you were looking for.

P.S. First edit for spelling, and second for the fact that I forgot that the brilliant MMORPG that I myself am playing; LotRO, gets it's very own expansion in form of "The Mines of Moria", and should be highly attractive as well. *slaps forehead*.

I have re-subbed to AoC this week, but using a pre-paid card wot I bought on the cheap.
Earlier this week I suffered only a couple of crashes a day...woohoo! Progress!

Today, after a wee update I managed around 8 crashes to the desktop. Bloody annoying and not something ANY 360 game can be allowed to do, therefore I say there will NEVER be a 360 version, unless there's a suited man at Funcom who can convince them the initial sales would far outweigh the backlash. There probably is such a man.

As a fan of RE Howard's Conan I hope AoC comes good, on the PC at least.

For a console a MMORPG needs to actually be twitch and equipment based (not level based), possibly like planetside or something. AoC just doesn't look like the game to do it.

I'd be surprised if this came to this 360, or if it does it'll be after the console has peaked kind of like the Final Fantasy MMOs did on consoles. This is the type of game a lot of people (me included) would buy a new PC for if it was worth it, but on this occassion it wasn't.

@Aspic

That's what I've been wondering. Apart from the large number of skills/spells/attacks you need to access quickly, how will the chat channel work?

The main reason I thought AoC was poo was the complete lack of any social element. There was never any chat and nobody grouped up. Might as well have been a solo game. WoW, on the other hand, is a space absolutely crammed with social interaction both in chat channels and grouped people all over the place.

----------------------------------------------

They tried to counter that by introducing quests later that forced grouping due to being so ridiculously difficult, but it didn't really work as everybody was so focused on just getting their "10 Kills to Win" that you'd wind-up being deserted by your "team" the moment they'd completed the required number of kills, as it was such a pain to kill the mobs in question and - by that point - those who were done wanted to leave.
